What do you wear when cycling through the city?
I don't care about clothing but Not going to forget to wear helmet!
Mostly school uniform because way to school is the most I ride for commute.
That's something we never condone, so we're right there with you, AlastoroidTNC.
Would have liked to see some links to the clothes that you recommend.
I cycle to school with an extra flexible and crumple resistant school t-shirt
I bike to work just about every day. I'm fortunate that my current employer has a very nice change room (with nice clean showers) and I have my own spacious locker. I wear shorts, t-shirt, etc, in the warmer months and parka, jeans, long-johns, in the winter. We even have an in-door bike lock up. Probably the sweetest deal in Winnipeg for cyclists.
Winter cycling in Winnipeg! I salute you, sir!
Thanks. It is largely based on the conditions of the road. I prefer to cycle on the tertiary roads, but they get the least love from our snow-removal team. Temperatures and such are manageable by dressing properly (I'm old enough to put function ahead of form).
Northern New Hampshire here and I have to hang it up after a few snow falls. They plow it all to the side of road but donât remove it frequently. The snow banks build quickly and I just run out of room.
Sounds like you have an ideal set up for cycling to work!
Do the jeans last okay? Theyâre what i wear mostly and almost always for work and so prefer to cycle in them but find I wear through the crotch really quickly. If youâre not having the same problem, could you let me know what saddle you are using! Thanks
Great to see such topics covered - makes GCN live up to its name, after all not all Cycling is racing!
Thanks Frazer!
All right, I'll stop wearing my skinsuit to the market. Yeesh.
I won't
how about speedo?
Hiking gear is perfect for urban cycling, I use a lot of my Montane gear for my bike.
In fact cycling and hiking are very closely related, the only major difference between them is fit and weight.
Hiking pants work well because they're designed to be breathable, designed with movement in mind, water resistant/proof and adjustable at the ankle, if needed.
My waterproof jacket is perfect as well, it has pit zips, reflective details and breathable.
You could add toughness and durability, hiking clothes are designed to be tough and reliable in foul weather, nothing worse than cycling in damp clothes.
If you look more towards the fell runner's type of kit, you can find some surprisingly useful clothes for the road.
Multipurpose, perfect!
I agree, I weat my Marmot rain coat for cycling and its perfect
Oh that is such a great shout! Going to be commuting in my Mountain Equipment gear from now on.
still nobody from the Netherlands in the comments saying you can wear your business suit just as well and it ain't no big deal...
This is an dutch invented artform
we could all use more exercise, says travolta, while being in incredible shape....
Kyle Okamoto I was thinking the same
Emma looks like every supply teacher I ever had đ
More of this please.
Glad you are enjoying the urban series Scott
GCN: Ladies, consider a high-neck t-shirt
Me: to avoid flashing?
GCN: goodness no, you do you, it's to avoid things like bees and wasps
Me: đź
yesssss so wholesome!
Loving this urban series!
Cheers Jon!
Flies always end up in my eyes, I wouldn't be able to see much with a neckline that high
Chrome Industries makes some very cool cycling friendly clothing. Their shorts are super high quality.
If you commute daily on your bicycle to work, having a pannier rack and good pannier bag as you donât get a sweaty back, it was the most useful thing I bought for my commuter bike.
I love how these tips work both for two wheel and three wheels
Cargo shorts in summer, cargo shorts and leg warmers in autumn and cargo shorts with running tights in summer.
Some of the online retailers have Dutch (bright orange) or Brazilian (bright yellow) football team tracksuit tops at heavily reduced prices. I paid less than ÂŁ20 for the Dutch one and it comes with zip pockets.
Waterproofs and overshoes added where necessary.
I use m520âs and mountain bike shoes.
Thanks for sharing your top tips
Excellent tips and yet another awesome video by GCN. It would be great to have a list of the gear and clothing featured in the videos.
Good tip to know. All this time I've been wearing my work clothes when cycling and by the time I got there, I'm sweating a lot. Thanks you for that đ
Schindelhauer is simply an awesome bike. Looks cool. Paired with Automatix just makes it even better.
Si's sock game is STRONG!!
It really depends on the bike you're using. To get to work or just generally around the city I use a dutch style roadster and with that I can basically wear anything I want. I can wear a suit or even long coats reaching over my knees and still ride comfortably without getting any dirt on my cloth.
Great photography around Bristol, thanks
Rain, sun, sleet or snow, if I'm exercising (gently or not) I sweat. It's a gigantic pain because whenever I cycle anywhere that requires decent clothing and not smelling awful I have to be early. For someone who finds being on time a struggle, that's hard. On the upper hand, I can't remember the last time I met up with people so I don't have to worry about this very often.
sweat =/= smell
This also speaks of an infrastructure issue. In the Netherlands, for example, they dress for the _destination_, not the journey.
Yeah, most people sweat when riding, unless everything is flat, you have perfectly paved separate lanes and you ride a granny bike granny fast(Netherlands).
What most people don't realise is that if you take a shower and apply a bit of deodorant before leaving, all you need to do is change out of the t-shirt you arrived in and, I guarantee, you'll be odorless as much as the next guy in the office.
Literally takes 30 seconds to wipe the sweat off with a paper towel and change your shirt. It's a very commonly used excuse though, but not really a valid one for most people.
Source: A sweat prone, perpetually late, 15km in one direction commuter through a not completely flat area with infrastructure so bad, just thinking of it would make most cyclist from developed countries break into sweat and give up before even leaving.
wear what you want, ride what you want
Many jean brands sell pairs that are very stretchy and perfect for shorter commutes (my favourites are Extreme Flex from American Eagle). They don't move or chafe around the seat area, don't limit motion, don't slide down and are tighter around the ankles. Perfect for more casual offices or commuting students
Rolling up your right trouser leg is a massive commuter expression of style. Sock choice is also very important. Also that was a magnificent lunge from Si.
Thanks, he's been practising
Useful video guys....nice to see you're in Bristol as well! :)
Also, Si and (especially) Travolta's bikes are stunning!
Thanks :)
Just getting back in cycling as a college student. Got a nice Montague paratrooper and just getting used to the saddle.
I like this topic and I don't need wear Like a PRO. Thanks and support!
I am getting away from the tight lycra and pro look and transforming to the retro myself so this video is welcomed and about time. Lets see more stuff like this.
Glad you enjoyed this one Charles
i like your advice very much, i personally use normal cloths, clip my pants (both pant) with fluorescent band and try not to cycle too hard when it's wet or hot
This is what I was looking for.
I recommend DZR shoes for commuting. They work with SPD pedals and they look like regular shoes.
Rain capes and fenders for wet weather. My cape came from bicycleclothing.com for about $50 and has gotten me through some torrential rains. Cleverhood makes some nice upscale models. With waterproof jackets, even "breathable" ones, I was getting as wet from trapped sweat as I would from the rain. The rain cape with fenders leaves only my feet a bit damp even in heavy rain. The open bottom leaves plenty of room for air to circulate.
Another top vid guys - Iâm toying with the idea of a daily commute following a fun âcycle to Work Dayâ ride.. clothing was the main issue.. gotta watch out for watering cans too by the looks of things!
Thanks Rich, glad you enjoyed it
was going through the beginner cyclist playlist and this video felt really weird to me.. then I remembered I'm dutch. So.. never mind good video!
My commuter/ everyday bike has toe clips and strap and I couldn't do without them. Plus you can wear your normal shoes!
Always lycra! Got to get the QOM/KOMs
Always? I like lycra, by it's appearance and by its function. But my weight is 105 kg and height 175 cm. It will look very weight, didn't you think?
I'd like to suggest a video topic I've not seen. Safest/best ways to cycle with a toddler. Love the content! Safe riding and cheers!
I once tried a trail adapter for a kids bike. Despite doing bolts up tight, my son overtook me on a bend. Never used it again, but did buy a dutch bike with a double carrier cart in front, like an ice cream bike. Great fun. www.christianiabikes.com/product/26/
Please DO NOT do this video! Don't need ignorant advice from sports/racing cyclists on how to bicycle with toddlers
Just let 'em stand on the bars and enjoy the breeze :)
The best way to ride with a toddler is to use someone elses
Anthony,
Check out the Xtracycle Hooptie, I have one and my granddaughters, age 3 and 4 LOVE IT!! Xtracycle has a website and they have been selling complete bikes, some with electric assist for years now. My old Gary Fisher has the original Freeradical with the Hooptie and Magic Carpet. The girls ride it regularly with me on roads and trails, my wife follows on her bike when we are on the road for safety. It beats the heck out of a trailer, and I have one of those as well. The trailer collects dust!
3:11, I thought Emma was going to take off! Great stuff....Ride on! Tim
DidnÂŽt find it mentioned in a trice ... as a new daily workplace commuter (due to covid) i started recently here in Berlin, wearing (at least if itÂŽs not too warm) my ski protector jacket for protecting my spine and back!
I must wonder a bit that this is obviously still no theme at least for professional roadies, ÂŽcause it also became for professional downhill ski racers with similar risks already a few years ago
Wow!..what a tips..thanks
I have found that longer underwear (8" or so) doesn't ride up causing me to have to pull it back down after the ride. I have also come to find underwear that has a pouch for men's nether regions really helps with keeping it all together and more comfortable.
My favorite is saxx quest 2.0.
The weather changes fast in west Texas, not to rain, but temp wise. I always carry a wind jacket in my backpack when I bike to school. It helps to cut the north winds and can act as a short-term rain jacket.
Stretchy pants and shorts are a must now, they are more expensive to look nice as well, but they have improved cycling immensily.
An active synthetic insulation layer is great as it helps keep you warm but can expel heat easier. I have the arcteryx atom LT. (expensive)
Last thing is I keep rubber/latex gloves in my saddle bag for drivetrain repairs, and if it gets really cold they can help for a while.
Hope this helps someone.
I recommend nice stretchy Rohan trousers; really comfortable on the bike, dry extremely quickly, and they last forever! Particularly if you tuck the bottoms into your socks, which I find better than carrying cycle clips or rolling the trouser leg up.
Oh, and only use a backpack if you want a sweaty back - otherwise get panniers. They hold more too.
I could add hiking shoes and boots as well, waterproof, tough, good grip on the pedals.
Nice choice, is that what you go for?
@@gcn. It's what I'm aiming for, once I've upgraded to sram eagle 1x12 group set and Rockshox trekking forks, I'm hoping I'll have a hybrid that I could go where I would normally hike but use it as a daily driver in town.
My waterproof hiking boots are what I wear everytime its raining. Luckily mine are all leather and can look nicer in a casual office.
New channel: Global Commuter Cycling Network. Can you do all NCN routes, please?
Nice idea!
Here in Texas I ride in a pair of cargo shorts and Nike air force ones but no shirt during the summer.
Works great just as it should
Even if I'm going through the city, but it's a training ride I wear normal kit. Otherwise if it's a leisure ride I just wear whatever I have on at the time
I'm always struggling to find reasonably priced commuter cycling gear...stuff that is neither road lycra or baggies but is still comfortable.
That belt drive bike Si is using is a dream
They're so cool!
Cool video !
Thanks Killer -Gamer!
Great vids about city riding and commuting! How about you branch out into touring? Lot's of potential videos on bikes, gear, gear ratios, conditioning, planning, etc.
Thanks Tom for the suggestion, we will look into it!
Paramo cycling jeans, nice and light and showerproof with normal tee shirt or Merino base. Depending on temp either Paramo Ciclo jacket or Montane windproof. Gore-Tex lined walking trainers . All -except jeans - double up as my walking gear and are fine for strolling around in.
Oh, and, if itâs warm ,shorts and normal undies for up to 25 miles .
Working in a production plant, Iâm going to get all sweaty at work anyways so I still cycle hard in my normal work clothes
It would be nice to see urban bike reviews too!
perhaps even compared to gravel bikes and road bikes
Nice idea, thanks for the suggestion
simons bikes are always dope af
It's a Schindelhauer đ
This video would be a lot shorter in The Netherlands :-).... Just take your bike and go to work, done. No special clothes needed, if you need to wear a suit and tie at work, no problem, you will even look stylish on your bike. Also no helmet needed here because of our great road safety and cycle paths which are separated from the roads... and flip flops are actually great to cycle with in summer...
really wish the UK was like that.. it sounds like a dream
what are the models of the bikes you ride in this video? VEry nice belt drives and grips)
I live in a suburban area and its nearly summer here. During my daily commute, I will be biking at around 1-5pm in the afternoon and people will be wearing yellow vest and jackets and have 2-3 bike lights on, flashing in my face when the sun is at its highest point and its 70 degrees or 21C outside. Which is straight up ridiculous.
Mr. Travolta's "baggy" shorts fit him like damn lycras... How much does he squat? :D
Brooks on GCN? I never thought I'd see the day, but it makes me happy. Getting it wet at 5:21 though? đ±
You beat me to it!
Can you write on what models of bikes were you riding on? Because they look really cool especially with belt drivetraines :)
Hi there, would love to know the name/ Brand of the casual lycra shorts you're using on this video, they look sleek
i know they are expensive but the Rapha randonee shorts are really worth the money. You can sweat in them and they breath, and the zip pockets means nothing falls out.
I think the most important takeaway from this video is the necessity of getting a pair of Si's socks with the bicycle print.
2 in 1 bibs. You hide the lycra. Removable chamois shorts have pockets; wear a casual shirt.
Nice commuter clothing choice!
Fist bump to Si for that belt drive commuter bike đ€đđ€
'true scott man, please take note" đ€Łđ€Łđđ
What company was that rain jacket? Please and thank you.
Where can I buy that gray bike with the fenders at, online?
Can I ask you which shorts brand/model you use in 0:45? Thanks a lot in advance đ
I was considering going to a thrift ship and buying a dressy type of shirt. cutting the sleeves off, and using them to stay out of the sun. and maybe using the rest of the shirt to cover my neck
3:24 is that a call of duty hit marker sound or is that just the sound the trousers made
Need to know what that bag holder on the front of si's bike is called, I'm looking for one of those.
@Siv Porteur rack
I saw guys wear some sports watches such as Garmin or Sunnto and I wonder how important it is in doing sports. I always wear an analog watch and I want ask should I get a sports watch to go to sports in daily life?
Nice viedo
Living in Phoenix, AZ I don't think there is such a thing as a seemless transition without having to shower.
Ok , Iâm not sure what was the funniest. Simon giving himself a wedgie. Emma being rained on . Or Emma talking about what has probably happened to every cyclist ever at some point of time . Hilarious đ€Ł
Haha, glad you enjoyed it, Phillip!
What size in Liters backpack is the man in all black wearing for his cycling commutes.
What nice bikes to the fellas riden? Schindelhauer?
What make/brand is the jacket that Emma wears in the film? It's nice.
It's PedalEd đ
Sometimes, it doesnt matter what colours you wear or even if youre lit up like a big christmas tree... Someone will still hit you or pass you close enough to whisper 'SMIDSY' in your ear. The overall standard of driving is pretty low in the UK. While not all drivers are bad. A lot of them pick up bad habits or drop their standard of driving and drive however they want regardless of risk to other road users because once they have their license there are no further checks and the police fail to protect the rights of cyclists every year on the road and hand out paltry fines or 'warnings' for offenses committed and thats *IF* they can even be bothered to investigate the evidence....
I have known other cyclists with camera footage of vehicles passing so close they were clipped by wing mirrors but the MET still says there is "Insufficient evidence" to warrant any action taken. And failure to uphold road laws/rules/regulations has even ment that bad drivers getting away with murder or attempted murder in the past.
Yet... the government jumps hoops when they can bring laws or Legislation where cyclists can be charged with 'death by dangerous driving' --- Now compare the yearly figures of the deaths caused by cyclists to those caused by people behind the wheel of a 2tonne vehicle....
What size backpack in liters is the man using for his bike commutes?
6:52 Travolta all dressed up but nowhere to go!
A bell đ is mandatory on the handlebar in Canada.
I wear flipflop even in long rides when i gotten lazy to find my socks
travolta has some quads man!!
Sharp eye
đȘ
What are the shorts that Chris wears? Like mtb shorts, but more fitted for road and commute riding.
They are PedalEd đ
Do you need knee support for cycling?
the most replayed portion is when he pulls up his undies LOL!!đ
meanwhile in a tropical country near the equator...
Where can i get that front bike rack ? đ
What kind of bike is the silver one? Thanks!
Ok dug through the comments. schindelhauerbikes.com
anyone knows what pedal is that? 2:23
What is the brand of these bikes please ?
What front pannier bag does Si have ?
I advise to get a bike with a guard around your chain or belt drive. It keeps your clothing cleaner and it is a greater safety feature than a bike helmet. Getting something like a trouser or something else stuck in there will make you tumble.
First day I ride on a normal outfit for an hour and know it hurts, 2days later it still hurts.
I want to ride my bicycle inside the town. 4times a day 20min each time. What should I do to prevent saddle sore in normal outfit?
What menâs cycling shorts are worn @ 36 seconds?
