My father has been doing business in China for last 25 years and at the beginning, he used to communicate only with hand gestures, body language and facial expressions :D
Only in last 10 years that lots of people learned English for business and as like many others, my father learned basic Chinese too.

Waving with just your fingers is also considered rude in the US. Usually if parents are mad at their children they will call them over using that gesture.
