- Matte Assist ML is a new tool in Silhouette 2024 that can automatically generate animated mattes from a single frame. It's ideal for situations where creating sub-pixel-perfect rotoscoping isn't necessary, such as garbage masks and fast composites. Join Ben Brownlee as he walks you through creating a fully animated matte from a single frame.

I can't wait to start using this tool! I love that I can use it as an OFX right inside of Flame rather than having to go to an outboard program, or even worse, send my footage to "the cloud" in order to get a quick roto for temp comps or a base layer.
That's impressive...
And i like the fact that they called what it really is.... ML
Awesome release!
So glad to finally be able to talk about this now!
WOW, this is incredible! Absolutely mind blowing, I hate roto and this makes a HUGE difference!
This is extraordinary. I have never used Silhouette and I'm pretty rubbish at roto. Looks like problem solved!
I just roughly tested this on my machine and it's amazing. my question is: does the ML create a tracking data that you could maybe attach a roto to? cause the shapes are not that perfect which you made clear, so If it's not perfect, I'd love to parent a shape to the data the ML created, is there anything of that sort please?
Not currently. This is a great feature request, which I will pass on to the Dev team.
The Optical Flow ML A node can produce this type of tracking data. I'll add that to our future l tutorials list.
I still have the same problem with MATTE ASSIST ML. It does not work. Everything is connected as shown in all the videos but when I hit PLAY nothing happens. The matte layer stays on a single frame. It does NOT work at all. I have the latest update and nothing. It does not work.
When using the ml assist with ezmask (ezmask is working correctly if i paint all green what i need and red vise versa) on objects, it gives me good results for the edges, but i get big holes in the matte afterwards. I tried matte repair, but i can't fill the holes with it.... How i could fix it, because the result is really good, but ml assist still puts holes where ezmask is clean... Thank you!
What you'll want to do here is to add in another frame of EZMask somewhere else in the clip. This may help Matte Assist ML understand what you're trying to key.
The other thing to do is to combine this with some traditional roto or paint tools to create your final matte. Matte Assist ML isn't always perfect (yet!) but it should help you do things faster. Hope that helps.
Hi Ben, I followed your suggest but when I finished to paint red and green for bg and fg nothing happened. I can just see the mask if I switch on trimap. I think it's little different from that you see when you finish to paint. After, I used the Matte Assist ML with keyframe and Input alpha and I started play but I see on my timeline just the first keyframe I created when I painted.
Do you think i have to open a ticket or probably i making somethings wrong. Second and last quest. :) Can I use Matte Assist ML with a normal Roto node? Thank you so much! You are always amazing!
In EZMask, when you're finished painting, make sure the Viewer is set to Output, and you'll see the calculated result then. Press "A" twice to preview the alpha channel.
If you're only seeing the first keyframe you painted in Matte Assist ML, it means the matte isn't being calculated. Did you connect the yellow data port from EZMask into Matte Assist ML?
To answer your final question, yes, you can use a normal roto node too. Change the Matte Assist ML Mask Source to Roto and remember to pipe in the yellow data port too.

@@BorisFXco wow! I knew 1 second you resolved my problem! Thank you so much!!! It was i didn't switch to the alpha channel. But when I pressed twice time A all things started to rum to exactly way.
@@BorisFXcoI followed all the steps but the Mate assist does not work. It just doesn't calculate the frames. It doesn't work neither with rotoscoping nor with the EZMASK.
I have the same problem. When using the “Matte assist” it does nothing. It doesn't do any trackin or anything.
I'm stopped in the EZ Mask step, i already selected the foreground and background, i'm in output mode but nothing happen. Apparently nothing changes between Output and Input mode. I would love some help!
Press "A" twice to preview the alpha channel. Does that help?
@@BorisFXco Was exactly that, thank you!
Hi! Selecting matte assist ML and pressing play, tracking does not occur. What can you suggest? Thank you!
Check your node parameter settings first. Have you set up the correct reference frame or piped in a data input?
If you're still having problems please contact Support and they will be happy to help : borisfx.com/support/open-a-case/
@@BorisFXco My settings in Matte Assist ML: Mask Source - Input Alpha, Reference Frames - Keyframes (data port). Do I need to change anything else in the settings? Thank you very much for responding.
And the yellow data output is connected from EZMask into Matte Assist ML?
Best to open a Support ticket, as it is easier to help there than through CZcams comments
same thing happen with me nothing is tracking
Please contact Support as well then @AusafAli-mg6so
Hi, I have a question. How to export the shape into after effects?
If you want to deal with a rendered matte, in the Output node simply render out the alpha. If you want to deal with it live as a plugin, then make sure that the tree ends in an Output node. Then in After Effects, set the Silhouette plugin to render Composite, and you'll have your alpha rendered there.
Does EZMask work in Demo version? I defined FG and BG using Green and Red pens. But after that nothing happen....
Press "A" twice to preview the alpha channel. Does that help?

Can you guys add this to mocha integrated making it eazier to use from your editing software?
Thanks for the feature request. I'll pass it on to the team. Just so you know, Silhouette is available as a plugin for Adobe & OFX already. Might be worth checking out.
Hey ben i follow the step you mention for Matte Assist ML but nothing happen
Did you connect up the data port from EZMask or Roto into the Matte Assist ML? Or if you are using a different way to feed in the original alpha, remember to setup the Reference frame in the Matte Assist ML node correctly. Without knowing where the initial alpha is, Matte Assist ML won't give you the correct result.
Also, did you check out the alpha channel by pressing "A" twice?

It does not work
Not working
Which bit? Please can you clarify.
Hi Ben,
I tried silhouette 2024. Its new AI tools EZ Matte, Matte Assist ML are pretty much helpful.
I observed that the Matte Assist ML tool is extracting 80% matte even if another object comes over the assisted matte. Also it is auto subtracting that overlayed object and its an amazing tool.
I would like to share some of my view here,
-It would be great if Matte assist ML get control parameter for edge refinement or adjustmnet.
-can we extract tracker points from Matte assist ML?
-can we get Roto poly shapes with mattes?
-B-spline to Bezier conversion tool is available. Is the any way to revert the same poly from Bezier to B-spline?
Hi! Thanks so much for the great feedback. Let me respond below.
- Yes, that's a great suggestion
- Not from Matte Assist ML. You can from Optical Flow ML though. Pipe Optical Flow ML into a Roto node and use the flow tracker to track your shape(s). Then go back into the Point tracker and you can convert any of your shape points into point trackers. It sounds more complicated than it is!
- Not yet.
- Another good suggestion. I will pass all these on to the dev team.
@@BorisFXco Thank you Team, for your suggestions, will certainly utilize them.
Below are some queries, that I have observed in my testing phase.
Once we get final matte from Matte assist ML tool, can we also get tool for matte edges refinement, as I can see Flickering and BG Pulling issue. So, if can have a (Add or Subtract) tool (EZ matt tool) like clean BG, Clean FG, Matte sponge, that can be used for further refinement, to achieve best quality output.
You can currently pipe the output into other nodes, and I would recommend that. Like other procedural techniques, these often work best when combined with other nodes. Use an Alpha Composite node to bring all these elements together.
I like your additional tools idea.
@@BorisFXco I've noticed that when I try to open a plate with multiple channels, the viewer isn't displaying the rgba channel but instead showing additional channels. Can you provide guidance on how to resolve this issue?
