    The game at the end is called mahjong. The significance of what Rachel does during the game is that she gives away the winning piece and let Eleanor win. When she shows all of her tiles before she walks away, It’s her showing that she is sacrificing her crucial piece that could make her win to Eleanore referencing in their conversation when she says "Only a fool folds a winning hand." She could have take the win and start a new life with Nick but she sacrifices her love, giving Eleanor the example in the game. This one simple action shows that Rachel loves Nick enough to let him go, that family is first, and that she's a lot more like Eleanor than Eleanor was giving her credit for. That game is what changes her mind about letting Nick marry her.

    21:33 It's an Asian thing to refuse things people offer you, they will keep insisting that you take it, and after two or three times, you eventually give in anyway

      @@Izzyneedscoffee That's interesting. I have seen many times in Black culture that refusing to take something that is offered to you is considered rude and disrespectful. Such as food. Usually you are asked once or twice if you want whatever is offered to you. And if the person is generous they will ask you a third time. After that you may end up hungry.

    • @Izzyneedscoffee

      @@ashleydowney1222 When others offer you food, especially your elders, you're expected to stand and bring your plate over for them to put it on your bowl/plate easier (with both hands). Whereas gifts, money, etc, you'll have to refuse a few times until they push it into your hands. I don't get the logic but that was what we were taught growing up.

      In the book it's worse. In the movie at least her friend warned her and dressed her up. In the books, the Youngs were so rich that they were hidden even from the nouveau rich, so Pek Lin (sorry don't know how to write her name) didn't even know about Nick and didn't warn her so she showed up with no knowledge of nothing with a normal dress.

      100% I can totally understand wanting to protect himself but he should have given her a heads up when she agreed to go meet his family. She had no idea what she was facing and kind of sucks to have to hear everything from other people as opposed to your partner.

      @@Adme55Yeah. Peik Lin had a smaller role and didn't speak like this in the book either. The youngs are so rich in the book that they don't even have businesses to run, which is different in the movie as well. It's actually a running mystery in all 3 books, how rich the Youngs actually are and how other rich people who know them create these myths and stories about how much hidden wealth their grandmum has.

    This is real in every Asian culture...
    That line "You will never be enough." is more like a reality check for any woman who will marry an Asian guy, rich or not, coz Asian -in-laws, specially the mom, will always see the imperfections. Basically, in most Asian countries, you marry not just the guy but everything about him, his family and culture coz we consider marriage as a union of 2 families.
    Nomatter how well you get along with your in-laws, nomatter how long the relationship is, there will always be something wrong coz you maybe brought up differently or how things are handled.

      In their mind, these outsiders will never fit into our family.
      And we weren't even rich. SMH

    @needyverse Před měsícem +20

    The mahjong game at the end is important because Rachel let Eleanor have the piece she needed to win, but Rachael had a winning hand the whole time and simply held it back. It's Rachel showing Eleanor that Rachel actually had all the power in their hostile relationship (even while Eleanor thought she was winning), and that everything Eleanor will have from this point is because Rachel gave it to her - not because Eleanor won it herself. Eleanor can't even enjoy the 'victory' because she will always have to think about how Rachel chose the future for her (like what she says from 56:32).

  • @Banyo__
    @Banyo__ Před měsícem +32

    In India, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries there are only like 15 or so ultra rich families that control the majority of the power and wealth. Everyone knows these families and they make themselves known. They keep the wealth where it is. They send their kids abroad for their education, typically to England, Switzerland, France, and when they come back, they are excpected to either take over or work for their families. Daughters can also work for the companies either in an actual working capacity or they're made to do PR things (smiling and looking good behind their husbands), and are expected to have kids to continue on the legacy. If one of these kids decides they are going to marry for love (i.e. someone poor and not in their inner circles), these families will actively try to bury them or will prevent their children from seeing these "peasants." In some cases, they will even force those not in the life to get educated and be instructed on how to be a part of their families while lying about their origins. It's intense. People always think of the English monarchy when they think of these types of stories, but nope, its global as well.

      I bought all three books. I like the movie better. I had to jump around to get through the books. Kevin Kwan spent way too much ink on what people wore or own and much less on character development. Rachel was a weak character in the book. The mahjong scene was added by the scriptwriter Adel Lim. He's not a good writer. He writes about rich people he knows. Given his family connections he knows a lot of old and new money families in Asia. He intended to satirize them. Characters and plots are weak.

    29:37 It’s called epiphyllum oxypetalum aka Queen of the Night. It’s a slow-growing, jungle epiphytic cactus, and yes, it goes into full bloom in just 1 hour, and the blooms only last around 2-4 hours, once a year. It’s similar to dragonfruit cactus, which also blooms for a short period of time, and both their fruits are edible.
