He lists three reasons why he picked up the language, one of it being the challenge itself.

That’s the majority of Asian people. When they hear someone even say ‘hi’ in their language, it’s as if you had a full on convo with them. They are truly wholesome and appreciative.
ESPECIALLY when they did the "oohoohh" and "aahhhh" after he said he was going to give them "3 reasons" on why he learned Mandarin lol.
This is the true nature of Chinese people. They love to hear us foreigners speak Mandarin. Even if it’s a little bit they make us feels as if we’re fluent 😂❤. Nelson Mandela once said “if you want to win over a man’s heart, speak their language.”
Normally foreign celebrities only learn Nihao (hello in Chinese) just to cheer up their Chinese fans. Mark speaks chinese (although the speed is just like a 4 years old) for minutes, and conveys correctly what he wants to, is truly unbelievable. I solute to his effort

He speaks Mandarin in the same way he speaks English, with the pauses, the intonation, the insertion of 'umms', etc. I find it amazing that the audience still understood what he said.
chinese often speak english in the same way they would mandarin also. they are both very different in how their sentences are structured and how they communicate. my chinese teacher has known english for like 30 years but still doesnt speak it in the same way a native speaker would, its not really possible
@@Archman155Very good point, no one ever makes the reverse point but it's completely true. Chinese or French or whatever pronounce English like their own languages but I honestly easily understand it still.
@@Archman155 I don't think is impossible, it's just that people tend to stop the will to improve once they reach certain level, and feel comfortable that way. You can totally improve with practice and focused study on pronounce/accents, but again it's a active learning and if you're not willing to go through that, you won't
@@Archman155 I agree but ya know what some intellectual linguistic fanatics find way to master the native accent, it's possible but requires learning and adopting the entire system from square one and with a blank mind, like a toddler seeing the world for the first time and mimicking his parents. IT'S VERY MUCH POSSIBLE.
Weird how Mark speaking Mandarin humanizes him so much
Maybe his English linguistic sub routine files were corrupted during their installation, and this new installation has inadvertently fixed the bug causing the uncanny valley effect

I can teach you Chinese, my native language is Chinese. The main problem is: I don't understand English, I only speak Chinese (now using a translator)
I've been taking Mandarin lessons in school for over a year! Ngl it is not easy, but worths it. My Chinese is not well because I don't have the opportunity to focus on studying as much as I'd like to (other uni classes ugh) and Chinese wants dedication and consistency. Sometimes it gets frustrating but when I understand sth in chinese I get super proud and that feeling is everything to me! Soo do your best, yes Chinese is difficult but I think not to the point we think of it is, it always felt like impossible to me before I started studying it but it turns out you can learn Chinese if you try hard enough and be patient hahah

Seriously, Mark Zuckerberg went up several notches in my book with this, because as an English-speaking learner of Japanese (which is far easier than Chinese to learn), the fluency Mark displays here -- in being able to not only speak Chinese but to understand it being spoken as well -- is truly commendable.
They just downloaded mandarin to his speech database
I mean, it's not exactly hard to hire the best language teachers on the planet when you're worth billions. John Cena is also another example.

@@aidanschram9652 I think he means in terms of pronunciation, but when it comes to writing, japanese is probably harder

@Gordon Martin You didn't learn English in 3 years either. Don't be so hard on yourself.
@@uditkarode Chinese is so much harder because it is different.
Learning Spanish when you know Portuguese is a lot easier because they are similar. But we only realise how similar French, Portuguese and English are when you start to learn a language which is not.
So learning English when you know another western European language is easy compared to Chinese because the grammar structures are similar.
But for a Chinese English is as different from Chinese as Chinese is from English for an Englishmen.
@@JoostMehrtens bruh even Most people of south asian and south east asian country know Some english if not all
Imagine if Mark started say something like "zhao shang hao zhongguo xianzai wo you bing chilling"
Kudos to the man on his ear.
He's a little self-conscious, but this is the most relaxed and casual I've ever seen him.
He's still a dork.
@@juanmanu9652 but why?
@@juanmanu9652 how
haha when you're still a beginner in something, you are bound to be self-conscious
That's because he snored his daily doze of "FB users Data" before the interview.
Man: “So how did you pick up Mandarin?”
Mark: “Very interesting”
The crowd: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I think people thought he didn't understand the question because of the slightly unusual response of "very interesting". So they laughed as to say "haha ok he doesn't REALLY know mandarin". But then when Mark correctly answered the question, giving a long and conceptually coherent response, people where very impressed. English-speaking people are very used to seeing foreigners speaking English, so you take it for granted. But for chinese people this is an incredible experience.
They are laughing at you, not with you! :P
Your cute
they're laughing because they know it was programmed
After that speak he earned social credits for the rest of his life
Ah, I just knew it! Can’t believe it! 🤩
"So mark tell us why you picked up mandarin"
Its simple, I want people of China make a Facebook account
Pong Except that Facebook is banned by the Chinese government, dipshit.

Or you're just a taiwanese spy lol
Same. He said pretty much everything correctly but the accent was a little bit hard to understand Lmao.
@@aliceyue1754 so he speaks the words correctly, but with the wrong tone? I didn't get it...
@@ivomoreira42 It's just that in Chinese, there are four tones to each word and changing the tone of a particular word can change the entire meaning.
He has an obvious accent. This makes me so relieved
His systems started heating up processing the extra translations that’s why he needed that sip of water 😂
*speaks fluent mandarin*
*doesn't know what zucc means*
Marshilfe get zucced
Marshilfe. Dead fucking ass
That's nowhere near fluent.
DEDASS TRU
That's actually extremely normal, non-native speakers even who has no problem communicating with natives, need a lot of effort adapting to other non-native speakers with a different accent. BTW I understood 80% of what he said without the subtitle.
that's honestly the most impressive thing he's ever done , he felt like an actual human here , so wholesome
He feels more human when he's speaking Mandarin than when he's speaking English. It's like English is foreign to him.
you forgot he invented facebook?
@@diggaahnma1333 No, I haven’t. I’m referring to the fact that he seems like soulless automaton when he speaks English. He seems far more livelier in Chinese. It’s almost as if there’s a bias there.
