      I admit it’s not convenient but unfortunately, 😔Chinese is a language with many homophones and polysemous words. For example, the word "yuán yīn" can mean "原因reason", "元音vowel", "原音original sound", or "缘因origin, cause", If we were to remove Chinese characters, we would need to add many more pronunciations to compensate for the loss of meaning conveyed by the characters. This is evident in Zhao Yuanren's "The Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den施氏食狮史(shī shì shí shī shǐ)", which relies heavily on the use of Chinese characters to convey meaning…

    Thank you for that thorough explanation! You might be interested to learn that while "hail" today means to call out to or get someone's attention, the word originally meant "good health". Hail, hello, hale, and health all have the same root word, hale. Also, the Romans used to greet each other the same way, saying "salve/salvete", meaning "be healthy".

    To clarify the stupid video lesson: You start practicing from the basic easier X. It is sort of funny sounding S. You try to utter S, while your tongue is pressed against your lower teeth. The result seems to sound close to the English S or TH, but it's not identical and the Chinese speakers will sense the difference. IPA: [ɕ] After mastering the X, move to J. It is like the Chinese X sound but now try to add T in front of it. It sounds close to an English TS (caTS), but again it's not identical. It is very difficult for the English speakers because they can hardly say TS at the beginning of a syllable. IPA: [t͡ɕ] Finally, move to Q. It is like the Chinese J sound, but now you add an H after the J sound, without generating a new syllable. Linguistically this is called "aspiration". In several Asian languages there are aspirated consonants, meaning they are merged with the H sound. The Chinese Q sounds close to TS'H, but with a nuance. IPA: [t͡ɕʰ]

    I never knew the English h was glottal. I have always produced the h by simply exhaling. No activation of the throat. Perhaps with British. Their English seems a bit more guttural. Well it's worked for me since I was a child so whatever works I guess.

    It's really difficult to start perceiving them as different sounds, even more for me, because in my native language (Brazilian Portuguese) they are actually allophones. Anyway, thanks for the video. You have a very standard pronunciation for those sounds, I mean, I noticed that some people, especially women, make them as some sort of "palatal zi/ci/si", so you kind a hear an "s" sound attached to them!

    finally somewhere I can ask this:....if the 'ch' is aspirated, as opposed to 'zh', uh.....I get that there can be an unaspirated 'p' or 'd', (though I can't make them) but....how can there be an unaspirated 'sh'?

    • @xXJ4FARGAMERXx
      @xXJ4FARGAMERXx Před 2 lety

      P is a stop, it's also unvoiced, and it can be aspirated or unaspirated T is a stop, it's also unvoiced, and it can be aspirated or unaspirated Sh is a fricitive, it also unvoiced, and it can only be in one way Zh is an affricate (a stop followed by a fricitive), it's also unvoiced, so that's why it can be aspirated or unaspirated. Notice a pattern? Any time a stop is involved, you can make it aspirated or unaspirated.
