Complete Short Line Railroad Switching Job On I&O Railway! American Railway Shunting Action!

  • American railway carriage shunting at its best! Short line railroad I&O complete customer switching job. Indiana And Ohio Railway, IORY, used an EMD GP50 to switch an industrial railroad spur east of Cincinnati in the town of Leesburg Ohio on the Greenfield Sub. The train brought 3 tank cars to Candle Lite. Candle Lite already had 5 tank cars on their siding next to the ex Baltimore & Ohio Railroad mainline. The cars were shuffled around and the local picked up 3 after setting off 3. Listen in on 161.295 for this branch and 161.220 for the Midland Sub which is the connection that this dead end branch line runs off of in Midland, Ohio. On August 25, 2020 I was filming this line and they used 161.220 while switching Leesburg and Greenfield so either frequency could be used. This line use to be a through route but was cut in the 80s. CSX sold this line to the town of Greenfield, Ohio and they lease it to I&O. There are 3 main customers on the 20 something mile long line. The best days to catch a train on this line are Tuesdays and Thursdays although I have seen trains on Sundays also. Filmed June 9, 2020.

I remember the days when mixed freights, intermodals and coal trains cruised through Leesburg at 50 MPH (80 KPH) about 18 of them a day. In addition there were 2 Amtraks, one from Washington to Cincinnati and one from Cincinnati to Washington. None of which stopped in Leesburg during the Amtrak era, Loveland and Chillicothe were the nearest stations at the time. Amtrak might have done 60 MPH (100 KPH) through Leesburg.
I'd love to see a shot of a train going across the trestle at East Monroe Falls on Rattlesnake Creek near Leesburg.

Another fine video. Again you outdo yourself in attention to detail, camerawork, and informative narration. I loved that tidbit you slipped in about the depot being restored. It’s always nice to hear about the local citizenry getting together to preserve a piece of historic value. What would they do with it otherwise? Tear it down and leave an empty lot, or put up a hamburger stand? Maybe in the future you could fill us in on the history of the depot as they restore it. The four most beautiful words on CZcams: “But wait, there’s more!”

They are fast. I paid for a drive a locomotive experience at the Portola railroad museum 2018. I drove a SP Gp9 Highhood (the WP F7 broke down just before I was due to drive it!). From Notch 2 to 3 to notch four and you are really accelerating (almost running away with itself) fast, faster than you would think!

If you're watching a video and he doesn't mention, Googling the railroad and engine number (e.g., "IORY 5014") almost always gets the result straight away. rrpicturearchives.net is usually among the top couple of hits and it's a great resource. In this case, it also tells you that the loco was built in December 1980 for Burlington Northern.

I saw the 5014 years ago in BN paint south of Brookville,Ind on the now abandoned north end of the former NYC Brookville branch.
It was in white face paint.
5104 was ordered as SLSF 794 but delivered as BN 3104.
Only 1 SLSF GP50 was delivered in SLSF paint and this was not the one. I remember once driving past EMD/Chicago and in the distance seeing new SLSF SD40-2s waiting for delivery.
