All entirely Nigel’s fault. WAY over the limit into the Old Hairpin- as he’d done previously. He was heading onto the grass at 100mph+ in any case. Tiff really had nowhere to go as the Mondeo speared across the track….

Needel was a chippy talentless twat. Mansell a personality nightmare but Needell by his own admission helped him on his way to the barriers.

That was nasty. I remember that made the front pages of every newspaper the next day, that's how big it was
As for the incident, You can't apportion any blame on anyone, Mansell just got loose out of old hairpin, was slow to recover and Needell just had nowhere to go, you can see he braked hard just to try to avoid Mansell but couldn't avoid hitting him without wrecking himself

Singer/Guitarist Chris Rea as also in this race in a BMW although it was Mansell on the road to hell!!! Massive smash....the commentators were David Addison (now doing commentary on the BTCC on ITV) and 89 and 95 champ John Cleland. Mansells grunting noisily as those cars had no power steering in those days (as Cleland states in the commentary), and were quite physical to drive. Mansell had huge upper body strength - Adalaide 86 proves that when he wrestled with his car after his famous 200mph tyre explosion - but the muscles used to drive a single seater, ie: F1/Indycar, are vary different from those used to drive a Touring Car. The speed of impact was probably between 60 and 80mph, and quite slow compared to some accidents, BUT he struck solid, old style, bridge that provided no "give" and did nothing to absorb the energy. The Mondeo was destroyed and the drivers head came out of the window and possibly even hit the wall. As a result it became compulsory for all drivers in pro level race cars to have a special "net" over the drivers door window to prevent an arm or head leaving the vehicle in an accident.

marky mark cleland's vauxhall had power steering as did Sopers BMW. A lot of the others had power steering but either being a traditionalist or wanting to save weight Andy Rouse never used power steering. His Toyota carinas never had it and neither did his ford mondeo. I actually think the crash between rouse and hoy was partially caused by the steering for the way the car naturally reacts when it goes over bumps

No net. No 3-sided headrest. No HANS device. And the way he instinctively moves his head to the left would have only increased the opportunity for his head to pick up momentum as it was thrown to the right, towards the wall, on impact. A miracle he wasn't killed.

No way was Tiff at fault in this accident, Mansell was pushing really hard and was already out of control and heading back across the track when Needell hit him. He had no time to react at all. I was stood right there on the infield at the time, It was a big one for sure. I was a huge Mansell fan but I was disappointed when he tried to put the blame on Tiff afterwards.
