(TC) P219A? Fuel Injector Replace 2010-2017 GM Truck with Flex Fuel 4.8L 5.3L V-8

  • Today on this episode of DIY WILLY, We are going to replace all 8 fuel injectors on our 2011 Chevy Silverado with the 5.3 Flex fuel LS v-8 engine. The check engine light came on and displayed a P219A code showing fuel imbalance on bank 1. I first changed the upstream O2 sensor on bank one and the EVAP Purge valve on the plenum but neither one had any effect on clearing the trouble code. After further diagnoses we found the problem to be a fuel injector. Since all 8 of the injectors had the same hours on them I thought it best to change all 8. This repair is time consuming and you should use quality parts that may cost more but will pay off in the long run.
    Difficulty Level:
    I rate this about a 6 on the difficulty level of 1 to 10 with 10 being the hardest.
    So follow along as we repair or upgrade our 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 Flex Fuel.

    I just did some research and found out cylinders 1,7,4, and 6 are the deactivation cylinders. Probably cylinder 7 fuel injector died out over time because of power being cut to these affected cylinders so much all the time. I need to get a afm disable device and or a tune.

      When I took the truck into the service dept for a 2nd opinion they said the proteas #6. That falls with in what you found. Could be a problem with deactivation system. That could be causing premature wear on those injectors.

      No.. you can also disconnect the battery before removing it if your not sure. If you would change/replace the throttle body then yes the new one could have different parameters and might require the computer to relearn has you said. But to just remove it clean it and reinstall should be no problem. Just DO NOT try to start it with out the throttle body or any other sensor disconnected. Definitely not recommended. interesting, came across this video trying to research this code. recently been through a cold snap last week and my truck threw this code while driving on the highway. put 2 bottles of techron fuel injector cleaner and filled the tank with 11 gallons of 91 no ethanol fuel. so far have drove 60 miles without the code popping again. but still think i should look it over. but i have seen these trucks being sensitive to the alcohol content percentage the computer guesses the percentage based on ignition timing and such after fill up. they have no flex fuel sensor.
    before this within the last month i have had e85 mixed in the tank at random vs regular up to 10% ethanol so could of had a error in the calculation.
    how many miles are on your truck. and did it run better after replacing all the injectors?

      Hello Nate, my ruck about 90k on it and I’ve been having this code come and go for a couple years now. I was using a different station for e85 when the problem started to be consistent. Before I was using propel e85 for several years without issue. So I agree that the fuel I was using could have had more alcohol then the other. But also diagnostic test should bad injectors. Nearly a full tank of e85 was removed and replaced with regular gas for now. I may go back to the other propel fuel at a later date.

    Keep having this code on my truck and can’t track down what is going on. Possible injector on the passenger side.

      Is 219A the only code showing? If there is multiple codes fix the others first and that will usually fix 219A. I also had a tough time trying to diagnose the problem. I finally notice #7 cylinder was colder than the rest with the laser thermometer pointed at the exhaust manifold. Since there was no misfire code the only thing left was the fuel injector. I took it to the local service center for a second opinion and they eventually came back with the same findings. I replaced all the injectors due them all having the same miles/hours on them and didn’t want to have to do it again for awhile. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!!

      @@TurnThemWheels My truck did the exact thing. The code would come and go honestly for a couple years but then it just stayed on. I would say you have an injector starting to fail. Have you checked you fuel pressure. Most scan tools can do that in live data setting. My truck eventually started to back fire when starting and would idle rough once started. Since I replaced the injectors it runs like a new truck no more issues. Codes gone!! BUT the factory injectors of expensive. Best though to use quality parts for this repair. There are cheaper injectors but how long will they last. The factory parts worked for 11yrs. Good luck and hope you get it fixed. I recommend you start pricing injectors..

    Hello willy I have a 2012 gmc sierra 5.3 vortech and took it to get obd scanned and they said I might have a bad fuel injector what do you recommend I just get new injectors for it or change my fuel I run I tried the injector cleaner didn't seem to work I currently pump 91 or e85 when I can get it near me

      Hello Xavier, What code is it giving? Are there more than one? First I wanna say my problem was noticed when I was mixing e85 with 87. The mixer had too much alcohol and I had to drain it and refill with just 87. If you have the P219A I would say yes probably need to change the injectors. If there is a second code fix that first and try it. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!!

      Those codes usually deal with MAF, Oxygen sensors or possibly a air/vacuum leak. Inspect all the hoses and intake tube. Make sure everything is connected or plugged in properly. There is a cleaner for MAF sensor but need to be careful when using it not to damage the sensor. The Oxygen sensor well those just get replaced not mush service for those.
      Look for cracks or loose intake tube after the MAF sensor or at throttle body.
      Replacing the injectors is not hard but expensive if not needed. You can also try a laser thermometer pointed at each exhaust outlet on the manifold and look for differences. That may help narrow down a bad injector.

    • @DIYWilly
      @DIYWilly  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The engine uses a virtual sensor for the E85. My truck began having problems accepting the E85 and would give a trouble code for too much alcohol content? Dah it’s E85… Anyway it would run bad while trying to compensate when it was really only regular gas. It would show 80% alcohol while regular is like 10% or maybe 15. I reset the alcohol content and cleared the code. This has happened twice on my truck first time costing me $300 and a full take of gas. The service center told me the gas mixture was wrong…? There could possibly be a firmware update for the truck but I haven’t got any information from the service center yet. So for now no more alcohol!

    Hello Willy, my truck (2012 Sierra 1500, 143k miles) coughs and sputters on a cold start for 15-20 seconds. After that, engine revs up to 1300 rpm for about 1 second and then back down to around 1k and is very smooth idle. The engine has no issue with acceleration, idling, or starting once’s it’s warmed up.
    I’m getting a total of 9 codes (some are duplicates). 6/9 are fuel trim system rich and 2 /9 are fuel trim system lean. The last code is MAP sensor performance. I’ve done spark plugs and wires, and throttle body cleaning and still same issue. Would you assume fuel injectors are next or possibly fuel pump? Any insights into why it only struggles on a cold start and once it is warm, runs and restarts perfectly? Thank you!

      @camerongraham4944 the only part on the engine that I believe would need programming would be the throttle body if it was replaced with a new one. The computer would need to know the throttle positioning. But the injectors or many other sensors do not need programming.

    • @DIYWilly
      @DIYWilly  Před rokem +1

      @camerongraham4944 P0172 and P0175 are related to bank 2 of the engine. Check for vacuum leaks, maf sensor, both oxygen sensors on passenger side of the engine.. These codes show when bank 2 oxygen sensors detect to much or not enough oxygen in the exhaust. I’ve seen similar situations coming from a leak in valve covers or cracked hoses. With the right equipment you can check fuel trims to help diagnose some problems. I also like to use a laser thermometer to see differences in cylinder temperatures helping to identify improper running cylinders.
