They are not life jackets they are bouyancy aids. A life jacket is much larger and is designed to support somebody without them having to swim, if they become unconscious this is a particular advantage. A bouyancy aid will not support you without you swimming, whence the word ‘aid’, it helps you to stay afloat by swimming.
@@grahamm6299 Not that it really matters but I don't really agree with you there, Graham. A boyancy aid is intended to assist your floating when you're swimming or treading water. A lifejacket supports you even if you're unconscious, as you mention, and they're both wearing inflatable life jackets which do that. You can't really swim in them which means they're life jackets.
Brilliant episode, so exciting. Ride the tide out and use less fuel. Happy days. :)

Wes the life jackets you have have a Jock strap on them , WEAR IT because if you fall in the jacket will ride up and will be useless.

Normally you continue in the direction you are going until you can look into the leg of the Y to check if traffic is coming out, then you can turn safely into the Y. This avoids collisions because you can see where you are going.

Brilliant, loved every minute! Can't wait to see you go through the centre of London with the Clippers dashing back and forth! We loved our trip to St Kats (even if we had an expensive engine failure when we got there!), it's a wonderful experience.

For me its home been on the tideway from the age of 14 coxing sculling rowing and powered boats stay safe enjoy ❤
if that scares you a bit with the wake try 32 foot swells on a 800 ton ship

When you’re going through wake try not to let it hit you broadside, turn a little so your bow goes over them instead of the side on. Well done , you did amazing, I just remember how freaked out you were the first year and now you’re just old hat at it. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥰🙋🏼♀️

Brilliant video guys! Made us chuckle with your experience with large wakes! As we battle waves on the Lough Erne. Top tip turn into the wake before it hits you at a bit of an angle ro reduce the impact from the broadside. Great to see you wearing life jackets as well!

Hi Amy Wes, Well done on your first Tidal stretch of the Thames. I wondered if you would enter the tidal stretch as the tide was about to Ebb, as that would have helped your speed, rather than having to push against a Flood tide. Wes did a magnificent job turning into the Grand Union using the flow of the River to help turn him. Great to see Rufus and Doops. An excellent video. Thank you. Spoolbox.
With my little 14 footer day boat I quickly learned, after barely moving for ten minutes with the throttle at maximum, to not attempt to fight against the tide. If I ever did get into that situation, my response was to moor up inside a dock entrance or some kind of sheltered area of dead water and kill the engine and simply wait it out in the cabin .... Eat my lunch, put my feet up and chill out.

I used to top up thst tank every day, but it was running straight out the overflow. Dont do it, find out rhe xorrect level by leaving it for a day or ao Use a universal ready mix coolant .
Certainly wouldn't advise swimming in the Thames. I went to school at Teddington and school basically backed onto the river. School pal was swimming and got pulled under and died by some debris coming down the river.

To turn in to a lock you bow needs to be poibting in to the fliw of the river if waves are going to push you, try facing the wave.

The trip boat was really shifting, is there not a speed limit on the river?
Certain sections have faster limits so they can really open up the taps! 😳
That was quite rude of that trip boat, passing on the left and then immediately cutting you off to reach a dock on the right.
Looking back I think you’re right 🤔 we were so focused on the waves we didn’t even notice haha!

Yeah haha! It was a trip boat so it was pulling over to drop the passengers off!

You need to use the crotch strap on your life jackets they are useless without them and if you think that those were big waves then don't go sailing off the South &West Coast of Ireland where the waves can be 3 to 5 metres or more and strong winds

For around an hour either side of high tide or low tide there’s a thing called slack water
Interestingly we found out that at Teddington it’s so far away from the sea it basically doesn’t have any slack water! ☺️
