Train to New Street Tram from Grand Central to Wolverhampton Station or Train to Coseley/West Bromwich Bus to Wolverhampton Bus Station walk to the Train Station
I'm glad you talked about Pipers Row, as that intermediate station is technically more important that Wolverhampton Station, as it gives (as you noticed) genuine Bus/Tram interchange. My only quibble with the extension is that Wolverhampton Station Station (shades of Battersea Power Station...) doesn't feel "connected" to the Railway Station: yes, there is signage, but the platform doesn't look like it's part of the whole - maybe if they'd put an awning above the pavement between the two, so the connection was under cover, it would feel more integrated. Still, really glad it's finally open, will ride it in the week.
I always assumed it would be integrated into the station, I swear there's room before platform 5 starts or taking over platform 6 which I've seen a train use once
@konadesu It would have been quite easy to create a more "integrated" feel to the station, I think TfWM and Network Rail should have worked more closely. Platform 5 - the space is actually more limited than you think, plus there would be safety issues with trains & trams on the same track. Platform 6 - reasonable. However, the curve to get off the road may be beyond even the capability of a tram.
I was referred expecting the tram stop serving Wolverhampton Station to be, like, actually inside the station, or st least have a covered walkway to it. Instead, we have a bus stop !
"It did somehow take 6 years to build 2 tram stops,i don't know how it happened" *meanwhile in my city* : 11 years to build 2 stations on the metro and still counting
Great Video! I Used To Live In Wolverhampton And The Tram Network Was So Good, I'm So Happy That They've Finally Opened Pipers Row And Wolverhampton Station
Nice to see the West Midlands Metro tram extended to Wolverhampton railway station. West Midlands Trains should start introducing the new Class 730 Aventras hopefully before the end of this year. Also I do think that the tram system should extend to Dudley and Merry Hill shopping centre and to Birmingham International Airport and NEC.
At this rate The Tram will kill the Bus off as someone who caught the 79 which basically shadows the Tram after it picks me up when it was broken the 79 which was Double Decker got absolutely rammed
Well done Nick. Saw you at Wolverhampton station. I didn't get chance to upload my contribution until I got home to Blackpool this afternoon but it will be up by 4pm. Loved watching your version. Hopefully bump into you when they, FINALLY, open North Pier to Blackpool North railway station, supposedly Easter 2024 but it has now definitely beaten Wolverhampton in the time it takes to lay, and then operate, a few hundred metres of track. Michael
I cam here after seeing Jen's video. You should have mentioned the old Wolverhampton station building that was converted into the Bus ticket hall and that Pipers Row is infamous for the car park that collapsed. Fortunately this collapse happened in the early hours of Monday otherwise it would have killed lots of people. The reason for collapse was the corroded support struts the same reason that caused the collapse of the Surfside Florida condo. My Great Grandfather was landlord of the pub there as well.
I think you need to show case the whole line, showing it’s expansion at either end and the off wire bit it does around Birmingham Town Hall. Great video and well done on the early start.
No, because the tram is managed by Transport for West Midlands which is a private company, not managed by the council. The only reason why they are associated with the council is because they work with the council to help cater the needs of the community
1:31 "Some of us are committed and got on from the start of the tram" … I resemble this comment :p I just happened to be making provisional hotel plans so that I can be in the right place to do this when HBL opens. Jen reminds me too much of me… I really should subscribe to her channel too.
@@InkItOut It's currently uncertain whether it will clash with one of my upcoming dentist visits (apparently replacing a broken tooth takes a lot of visits… I'm currently being paranoid when I post videos, wondering whether the gap is too obvious). Everything I've seen so far says we don't know when the Westbound side of HBL will open. If they open on the same day, I am going to get the first train in, and then do a pointless journey starting with the first train out, before heading home. This is certain. If it's only the Eastbound (Northern) side, I'm undecided whether it takes priority over other life events. Might happen, might not. In that case, the plan will be the first train in (from MCV I believe), the first train out, and stick with that until the end of the line, before an experiment to find the route home from there including the minimum possible number of minutes on Northern.
If memory serves, the service pattern will become a 2/1 split between Station and St.Georges - and then there's the Merry Hill and Digbeth Extensions to consider later.
I am today years old in realising that handgrips on trams and presumably buses and trains can be swung upwards 180 degrees so they're out of the way...
The West Midlands have a really poor record of opening new infrastructure in a timely manner. J10 of the M6 is approaching 18 months late and the less said about the Oldbury Viaduct the better
When I went to my first Albion Game in 2019 I walked across the M5 over the J1 Bridge and you could see the contraflow yet to be prepared. J10 is still being worked on it is done but the Roads need resurfacing/widening notably Wolverhampton Road and The Black Country Route which is having 3 lanes added J10 bound. Last time I went on the 529 that way it was still being done There doing all the work overnight so it slows it down
nah, its just British efficiency. Look at Japan, Singapore etc. they'll have built a whole rail network in that time. Covid or not, the UK just don't have workers that want to work.
So, yeah... I have noticed that, yeah, you don't spend a lot of time, yeah, looking at the camera, yeah. You like to look away, yeah, and then look back at the camera, yeah, and then look away, yeah, rather than talking directly to your audience, yeah! Oh...and you say 'yeah;... a lot! Yeah!

Half expected to see more transport CZcamsrs, seeing as they all seem to know each other…but Jen was a given.

This sounds like a Toronto or Ottawa issue
I live nowhere near those cities :p
judging by your youtube channel is it Milan by any chance haha
Indeed it is,unfortunately or fortunately
Hey… THATS A TRAM
the extension looks great and its awesome to now have a connection to trains & buses at Wolvehampton brilliant video
Now That's Good We've Got A Extension To The Tram Network 👍

Brilliant video on the West Midlands metro extension to Wolverhampton station Nick, it's nice to see that it's finally open. :)
Great video.
Never seen these trams, is it really uncool to say lovely colour 😊
Thanks for again for interesting & informative contents.
Trust me, everything in Wolverhampton takes forever. Like the Civic Hall redevelopment that took far too long and cost far too much!
Excellent video Nick 👍
Getting up at 5AM to film this, that is what I call dedication
1:15 Jen points at Nick making a pointless journey 😂
Great vlog Nick. It’s great to see the West Midlands Metro tram extension to Wolverhampton Station now open.
The next extension to Dudley will be exciting added some serious kms to the network. Finger crossed its on track to open next year still.
I wasn't expecting to see Jen there - she's usually paddling about in the Thames mud with Nicola White and co!

Aye! It's Jen! Yay! Love those trams too!
Amazing video! I have been waiting for this extension, and I think this will be practical for users and enthusiasts alike!
Nice to see your take on this new extension!! At least it wasn't too early a start, unlike most other new stations!!!

Looks good.
So, it not actually an extension beyond St. George’s then. By the sound of it it it branches off before the original terminus.
I live in Wolverhampton and it is grat to see somebody admire us
Great Video Nick, Also was a smart idea how you visited the tram stops first before the journey.
I’ll be taking the trams there the soonest I arrive in the UK
This is great 👍

I saw you on the tram
I hope you had a good time In West Midlands
Will Birmingham council being bankrupt affect when the tram stop comes back into service?
No, because the tram is managed by Transport for West Midlands which is a private company, not managed by the council. The only reason why they are associated with the council is because they work with the council to help cater the needs of the community
Plus being Wolverhampton, it's Wolverhampton Council, which AFAIK isn't bankrupt.
As I was filming as well
Wolverhampton station is where i go
Great video Nick and was great too meet you. 👍
Nick, you were like 2 miles away from my house in Dudley
Birmingham Council wasted a ton of money on this tram.
Ok finally it goes to Wolverhampton
It's been at Wolverhampton since 1999 at the original terminal stop St George's, but now closed for refurbishment
J university Challenge or was it only connect?
Six years for two tram stops? Are you not familiar with the concept of people from the Black Country taking their time? 😂😂😂
OMG FINALLY I WAS DYING TO CHECK IT
6 years for two tram stops is about typical for the United Kingdom of Nimby.
So... You got a new platform for every 2 years of construction? Wow, that was slow.
@1:18 - I'm guessing this bloke isn't a Rishi Sunak fan
Its gonna take another 12 years To do the fully west midlands or like 16 years
