  • 'This Week in Africa,' is a collaborative effort between Authentic African and African Stream, where we break down the week's breaking news and its impact on Pan-Africanism and Africa's independence.
Today we discuss the historic moment when music legend Stevie Wonder was granted Ghanaian citizenship. In a ceremony held at the presidential palace in Accra, President Nana Akufo-Addo presented Wonder with a citizenship certificate and passport, marking his 74th birthday. Recognized not only for his musical talents but also for his impactful humanitarian efforts, Wonder's citizenship symbolizes the enduring connection between the African diaspora and the continent.
This event underscores Ghana's commitment to embracing diaspora-born Africans, with 252 individuals from the United States and the Caribbean granted citizenship since 2019 as part of the 'Year of Return' initiative.
Stay tuned as @Authentic_African CEO @JoeHotagua and as @African_Stream Journalist, Inem Richardson delve into the significance of this moment and its implications for the Pan-African community worldwide.

He is 74 years old. What's the big deal. The discussion should be why the black diaspora and descendents of the people who were enslaved have such a hard time getting citizenship or residency in Africa, especially West africa. How does 800 thousand Indians and about 100 thousand Arabs plus about 30 thousand Chinese live in Nigeria, and a few black people from the diaspora face a lot of problems gaining residency. This is the important discussion black people need to have.

The reason why the diaspora does not get citizenship is because they think they will show up and Get it. it took him years is going back and forth, and doing business.

I suspect that people on return will be treated better than they were in their former home. Also their money will likely go further.
