I was honestly expecting MatPat to rip the show to shreds like most other normies who hate Thomas, and turn off the video after a few seconds feeling upset, but he actually showed a surprising level of genuine love and respect for Thomas.

I'm surprised. I expected the regular "Sir Topham Hatt is an evil dictator. Henry dies in the tunnel" stuff but Matpat clearly shows a better understanding of Sodor. I'd love to see a theory on either the lore of the island, or maybe calculating how much each crash costs

I am fairly sure that season 5 onwards, the crashes weren’t pulled from real events. The crashes in the RWS? Yes they’re all mostly real, but the show, which he’s referring to? Much less so.
I mean, the dark part comes from the fact that the engines, cars, coaches etc are all alive/sentient, and crashes and shit happen on an almost daily basis, and he didn’t even mention scrap

That quote, Matpat’s lore about Thomas & Friends is really but heavily related in a reality way, by basically give it out related the U.S. Railroads is derails its transportation and the economy, this theory man deserves the annual reward. MatPat is a true legend of lore.
You have to understand that the trains were a metaphor for small children, just learning how to do things

I personally feel like Matpat's referring more to the HIT era personally (Season 7 was piled onto it in the US, so The Spotless Record would've been shown; the episode where a box van's killed)
Well you have to put into perspective that matpat was around 18 when season 7 came out, so saying he was referring to that is very unlikely. Him referring to something like the spiteful brakevan or scruffy fit more into the timeline perspective so.

The crashes are awesome. And they are mostly realistic (Yep, I know Thomas the jet engine, Rusty and the boulder, etc.)
I once said before that if MattPat didn’t do a film theory on TTTE before he retired I wouldn’t miss him.
The Sodor railway was a disaster that should have been shut down many times.
The number of incidents they had was borderline criminal.

Well he's the asshole, but the real villains, as was done very intentionally, were privatization, dieselization, and capitalism. Ironically, capitalism also would end up being rhe enemy of the franchise itself :/
This is legitimately a very valid critique, particularly of the later seasons. It is an issue that Rev. Wilbert Awdry himself had with the series later on, as it was very important to him, and for more-or-less for David Mitton as well, that they maintain proper railway conduct and procedure, even for the smallest of details. Unsuprisingly, the big companies who pushed the show to put their main focus on ensuring merchandise sales didn't have any of this passion, abd it shows. Even characters like Bill and Ben have this lighthearted characterization to accidents in season/series 3 though, so it wasn't like this wasn't an issue earlier on.

We need another influencer to combat that video. Definitely isn't fair at all to have the only video from someone outside of the fandom be someone to shit on us for views.
It would have also been good to infuse some actually decent theories about the show as opposed to “OMG, HENRY DIED” and “THE FAT CONTROLLER IS A DICTATOR” or “SODOR IS AN ALLEGORY FOR HELL” or some crap like that.

I remember there’s another GTLive clip where he talks about Thomas and he had a lot of nice things to say about Sir Topham Hatt. It’s sad he never got around to doing a Thomas theory because I think it would’ve been refreshing to hear a Thomas theory that isn’t a morbid explanation of how the trains are alive or bashing Sir Topham Hatt.

MatPat may not be on the Theorists channels anymore but I think it would be interesting to see a Film Theory on Thomas & Friends if & only if there's actual research put into it, like contacting Awdry Lore people, forming something that isn't just "Fat Controller might be evil, or trains are possibly evil" but actually like "Oh hey maybe there's something to be said about the safety record and who actually is a problem on Sodor".

@@smt64productions40yes, it’s based on the fact that in the episode “The Flying Kipper”, Henry has a bad crash and gets sent to Crew to be rebuilt, the theory is that the Henry that comes back isn’t the same Henry because he was rebuilt from one model of locomotive to a completely different model

I had wanted to make a theory video on whether or not the railways of Sodor are privatized, and I stopped because I wasn't sure that having a flag meant that it's separate from the UK or not and what flags in general mean, but Mat's idea seems like more fun and I wish he could have made it.

the problem with mat pats theory is that he doesn't realize the episodes show the engines learning a lesson. You realize that the engines in the show arent perfect and they screw up like how us humans can. I think the only bad thing about it is the engines dont relize most of the time that how big it can cause if the screw up or prank people and etc.
Why did he not make a full video about this?
I think the issue is, he’s always been into a dark truth so much that he’s starting to give the other stuff less attention. Like just read the railway series or read the other books on it there’s plenty to talk about. (Edit) Not to mention those oodles and oodles and oodles of fan content out there just waiting to be torn apart for lore.

Something tells me it would be too hard to dissect the show. Thomas has a lot of lore behind it, but the sentience isn’t really explained. I think it has something to with the train being built giving it sentience. Also the authoritarian world makes sense since real railways were dependent on punctuality an d efficient transit.
