  • This is a revised version of episode 51. All of the postage stamp content is the same as before; the music has been eliminated, because of a copyright claim.
Have you ever thought about buying a hingeless stamp album for your postage stamp collection, and wondered if it was worth the cost? I bought my first one, recently, and in this episode of Ted Talks Stamps, I review it, and discuss its bad points and good points, so you can determine if you should lay out the money for one.

Have been a Lighthouse man since my very 1st stockbook which was all of $ 10 in 1971. I have US , Israel and UK complete pages and binders in hingeless albums from Lighthouse . While most modern pages cost more than the stamps themselves ….. they are a true pleasure tho tracking down the many many varieties of US took quite a while indeed . Thank god for Bardo Stamps as he has most everyone the US has issued and a great guy to deal with . Enjoy 😉

Wow! That was an eye-opener. I wish I'd seen this before I bought my DAVO French Album (Up 1949). I've begun to discover all the missing varieties. I've had it for awhile so I can return it but eventually I'll have to upgrade. The hingeless part is what grabbed me but I've also noted that not all of them were mounted very well and some of the mounts are fragile- if you open them too far, they tear- in some cases, the mounts are cut so small the stamp extends about the top and there's a part on the bottom that won't separate- they probably had a defective lot because it's only in part of the album. Anyway, it's been a learning experience.

As I have shared ……always been a Lighthouse man since a young lad in 1971 when I got my first stockbook . Hard to understand that Stanley Gibbons who seems to have stopped issuing album supplements is selling and pushing of all things DAVO albums for their UK customers . Hard to fathom King Charles pulling out the family collection to find only DAVO pages in which to place the very 1st stamps with his likeness ! It’s akin to putting earrings on a pig 🐷!

Hello Ted, thank you for this review. I like many other viewers had thought that Davo albums were a high end luxury stamp album which would have been something to purchase when I had the means to afford them but not now. It's disappointing to see that they missed major varieties. One other thing about hingless albums is that they don't account for odd stamps with extra selvage or blocks etc. Were I would cut a custom mount for the item. I guess I'll stick with my old Scott and Minkus binders.

Good video with some legitimate complaints and limitations of the album. I have used Kabe albums and buy blank pages. It is a lot of work printing them, cutting mounts and laying the stamps out, but i feel the end result is worth it. I am a collector of early Australian colonies and was able to include all the papers for the 1850 Sydney view issues including watermarked paper and the ribbed paper not listed by Stanley Gibbons but mentioned in Billigs. Have also been able to display stamps including a Lake Lefroy local stamp this way.
Only advice I could give someone wanting to buy a stamp album is be prepared to spend money for a good quality product.

Yes, own the Belgian albums. Some series are first grouped by theme, then they change method and do it chronologically, and then later they decide to do it by theme again.
And sometimes they include space for a second type of paper, but they forgot there were stamps with yet another type of paper. And then later with other series they totally forgot there were different kinds of papers. There are even some stamps completely missing like COB 810A which should be at the end of Davo I is not there, they put in a thematic album where it doesn't belong. There was apparently no quality control. And mistakes that were made are never corrected. Such a shame.

I have purchasing LH albums for over 50 years and I find as a collector to have a small but major country dropped without warning to be horrific . I actually had anticipated that the mini sheets were being eliminated so stocked up on their LB sheets which are basically high quality album off white pages with many varying sizes to accommodate stamps , ss, and the mini sheets themselves . These all fit seamlessly in the albums, and allow for a little flair in custom layouts tho not as beautiful as the official supplement layouts

The thing that really gets me is that they continue to sell the gold embossed red binders on the web site . There was a mention on the 2021 supplement pre orders that the mini sheets were being eliminated after 2021…. But NO mention of the country itself . I wrote the US office in NJ about this when I saw the entire country missing from the 2022 European catalog and they said it was far too popular to ever be dropped .

Contemplating getting the Netherlands album of theirs. They’re way cheaper and easier to get than the Lighthouse ones (which I’d prefer) where I live (The Netherlands). I really like the look of SAFE albums though, but so far haven’t found a Dutch or even German site who sells them strangely enough. Only a US one, even if it’s a German brand. (But their German website doesn’t sell the same albums as the US website does.) Perhaps I should just visit a physical German stamp store or something.

So an update. I did finally find that I should actually be able to order from the German SAFE album site, but I only got one option for payment, which I can't use. I did find a Dutch site which sells Lindler Albums though. They're similar in prize and quality compared to the Safe albums, and like with the Safe albums you can look at the back of the stamp. I'll probably be getting the Bavaria and German Empire pages plus two albums and album folders for about 365 euros.

Bought Davo (>20 albums) and now I regret it. Missing spaces, missing paper types, and why the hell can't you just leave an album open. It closes by itself all the time.
Such a cheap design. Davo should rethink their albums, get rid of the existing ones and start produce albums with hinges that stay open.
Preferably with hinges at the exact same location where the holes in the papers are now.
