Thank you for this great review! I just received my DJI Pocket 3 and I am interested to hear what others have to say about the DJI Pocket 3. I did get the Pocket 3 with the Creator Combo. The combo kit was definitely worth it, especially the Bluetooth wireless mic that comes with it and the additional battery handle. I plan to use this for most of my videos and livestreaming my kids sporting events via FB and/or CZcams.
I appreciate an honest opinion. I don’t do much video now because it’s a hassle setting up a large camera on the crane M3 gimbal. Bulk, balancing, inconvenience etc. The iPhone videos are decent handheld in good light, but maybe the pocket 3 is the better solution?

Very well done…and nice to see an independent review! Few of those which is too bad and it seems that only these comment on issues, albeit very few for this camera. Looks like a great small camera overall! Also great that DJI sells different accessories separately on their web site (such as the battery handle), if you don’t want to buy the combos.

Indeed, it's magic. Due to cash flow problems I could not buy mine until yesterday but I think I have seen every review video at least once - but I was really looking forward to yours. It's my 5th gimbal camera (!) and I'd be happy to sell three of the others now - but the Pocket 2 is still a keeper, especially with its extension rod which is an indispensable aid to creativity, IMHO. I hope DJI will release a similar device for the Pocket 3 before long.
There are some quibbles that could be mentioned. Changing gimbal modes needs too many menu selections. The gimbal lock function cannot itself be locked, unlike on the Pocket 2 - but that came to the Pocket 2 as a FW update, so here's hoping. The persistence of the on-screen messages is irritating. Reducing the number of buttons has some merit but that does mean that some actions get buried in the menus, as mentioned.
There have been three hardware issues that I'm aware of. Overheating has been fixed so that can now be forgotten. Gimbal protection lock when the device is turned on "from cold" seems to be affecting a number of users, including myself. I think this could be because the locking mechanism is not releasing quickly enough with the latest FW before the motors try to move the gimbal. The last one is that there are some failures of the screen rotation mechanism being reported. One reviewer has persuasively speculated that this may be because the screen is getting wrenched away from the body when the camera is taken from the case. Or it could be something else. But it seems a hardware issue rather than a firmware issue, so let's hope the number affected doesn't grow...
Your comments on the "low resolution sensor" were extremely interesting and original. As you say, this makes the digital zoom not worth using (doing it in post production would be just as good) and it limits the photo resolution - but personally neither of those factors worries me much.
I am really looking forward to your further reviews. The device has so many features and abilities that one review is clearly not enough!

Gimbal lock is available by holding down the joystick.I have also has some issues with "gimbal protection" but it doesn't happen with I manually unlock the gimbal, so I am not sure whether that is a defect or intended behavior. Pocket 2 is stills great, I was hoping that 1" Osmo Pocket 3 will be released as Osmo Pocket Pro and there will be a smaller Pocket 3, but I can't complain.
@@TheHybridShooterIndeed gimbal lock is available but you have to keep holding your finger on the joystick. You cannot lock the lock, which means that for some purposes it doesn't work as well as the lockable lock in the Pocket 2.
Would you say that the video quality is better than the insta one rs with the 1 inch Leica mod?

I love my pocket 3. Have used it in a 3 weddings.
Thank you for the review. I think this camera is a very good upgrade to the version 2 but I am still disappointed and how easily it blows up highlights. With a 1" sensor I expected dynamic range to be a bit better. The solution I found is to shoot always with a -3 to -7 EV exposure compensation and later in post pull up the shadows a little bit (usually they are noise free and clean enough for a good looking result). This camera could use tone mapping or better in-camera processing, something maybe later DJI can add as a firmware update or, surely, in the Pocket 4 a few years later.

Thank you for your very helpful and honest review (as usual). You have mentioned that the 120 fps slow motion mode would pre-slow the footage at 24 or 25 fps. Is there an easy and non destructive way to bypass this in order to get a x2 times slow motion to be included in a 60 fps footage?
You're welcome! No, there is not, but it probably won't look particularly bad if you just put it on a 60p timeline.

Thanks for the review. I've been eagerly awaiting your review. I have a little bit of context to add. I believe the Pocket 3 will automatically power off if its temperature reaches 60 degrees Celsius. Under normal conditions, it is unlikely to reach that temperature. However devices registered in the EU have a lower threshold of 48 degrees due to EU consumer safety legislation. On the official DJI forum, a number of EU based users were complaining that they were experiencing very poor recording durations before auto shutdown, especially at 4K60p. Less than 15 minutes in some cases. Non-EU users were not experiencing the same problem. Within about a week, DJI released a new firmware update and it fixed the problems. Those EU users have now reported they can record at 4k60p until the battery or SD card runs out. I was very impressed that DJI actively monitored their forums and provided a solution so quickly. I'm unsure how common this speedy remedy is for camera manufacturers but DJI definitely impressed me with how it handled this issue.
I have tested the battery life after the FW update and I was also able to continuously use 50% of the battery with no issues, so I haven't had any issues with overheating.
Thanks for the thorough review - the pocket 3 feels very tempting. Using the Pocket 2 I was annoyed by the small screen when composing/checking focus...how's the difference?

William - I thought about putting a P3 on my small ratrig slider. I want to slide vertical format, but keep the product/food, in the centre of frame by tracking it. The clips would be shot at 2x zoom so 40mm for social media reels stories etc. Do you think the video quality would be ok for this scenario. I think the res on this type of media is 1080p anyway - plus I do light my subjects.
That depends on your definition of "ok". The loss of image quality is very significant with 2x zoom, I am more inclined to say no.
@@TheHybridShooter yeah your right, its a gamble really. I thought at 2 x that would be 1500 px in vertical and at 1980px height for most SM output there is fall below optimum

Probably not, it can focus pretty close, but it looks a bit weird due to the field of view.

My pleasure! Probably not, I wasn't able to find information about the aspect ratio of this sensor, but I think that 4:3 would already be available if it was technically possible.
@@TheHybridShooter I was pretty sure the sensor was 4:3 aspect ratio, but before release I expected it to be 1:1. Maybe my assumption of 4:3 comes from 16:9 video having 4k on the longer edge while 9:16 and 1:1 have only 3k on the longer edge. So I assumed the sensor is 4:3 with resolution of something like 4000 x 3000 pixels.

@@TheHybridShooter So yeah, I compared the 16:9 and 1:1 modes and the 16:9 can capture significantly wider field of view. Therefore I stay with my assumption that the sensor is 4:3 aspect ratio and will hope for 4:3 recording mode in the future.

Overheating is my only problem with Pocket 3. After some 20-40 minutes of 4K60 recording it tends to overheat (and stop recording) even in 18-20 ambient temp.
The latest firmware update eliminates the overheating issues in EU versions
can it be used while being powered off a USB power bank or can it only be charged off a power bank ? if it can be used whats happens if you try and record for a long time, say 6 hours or more ? does it overheat or have anything else that stops it recording that long ?
It can be charge and used at the same time, I haven't tested overheating in that scenario.
First review that mentions this horrendous focus breathing 👏👏👏👏
I wouldn't say that it is horrible, especially at that size. There are 20mm DLSM lenses with worse focus breathing.
@@TheHybridShooter I wonder if they couldn't mitigate it with some focus breathing compensation. You said sensor is 9.6Mpix and 4k is 8.3Mpix ... so there is some room for improvement.
But maybe they already doing it :D.
@@JoATTech That wouldn't be worth it, since it would quire permanent crop. I don't know what is the exact resolution, but it probably isn't 16:9 sensor, so there might not be any spare resolution.

Anyway Osmo 3 seems like great and fun camera (I actually own it). There are some limitations but with DJI wireless Mic 2 it's really amazing combo.

i think Pocket 3 is not meant to replace the Pocket 2. i think DJI offer a whole new Osmo Pocket for more creative shot and more better quality with 1 inch sensor.
I believe Pocket 2 still have a place in market today, with smaller size and good video quality.
Right now in my country you can get used Pocket 2 in good condition with only a half price of Pocket 3 basic version. And the brand new Pocket 3 Combo package cost the same as ZV E10 with kit lens.
I absolutely agree. I think that the Pocket 2 is still a great device. I was hoping that 1" Osmo Pocket 3 will be released as Osmo Pocket Pro and there will be a smaller Pocket 3, but I can't complain.

Unfortunately, there is no short answer to your question, but I will make a video about that.
I tend to use the control wheel on the pocket two a lot which allows me to pan smoothly drawing to a steady stop, the pocket three's joy stick does not offer this function which is a real disappointment in my opinion I suggest, possibly a firmware fix may be in order , let hope they are listening, great summary video.
Thank you! The joystick on the Pocket 3 only has on / off positions, so it will never be possible to modulate the speed of the movement that way on the Pocket 3.

DJI POCKET 3 has elevated itself to such position that it beats DSLR/Mirrorless cameras in many key areas considering price point. Imagine if, the next generation of the Dji pocket 3 makes improvements in focal length ( addition of 85mm, 35mm as an attachment) backed by bigger sensor with better dynamic range, then the game is over for big camera industries like Canon, Sony, Nikon etc, as the form factor alone is so awesome & practical.
Pocket 3 is a great device for what it is, but I am afraid that your assessment is overly enthusiastic. DSLM cameras with FF or even APS-C sensor are still far ahead of Pocket 3, which is completely fine, because it is not competing with them, at least not directly.

Thank you! I don't know, and I don't really care. If you can't tell whether it is 180 degree shutter by looking at the footage, it probably doesn't matter.
@@TheHybridShooterOf course I can't tell, because there is no moderately fast moving subject in the frame. If you were in front of the camera, I think most people can tell. The reason I ask is for even lower light situations, where raising the shutter speed is not possible due to the limited light, and a lot of cameras that rely on digital stabilization become a motion blur mess.
@@Wildridefilms as you can see in other samples, it won’t use shutter speeds where you would see distracting amount of motion blur.
It may use 1/25 to 1/40s which is completely fine with a consumer device, I wouldn’t insist on following 180 degree rule.
Great review as always. This is the first Pocket that I'm considering to buy, the image quality jump was HUGE.
A silly question: there is a way to manual set the shutter speed to reach a "180 degree" shutter (with a ND filter, of course)?

Good point, but it is much more complicated than that. Pocket 3 has many advantages over the smartphone cameras, I will make a video about that in the future.
Honestly the size increase doesn't seem as significance since it improves overall ergonomics and features. It could probably use a bigger grip but it'll make it longer. I'd say make it's more compact compared to pocketable.
Maybe they can try installing some kind of 1x-3x lens system or zoom functionality. Tho how it'll fit something small without bulking up the module is the real question. Maybe just increase resolution to 12MP or something. Who knows. As for now, it's perfect for what it is.
The size increase is actually beneficial in terms of ergonomics and features, but it is rather significant in terms of the device being "pocket" or not. As I have shown in the video, grip extension is included in the box.
Shame about the focus breathing, I guess these types of shots are best handled by DSLRs.
There are ultra-wide DSLR / DSLM lenses with much worse focus breating.
I saw some people having the Pocket 3's flip screen broken after a few weeks of use.

Just got my DJI Pocket 3 and combo package. I cannot find any information regarding how to get the audio track from the Mic 1on to my micro SD card. When I pair the Mic 1 with the Pocket 3 and record audio, how can I get the audio OFF of the Mic and transferred to my storage (SD card, desktop, etc ) where I can use it in my Premiere Pro editing program?

I’m not sure whether I understand your question, the audio from the mic is already in the video file on the SD card, as long as it paired and everything works properly.
Thanks for responding to my question. I finally figured it out after calling DJI Chat- In the Camera, go to settings, then COG wheel, then "Wireless MIC, then tap on TX1 and pair with the mic 2. On the Mic 2 press the start button until light is blue, then press pairing button.

I was surprised that you didn't talk about the colors in detail. I'm a big fan of the Osmo Pocket 1 and Pocket 2. And one of the main strengths for me was the natural appearing picture profile. But they changed something with the Pocket 3. I would call it fake HDR, so you get slightly colors which look like shot from a smartphone. You can notice this especially if you shoot peoples faces. Through this fake HDR, the faces lose some structure. Highlights and shadows are evened out. It might not be as noticeable for others than it is for me. But if I compare it with my Pocket 1 and Pocket 2, it's kind of obvious for me. I wish I could disable this HDR function.
No, that is not the case, Pocket 3 is not using local tone mapping “fake HDR” I have talked about in the video. iPhone or GoPro footage looks totally different.
Faces would actually gain fake texture if it had local tone mapping, it is shown in my Hero 12 vs Action 4 comparison.
I am happy with all aspects of the color rendering and DR on the Pocket 3, so we will have to disagree on this one.
@@TheHybridShooter I actually can't prove it. It's just my feeling. And if I compare the footage from Pocket 2 to Pocket 3 in daytime, the overall look and appearance from the footage is quite different. And besides HDR, I don't have an explanation for that.
@@bastian.michel At 2:10 there is a comparison with Insta360 Ace Pro, which uses local tone mapping HDR. The processing is completely different as you can see, so that is a proof that the Pocket 3 is not using LTM HDR.
It can simply capture more DR due to superior SnR over the Pocket 2. Some people might prefer lower DR, but I like Pocket 3 DR handling.
The comparison with the Pocket 3 and the action camera at 2:10 is interesting. The parts of the buildings in the bright sunlight behind the fountain appear to be overexposed in the Pocket 3 but not on the action camera.
That action camera uses local tone mapping, which is a very complicated topic and a matter of taste, since it doesn’t look very natural.

OMG. Just got pocket 3 and tested dlog m 10bit. It is recording in rec709 colorspace. This is not true HDR and a complete garbage. Dji have no clue what HDR should be. Color is breaking with slight adjustments. Will test HLG where it should be at least in bt2020. Not happy with DJI false advertisement.
Where exactly did DJI advertise that D-Log M will use BT2020? Even professional DSLMs use Rec 709 for Log.
10-bit D Log M is adequate for a consumer device.
