That little extra “good night” he gives to the warden is perfect. That’s a man from a small town. That’s Superman.
They say “good night “ more often in small towns⁉️ 🤷♂️
@@trainfire2008 Yep.
Christopher Reeve is arguably once again and will always be the best Superman ever.
Brandon Kohout 3:04
Amen!
R.I.P.
@Jay GanLuthor- I am Lex Luthor, the greatest criminal mind of our time I hereby notify that these walls will not be able to stop me.
He is saying I am a criminal and I am going to escape, what I have as an Olympic champion is clever.
@Jay Gan Bullcrap. Val Kilmer played Batman in a big-budget movie, and NO ONE says he's Batman, let alone the best one ever.
Correct
I tell you man. I don't think we will ever get a Superman like this ever again. Chis smile at the end puts a smile on my face.
Unforgettable 😊
Gene Hackman's comical twist to Lex Luther was genius.
@jexrutin Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luther was basically the fucking Riddler in the DCEU.
Gene Hackman is so under rated. Some of my favourite parts ever
Yet you can still take him seriously,at least I did
@Mr. Deez I know how old he is and I get your point. Still too underrated. Ill check it out. I'm thinking BAT*21
@Mr. Deez Behind Enemy Lines
"No Sir, don't thank me, warden. We're all part of the same team!"
I don't think I can emphasize how great it is that this is the final line of the film. This is the thought that the audience is left with as they leave the theater to go home. Superman's great, but we can all be just as great as him. We can be a great people; we wish to be. We only lack the light to show the way.
I agree. Also, a little different but just as great the exchange at the end of Batman begins:
Gordon: I never said thank you.
Batman: And you'll never have to.
We, um, we had drastically different takeaways from what I said originally.
exactly,it sums up who he is perfectly
@ Talia ... numbskull.
Totally agree with you! This film and Reeve's interpretation of the character was spot on. Superman is our modern day re-telling of every religious parable from every religion: the "son/prophet/re-incarnation of god" being sent to earth to unite humanity and make sure what happened to Krypton doesn't happen to the human race. I think Richard Donner and Chris Reeve were the closest in getting to that core point of the character. In my opinion, what most non-Superman fans don't understand about this character is that despite his virtual omnipotence, his greatest fight is in his struggles to stop people being nasty to each other. I may be alone in saying this but I didn't quite like Gene Hackman's "comedic" interpretation of Lex Luthor, arguably the greatest comic book villain of all time (better than the Joker or Magneto). Lex is an academically brilliant, disgustingly wealthy and politically influential man who believes that not all human life is worth the same and falsely believes himself to be saviour of mankind, whose hatred of Superman is on the same lines as xenophobia and racism. He doesn't understand Superman's altruism and benevolence. He sees Superman as the refugee (albeit a physically powerful one) from a failed world who has come to earth to tell people what to do and how to behave towards each other.
"Superman cares about *everybody*, Jimmy."
That's what his critics keep forgetting.
That's what 21st Century filmmakers keep forgetting, Hack's Snyder & Singer for example.
@@ValiantWrestling Agree, in Man Of Steel and BVS, they always only play up Superman saving of Lois Lane, as if Superman is a hero to her, not everyone. They made Superman look like a romantic movie hero.
Valiant Wrestling Federation, Snyder yes, definitely with BvS, but Singer? There’s literally a scene in Superman Returns where Superman chooses to go save Metropolis over Lois at one point in the film, leading to him stopping an explosion and the globe on the Daily Planet from falling on Perry White.
That's what Bryan Singer and Zack Zyder forgot when making their Superman movies.
Oh man you guys would hate some of the ways the newer comics portray Superman. Some even turn him evil?? Steer clear of those.
Aren’t these movies supposed to instill hope and inspiration into the every day man? All of you preaching that theme seem to also simultaneously attack newer mediums that don’t copy paste this exact movie formula. All Superman movies are great retellings, and each one differs from each other in subtle ways to stand out. Reeve would’ve loved each movie that came after him; or at least, this Clark would’ve. If you don’t like it- appreciate the oldies. There is no point in berading Snyder and Singer. And for what it’s worth, I think Superman Returns almost beats Superman the Movie.
There can never be another Christopher Reeve. He epitomized Superman, look at the smile and of course the hope he instills on all of us. Guess, God also needed him. Miss you so much Mr Reeve.
Plus he brought humanity to the role too
@Vijay Krishnan The director of "Superman Returns" was planning on having Christopher Reeve in one scene as a regular human going down the sidewalk in his wheelchair saying something like "I hope Superman can save us from Lex Luthor." Unfortunately, Christopher Reeve died before they could have him filmed in a scene.
@@afriendofbean That would've been so amazing.
@@bibianaguadalupeislasherre9880 I agree. I would have loved that. However, it's unknown whether they finished filming that scene with Christopher Reeve in his wheelchair and deleted it out of the movie because he passed away or they never got to do it because of him passing away. I would guess if they finished filming it but deleted it because, I learned that Heath Ledger who played as the Joker on "The Dark Knight" passed away in real life and a lot of people said that he died on "The Dark Knight" but, they deleted that out of the movie because of feeling how sad it was that he passed away in real life.
@Lawrence Rodriguez And Margot Kidder too.
Amazing actress, she's the real Lois Lane for me.
This movie will always be timeless.
The cringe......
My fave all time movie and a true classic

Damn straight
emp0rizzle yes he will.
Superman will always be C.R
Better than henry cavill crap..
Cgi was not bad for that time. Im impressed
I remember watching this as a kid and always loving when he smiled at the end in each movie. I always had such a connection to Christopher Reeve's Superman.
3:37 me too.
The comedic genius of Ned Beatty (Otis) is often overlooked. He is one of the cast still with us!!
Ned died in 2021, sadly.

They will always be Superman and Lois Lane in our hearts.
That smile at the end is iconic.
3:39 my favorite moment.
I love that line "No Sir don't thank me warden, we are all part of the same team"
so humble
The humility encompassed in that line captures the greatest power of Superman. It's a shame that most modern adaptations of the character, either animated or live, focus more on the super than the man.
thank you
Then a friendly "Goodnight." to the warden and all of us. Everything the new movies needed.
@@KainMaxi Amen! VERY eloquently well-spoken! I couldn't have said it better myself! 👍
This ending gives me chills every single time I watch it. Christopher Reeve's note perfect performance and John Williams majestic score are simply amazing. Every single superhero movie owes a debt of gratitude to this movie and it's director, Richard Donner.
He really did in my eyes make everyone believe that a man could fly Christopher Reeve will always be the superman
Jesse Ree 3:34
He also brought humanity to Kal El
Yep ., a little Boy named (CHARLES GREEN) believed it so much, he jumped out a Window from the 7th FLOOR of his GRAND MOTHER's apartment building back in the year (1979).
May he R.I.P....... ☹
Christopher Reeve will always be Superman in our hearts.
I Love The Way He Smiles,as He's Flying over The Earth
@@robertthomas5736 his new home. He has vowed to protect.
I loved Terence Stamp's performance as Zod. He was PERFECT for that role. A movie like this wouldn't be as memorable without a GREAT villain to counter the protagonist and Mr. Stamp really delivered.
2:16 "Your mother sends her love" = "Your missiles failed to reach their destination, Lex". A nice little dig.
The theme is iconic, it’s simply superman. Such a damn shame it was never used for the new movies, it really is uplifting when watching these movies.
Actually... it was used when Superman showed up in the end of Justice League.
Yeah during Super-mans resurrection when him and flash are fighting during super speed you can faintly hear the super-man theme. It gave me chills.
And didn't they also use it in Superman Returns?
Josstice League, lol
In the theatrical cut of Justice League it was almost like they were embarrassed to be using the theme because it was played so low in the sound mix that you barely noticed. Same thing with the Batman 89 theme.
Remember people this was 1978! The effects of Superman flying looks so cool!
Margot Kidder Had A Bit of A Problem Flying
I love the not so badly designed world globe 🤗
I think it's better than the flight scenes in the current movies
@@robertthomas5736 Not what I heard. I heard she was flying through the fluffy clouds with the best of them. She smoked a shit ton.
For some reason I don't know why, there is this bit that lasted no more than 1 second. After Lex starts talking to Superman with the ultrasound and Superman is looking for his lair, he flies past this window and a group of women see him flyby. That visual effect always stuck in my mind like, "Wow, he really just flew past that window."
2:14 Look at Chris Reeve here. He looks like a damn painting. Amazing.
And he epitomizes why comic book movies should have their characters look and dress like in the comics. All the "but what about the bright colors and trunks over the tights?" objections melt away when the actor and director take the role seriously and play it straight with no "I'm too cool for this material, I'm not a comic book nerd" undermining the source material
1977
That panoramic scene of him flying in orbit and the sun coming up over the horizon was and still is one of the greatest movie endings of all time.
I'm so glad we get to see that in all four of his films versions.
I've always found something so beautiful about the end of the Superman movies....as the sun rises, Superman flying above the planet he has sworn to protect.
"By the way, Miss Teschmacher -- you're mother sends her love..." PURE GOLD. Never saw that scene before. I can see why it was nixed, cutting abruptly to the prison was a more powerful transition, but darn that stings.
Good thing too. It'd seem awkward seeing her spring Lex from prison in the next film after what happened here.
3:08 When I first saw this, I remember getting some intense goosebumps when that glorious motif kicked in. It was a good film and John Williams elevated it to instant classic.
It got 4-stars.
3:10-3:17 me too.
He truly is the best Suprrman
Yes
1977
I always get chills when he says _No sir. Don't thank me, warden, we're all part of the same team. G'dnight_
The sound track, and the greatest ever superman, no contest hands down.
At 3:39 that fly-by "Smile that can never be replaced" thank-you Superman !!
3:06 That right there is an actor who lived the part as close as he could. I mean, look at him. He is actually on wires attached to a crane going up 3 stories at least. How many actors of today would do this? A true hero if there ever was one to bring to life magic for us kids.
Rest in peace Chris you where the greatest superman ,and a big part my childhood in the 80s, those last lines in movie say it all.😎👍👍🍻
40 year old movie, never seen half these scenes, unbelievable.
Bill Shines, 40 years old, and still better than any Superman movie that followed, though Superman II was very good, the rest, well, don't bother !!
I still believe the fourth installment had some unrealised potential. But it was a bad mix of things.
Movie was done by Cannon Group, who were notorious for making action movies on a semi-low budget. Doing a Superman movie, that is bound to contain many special effects shots, needs a shit load of money to look good.
Chris Reeve was one of the writers behind the movie. Even though he had respect for the character, he made Superman a bit too powerful. I mean... Rebuilding the Great Wall of China by just staring at it? Man, if he actually could, he'd make a lot of construction workers unemployed.
The pacing was off and the whole notion of Superman meddling in American (and world) politics should be a no-no for Superman.
If Superman IV was to be remade today on a proper budget and a few things were to be revised (like Nuclear Nails guy being more of a threat - the shadow is his weakness?! 🤨 Stupid ass weakness), I'd claim it could turn into quite a decent movie.
@@pHD77 Superman meddling with politics is an absolute must.
Bill Shinas the highlight of watching the first three Superman movies on ABC back in the 80s was all extra scenes not seen elsewhere.
Gene Hackman is an amazing Luthor in these movies. And... the way he plays the piano is fabulous. 😃
Way better than Robert Vaughn Ross Webster character in Superman III
Yeah i really think Gene nailed Lex Luther as the true supervillain he was. His evil scheme was great too
There would be no comic book film genre without the success of Superman (1978) or Batman (1989). Both films are now classics of the genre and will always be timeless.
Joseph 3:10 that’s what I liked about the classic genres of superheroes 🦸🏻♂️ and reboots at the same time.

Joseph The Dark Knight is the closest we have to Batman 1989.
Superman II (1980) & Batman Returns (1992), the only best sequels to their respective ancestors DC movies
Superman III and Batman forever are okay movie
That smile just melts the heart.
My thoughts exactly - he was just a perfect fit for Superman. RIP Christopher and Margot :(

Akhil Datta Superman
Does put a smile on your face?
Sure, I do.
Greatest lex luthor ever.
The lift off and flying away from the prison scene puts CGI to shame....Phenomenal!
Superman soundtrack still gives me the chills. Truly an original awesome movie!
3:10 me too.
Christopher Reeve will always be the one and only Superman. Rest in peace.
I love the wire work here. The way he turns in mid air to take off-amazing
That smile to the camera, breaking the fourth wall. Love it 😀👍🏻
The ease of the movements while they were all on wires is just astounding. Not even CGI can replace good old fashioned wire work to capture what it would *really* look like to see a man fly. This scene and others with Reeve (and not CGI) doing the work is more visually convincing than any other flying scenes in any current movies, imo. They should go back to using wires for contained scenes like this.
Brought a tear to my eye when that theme started at the end, Best superman, best superman theme, best lex Luthor.
The greatest superhero movie of all time, with due respect to the other superhero movies.
And Deadpool thinks he's cool with the "break the forth wall" stuff, i did that crap in the 70's.
Superman hahaha
Superman is to polite to stoop to deadpools level.

@@colonialradio1 Were talking about superhero characters here.
Superman LMAOOO
Just knowing I was about to watch that movie as a kid gave me goosebumps. Sort of like when the HBO intro came on back in the 80's. We'd tailor our whole night to fit around when a movie was supposed to come on. Definitely a simpler time in my life.
It makes me cry some times , for joy, that's my childhood, Chris was the greatest Superman, especially when says those classic lines, like we are all on the same team,😎👍
I love how Superman always said “Goodnight!”
*Lois:* It’s a shame Clark is never around when supe- “hold up, wait a minute, something ain’t right!”
Ned Beatty’s eyebrow raise when Hackman removes the wig kills me every time! 😂
Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder will always be Superman and Lois Lane in our hearts.
2:44 at first when I first watched this whole movie, I really believed that Lex did had hair. Now seeing this...well...I just cracked up just seeing him take off his wig in a very funny way.
We need superman now than ever
Some of the practical flying effects in the old Superman movies look far better than the Cgi blur in the modern films which are just boring, Christopher Reeve looks amazing at the end, what a piece of casting that was!
Best musical score ever written. Pure genius.
God I love that iconic theme music this takes me back to my childhood... Superman is by far the greatest superhero of all time I just can't believe the idiots at WB aren't making a Man of Steel sequel a major priority SMFH
Dave Scire they need to bring back the original music
You should thank John Williams then a fantasy cant make music silly
1977
"No Sir, don't thank me, warden. We're all part of the same team!" Thats why he's Superman
Some great wire work as he exits the yard, bring back practical effects, much more convincing than CGI
He is a superb guy who has played the role very well. He is loved and will get beloved always from every corner of the world....Wonderful Son....
Superman theme kicks in, he(superman) takes of from the prison slowly at the same time talking to the prison warden.... just epic
El único y verdadero Superman de todos los tiempos, QEPD Christopher Reeve.

Gene Hackman was brilliant as Lex Luthor. Class act!
Best Version of Superman Hands down How good that I bought it on Amazon video
Always great to see Christopher Reeve as Superman.
We didn't deserve Christopher Reeve he was a treasure...right now he is a real Superman up and above 🙏
2:19 Otis has his hands extended out, ready to be handcuffed.

2:17 lex’s face is just “welp, I’m done.”

One of the best all time endings of any movie ever! Christopher Reeve was the best Superman!
Gene Hackman is the best 🤣
RIP Richard Donner
It's a fundamental decency, humility and honesty that makes Christopher Reeve THE Superman
That wire work is unsurpassed to this day. It looks so amazing.
Margot Kidder was so beautiful !
I like the music right before the Superman theme kicks in. It sounds so intimidating and epic.
I like the special effects of the era because they had no CGI the studio made every effort to make it look as real as possible
Reeve and Kidder had great chemistry. Part of what made the Reeve Superman films good
Retro films and music can't beat it .
3:13 happy ending
What a beautiful man! RIP Mr. Reeves. Our forever Superman! ❤
The flying in this film is just unbelievably believable!!!
Of course, if this scene stayed in, you would wonder why she would help rescue their asses from jail in the second one?
maybe she needed the money
1977
This scene was really weird especially him playing the piano and about to feed Ms. Teschmacher to what sounds like several big cats right before Superman comes flying in and saves her and then takes Lex and Otis straight to a prison that oddly enough looks just like Alcatraz even though the prison was closed down by the time this movie was made.
The reason Christopher Reeve will never be matched as the representation of Superman was not because he was great in the cape but great in the glasses. He added a level of humility to the role which really made the character and the movie so great.
This is who Superman _really_ is… I wish the current DC movies and videogames weren’t so obsessed with turning him into a psychotic antagonist.
Close to the perfect superhero movie. Awesome score, excellent special effects (with some exceptions), and every role cast perfectly. Has its flaws: too long by 30-40 minutes, some of the earthquake scenes look cheap, and we wait almost 45 minutes to see Superman. Still, every superhero movie since 1978 owes a debt to this masterpiece.
Think I read somewhere that Derek Meddings left to make Moonraker, so some of the iffy effects like the dam were done by a different crew, hence crap looking. Also pity the front projection didn't use larger format film in order to reduce the grain and obtain a sharper image..
Those pre-superman scenes sowed the seeds for his rebellion against Jor-El in the climax, choosing to side with his earthly father, Kent. Without those scenes, his climactic decision wouldn't have much weight.
RIP Margot x
Superman The Movie, I love the 3 hour version better then the first two versions.
While I liked Supes saving Miss Tessmacher from Luthor's babies, in made sense why it was cut. After attempting to kill her, there's no way she would've helped Lex escape; in Superman II. For those wondering what Luthor's babies were, a leaked original script said, they were a combined tank full of gators, electric eels and sewer rats. But, they couldn't do the special effects for them. So, the "below pit" was left to audience imagination.
@@Commander_Shepard. basically harley quinn
Mercy Graves (Lex's assistant in other shows and films) was known for putting up with being used and abused in a similar matter, yet remaining loyal.
Lex's babies were obviously lions. Could you no* hear roaring?

I remember, years ago, telling people about this scene (saving Miss Teschmacher) and being told that it never happened. It's nice to finally see it again, after so many years, and realize that I'm not nuts, after all...LOL
The “awe shucks” way Reeves portrays Superman after the warden thanks him is so subtle but it’s so significant in that it shows that Superman really is that big blue Boy Scout from Kansas.
Christopher Reeve the best Superman there will ever be!
Kal El owed Miss Tessmacher one. She saved him from drowning when he had the kryptonite chain around his neck and he saver her from being eaten by Jackals
