- There are plenty of fantastic video essays on CZcams revisiting Batman Arkham Asylum, and they all offer so much value to the game and give insight into just how well thought out the whole game was. That Boy Aqua, Whitelight, and always nerdy are just some of the few channels that give context to why this game was so great when it was released in 2009. Rocksteady did a fantastic job translating the character into a video game, and they introduced so many rich and brilliant features to the point where the game has forever influenced action-adventure games, even today. Since the game is so well put together, I’d love to explore how the game was made. What other games inspire Asylum? How were certain features developed? And what kind of evolution did the character designs go through before their final iterations? This is The Early Development of Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Theres some things I need to address
Just so everyone knows, the 2007 build suits are not entirely accurate. For context, it’s a mod that restores textures from the pre alpha and applies it to the pre-existing batman model. So the model isn’t entirely accurate but the textures including the logo are. Of course, the makers of the mod couldn’t entirely recreate the original model since that would simply be too difficult. Referring to the armoured suit, 1. The logo on the suit is based on the pre-alpha logo. Im assuming the mod creator wanted to see how it would look like on the suit, which is what it would’ve looked like if the logo wasn’t changed in the end. 2. I’m not entirely sure if you could where it in the actual story mode originally. Maybe you could, since the art it was based on seems to imply batman was supposed to add it on top of his pre-existing outfit.

A small note, the Dark Knight game did release in the most technical way possible, because it only released on Java flip phones by Glu. At least, I assume the two projects were intended to be ports of one another, similar to the Begins game.
I would’ve LOVED a Gotham by gaslight game. The comic was absolutely sick, and it’s a shame that it was never made. At least we got asylum.

I mean, maybe. But that kind of game is so niche that I don't know how you could expect sales of that beyond a very small, dedicated group of people. Asylum is exactly what needed to be made. Lots of villains, Batman acts the way you expect, no big setting gimmicks. No weird elseworlds context needed.
I wanted to make a fan game based on it but you know how WB is with their love letters to say "knock it off, kid.".
To be honest, the early Joker design’s face really reminds me of the Joker’s face in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth, which probably was the intentions, considering that both have a somewhat similar premise.

The Joker was actually based on Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, while the Dark Knight himself was based on Jim Lee's Batman
@@michael-aarongenisys I don't believe you. That concept art looks nothing like Killing Joke, but a LOT like Serious House on a Serious Earth. The only way what you're saying is true would be if the devs got the two comics mixed up.

Arkham Asylum is my favorite in the series and has remained that since 2009 when I first played it. After re-beating all these games again recently it still continues to hold true. I love all the Arkham games but it’s something about Asylum that just does it for me. Good vid.

The cuts really do make the film/game. I also like how even though that joker design is brutal, the one they stuck with is more flexible, to the point where even in Arkham Knight, he almost seems like your friends and you believe it. He can be sinister, mean looking, or look like a goofy friendly clown. It's simplicity is just a perfect blend. And sadly it's even more believable, but I REALLY love that glassglow joker look.

They’re so concerned with rising development costs and want to recoup that money quickly.
All of the lore and love pushed into this game made it stick out and last. Basically what the Avengers probably lacked, and what Spider-Man continues to add on to with it’s continuations. For Kevin’s memory, we need more Arkham Batman.

Man, I wish the remastered version of Arkham asylum kept the original cinematics. They looked so good. If I could change just 2 things it would be that and Batman’s weird face in the first game. Aside from that, both remasters are pretty much perfect(to me anyway).
Agreed. What’s weird is Batman’s face is reverted to the original (and it’s remastered) when you select the armored batsuit.
The Arkham remasters are offensively bad. They took Joker and turned him into a neon glow stick.
The build section is a mod for the game, they changed the logo of the armoured suit you get for completing the game
I know the suit itself is just the armoured suit as mentioned in the video, but the logo and textures of the other images is primarily based on the original textures from the pre-alpha. This includes the logo which although, was touched up by whoever made the mod, is still an accurate representation of how it may have looked like if it was completed. Of course, its not entirely accurate since it’s missing the cape, and overall torso design is different but obviously they can’t fully recreate the original alpha suit. I think they must have tried to get as close to it as possible using suits already in the game which is why I still included it.
Also, I don’t think anyone will doubt that the armoured suit is based on the art I mentioned judging from how close it looks to it.

Thank you. Im assuming you’re referring to the art by Carlos D'Anda? A lot of his Art usually look completely different from the final designs in the actual game but some of his art also look really similar (with some differences). His batsuit art looks similar to the final suit yeah, however, the art I compared the armoured suit to have some notable differences. He could have just been illustrating the armoured suit as a suit purely for the challenge maps but honestly its hard to know for sure 🤔We’d have to ask him ourselves.
The concept ideas for arkham asylum could've truly redefined everything the game has a remarkable legacy and made the super hero genre for gaming but the concept ideas such as the scarecrow approach and the garden seems so cool
The Asylum Lighthouse design seems to be repurposed for Arkham City Wonder Tower, i remember similar structures and designs while climbing up to reach Strange.
dude a remake for this game with all the cut concepts due to time constraints would be awesome! i could totally see it. if paul dini came back too and tweaked the story slightly it could still work.

I learned a lot of new stuff about my favorite Arkham game, and it was fascinating (that first Batman and Joker design are something else, I woulda loved to have seen them at least as alternate costumes or something). Arkham Asylum had the best environment, so much love, Easter eggs and detail in every corner! Absolutely LOVED exploring every nook of the Asylum collecting all the Riddler trophies, solving the riddles and the Wardens secrets.

As a guy who played the hell out of this game on Xbox 360 even in hard mode multiple times, I didn't know anything about the unused concept of the game. So it's good to watch this amazing video and know all of this stuff I never knew before.
The concept I loved here the most is the Joker design for how horrifying and scary he looks. And I think that's how he should've looked in suicide squad (2016) instead of some cringey tiktok gangster who looks stupid with tattoos. But I prefer the design we got in the game instead. Same with Batman. With Bane though, I actually prefer the concept design over what we got instead.
When it comes to batmobile, I knew it was supposed to be drivable in the game as the model itself is in the game. But I think it would've been just used as a driving vehicle to go to a specific place. Instead of a non transferable version of Transformers War for Cybertron tank battle machine for like 60% of Arkham Knight.
And the funny thing about the counter lightning bolt indicator in the combat system is that despite the devs added this much later as the combat was hard for them to counter enemies, they didn't put it on hard difficulty. You have no idea how frustrated it was when I played the game on hard for the first time 😂 But it was so fun nonetheless.
Overall, I'm so glad what we got in the game when it comes to designs, story, atmosphere, combat and so on. And at the end, what we got is a masterpiece.
Anyways again, amazing video as usual from you, man 👍🏻 I'd really like you to do an unused concept video for Terminator 1 and 2 or Arkham City.

Fuck man, i feel like some of the original designs wouldve been so iconic today like the Bane, Harley Quinn, and Batman designs.
In the end they chose to be as accurate to the comics as possible but I wish they took some creative liberties with the looks.
If they do another Batman, they should follow through with their original vision for their designs, or maybe, they can make a Batman Beyond? Ahhh, im just hoping people do fanart on those og concept designs, especially Harley....
I just got the trilogy. Remastered for the PS4, and while not perfect, still it gets the job done. I've always been a gameplay over graphics guy, so it really doesn't bother me too much. I just finished it this morning and started my City play through. When I first got them, I played them in reverse. Nice to see things play out the way they're supposed to. It'll be my first time playing Knight. It's gonna be a good time for me. 😁

Hey, this was a fantastic video and I am surely subscribing after watching! But I wanted to ask if there's any way you can provide a clearer image for the Chapel Rock section of the map. I am very interested in the location, but I can't make out most of the locations because it's so blurry.
unfortunately that blurry image is the only one that exist on the internet and trust me, I tried to find a clearer image. Perhaps I missed it, but I’m assuming that the original artist must have deleted the image.
Again, maybe I missed it but I couldn’t for the life of me find a better quality image.

I think “ thrilling, stealth gameplay” is a bit of an overstatement. The one thing almost everyone can agree on, and hindsight is that the stealth in Arkham asylum is very limited in terms of options

@@WarpingFisti dont think so at all, i replay asylum for the atmosphere, nostalgia and knight for the gameplay, visuals and everything else, city just falls somewhere in the middle, its doesnt have the atmosphere of the asylum and it loses to arkham knight in almost every aspect

pretty sure Spider-Man 3 which came out in 2007 had the earlier detective vision. the spider sense in that game is very very similar to the detective vision of arkham games
