- Union Pacific's steam locomotive #3985 (at the time this program was produced) was the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. This 4-6-6-4 locomotive, built in 1943 , ran as part of the railroad's public relations program.
In this video, we'll follow 3985, which is also called the "Challenger", in Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma & Texas as she shows the public what big steam was really like.

Bro was a sex offender. Not a good guy, not someone to remember
Hard to believe that 3985 is no longer apart of the UP steam program and now resides in Illinois undergoing a rebuild for a new lease on life.
So UP didnt loan the engine to them? They own 3985 now?
@@dillonohlemiller401 they donated it and the other equipment to them.
@@atsfevan0242 so it doesn’t belong to UP anymore?
@@dillonohlemiller401 correct, that's how a donation works .
@@atsfevan0242 for what I understand of the donation agreement that if the UP wanted 3985 back the group that owns her now would give her back, but would be compensated. I think in form of another piece of equipment but I’m not exactly sure of that
I remember watching this on dvd as a child. I’m so glad to have found it on nice again. Truly an amazing film and locomotive. Thank you railway Productions for reuniting me with a childhood favorite!
Yes! What a beautiful program, my favoritone. My favorite DVD from RP and the challenger 3985 is such a wonderful locomotive!
I really enjoy seeing the old school footage of Challenger 3985 in operation, this locomotive is currently being rebuilt at a railroad maintenance facility in Silvis, Illinois for a second chance return to service. I will miss the 3985 being in operation, however I am pleased that big boy locomotive 4014 joined the UP rr heritage fleet & made a return to operation back in 2019.
4014's arival was a welcome relief for 3985 as the latter was more or less getting worked pretty hard and needs some down time for repairs.
12:22 All aboard for Council Bluffs!
#3985 will return so will #5511 and the other locomotives shown in this film. RRHMA has them and they are being restored even as we speak.
4 Legendary Locomotives. They have no choice but to run a quadruple header at least once. Challenger, 844, Big Boy and 5511 will be reunited
You Mean They Will Return to Cheyenne WY For A Visit and When The 3985 operates again He Will be The Second largest Operational Steam Locomotive
I, with my mother, saw this locomotive come through Claremore, Oklahoma, in the late 90s. It was then billed as the world's largest active steam locomotive. Of course, this was before UP rebuilt the 2014 Big Boy for excursions. I really wish I could find those pictures of myself and my mother siding up to this behemoth while she was still alive.
54:15 my favorite part
I’ve been waiting ages to watch that video once more
Wonderful program!
Agreed
5:28 All aboard for North Platte!
Looks very good I watched the video when I was childhood
the Challenger who's gonna get steamed .
It's astounding how much as changed since this video was made.
3985's no longer *the* largest operating steam engine, she had been out of service since 2010 only to then be officially retired from the UP steam program a good twelve years later, and is now undergoing a second restoration under new owners and a new program. And 5511 no longer lurks in those UP sheds, having joined 3985 in being relocated and is finally being given the restoration treatment.
The UP may not operate 3985 anymore, but part of me still holds out hope that we'll see her reunite with 844 and join 4014 as part of some "Big Three" (maybe even "Big Four" if you wanna count 5511) reunion type of event in the future.
I’m hoping that 3985 will reunite with the 844 and the 4014 someday!
47:16, I love it when it hits the diamond!
Delighted Thanks 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Awesome video
42:36 the Union Pacific train has departed St. Louis and returning back to Cheyenne for her trip home!!!

Nice! This was one of my favorite programs from you while growing up.
Nice video! I'm so ready for this
49:18, I love it when it hits the diamond!
at least 3985 has a new lease on life and 5511 will run at last after years and years in the back shop
I guess this video is posted on CZcams in honor of #3985’s 80th birthday, correct?
00:58:16 my favorite part of this song
Do you happen to know the name of it? I can't find it anywhere

Beautiful steam locomotive 🚂 👍😁
Now that I realize it I guess that gray strip on the side of the screen was not an issue with my dvd.
As I’m watching this video, I got sad news to tell all of you on longtime UP Steam member, Bob Krieger. He passed away at the age of 75 last year at the exact moment when the UP Heritage Equipment was being donated to the RRHMA. He’ll be missed.
Bob was a good guy...
What a legend. Rest easy Bob❤❤.
So, is this the Original program on the 3985 in 2001, not the one from 2007 or 2008?
Yes it is
46:33 reminds me of a shot i got of big boy 4014 sitting in coffeyville kansas in 2019.
I have it on dvd
As do I, but mine got slightly damaged
Same.
0:16 I honestly thought that that song sorta sounded like something that would have come from Thomas.
Alright 2 new Steam train videos are coming up
Great video! I have this one about UP 3985 on DVD! Will you do any video programs on Portland's most 2 famous steam locomotives, the SP&S 700 and the SP 4449 Daylight?
4449 is in "Big Steam" which will be uploaded shortly.
@@RailwayProductions Awesome! I can't wait to see it!
Is this The same 3985 Program that came in The America By Rail DVD Boxset?
Now it's 2023, Bob Krieger passes away, and Challenger 3985 along with 2-10-2 5511, Centennial Diesel 6936 and other equipment were donated to Silvis IL.
I have this😂😂😂😂 I love it, it made my childhood😊❤❤

Believe it or not, the 4014 currently is safer to operate because it has not had such a lengthy excursion career
Well it's sad to see both the formerly world's largest operating steam locomotive UP #3985, largest single unit diesel locomotive UP #6936, and UP #5511 no longer part of Union Pacific's heritage fleet. And Union Pacific donated those locomotives to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis, Illinois because all 3 locomotives needed more restoration work than the Union Pacific Steam Team had time to do it wasn't a financial issue Union Pacific proved that by dumping millions of dollars in restoring UP #4014 now the world's largest operational steam locomotive. And with UP #3985 it was non-operational since 2010 rumors of had it it's boiler was shot it needed a new boiler and the same frame up restoration work that UP #4014 needed hopefully someday it might return to its home rails of the Union Pacific system but we'll see.

Challenger is still running on my mobil railroad 👍👍😊😊Sub from Peter
Why has no one thought of remaking the introduction theme song of this episode?
She'll be back soon don't worry only took 16 years.

I really enjoy seeing these steam engines of past, still in operation. But, I am a little confused, about the remark, that you made in the beginning, of this video, namely that the Chalenger is the biggest locomotive, in operation today, or something to that effect. I know that the Big Boy [#4014] is in operation, and I have been watching numerous videos, on 4014,and was under the impression that 4014, is the biggest & most powerful, of the steam engines, operating today. And I don't mean to diminish the Chalenger, by my remarks. I do, very muc]h enjoy All of the steam engines.
When this video was produced 4014 was not operational.
42:37 Depart St. Louis
One thing UP has of Challenger is 4014 is using 3985s tender and vice versa. So will they swap tenders when Challenger is brought back or will they keep each others tenders
They will swap.

The June dates provided in this program are inconsistent, let alone incorrect, because the dates don't match with the respective days of the week. (examples: June 8, 2001 really falls on a Friday; June 9, 2001 really falls on a Saturday [the narrator mentions it falling on a Friday @ 12:24]; also note the narrator saying "May 11" @ 17:39 whereas earlier he mentioned June)?
That we can agree on.

Challenger 3985 at the time was the largest operating steam locomotive in the world.
And as far as the largest steam locomotive in the world, the Erie triplexes were bigger, but were not successful.
