AEA R88: If You had One Mic To Record your Entire BAND! Oh man...

  • You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands. I want to show that you can use ONE MIC to record your whole band. And it will sound INCREDIBLE One Mic. A Stereo Ribbon dream of a microphone. This one is one of my favorites. We use it to recording Drums, Picking up the kick and the snare independently, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, and vocals.
    I couldn't believe the versatility this mic has. Yes is it "technically" two mics... but it is purchased as one mic. Therefore it fits our criteria. Most budget interfaces come with two channels so you would be able to incorporate this easily. Even if your interface doesn't have the gain needed, you can add a cloud lifter of something similar for some free headroom and little peace of mind that you wont accidentally turn on phantom power and fry your expensive, fragile, microphone.

    I am the engineer who designed the original R88 with Wes Dooley at AEA back in 2004.
    You are using the mic in ways we never expected (or tried) and I am stoked to see and hear the results.
    Keep up the good work.

      Matt I recently had the chance to record a jazz demo on bass clarinet with this gorgeous device. Thank you, it’s such a pleasure to mix! I’ve always used harmonic enhancers to get more from the horn, today I’m only using that plugin for the other instruments that didn’t have the benefit of this mic.

      @@RecordingStudioLoser Ah, really? Well, I guess It would be easy to assume from the product names that the R's would be closest relatives. On the AEA's product overview page both are mentioned, and R84 erroneously i believe when they are should be comparing R88A (active) and R88. On the spec page they tell that the N8 is the mono version..

I dunno, I don't wanna say "nothing special" but it is not like super fancy for like a professional Video Editor or something (which I am not at all!!!) BUT it is... Applied with a lot of love?! I am not a native Speaker so I don't really know how to put it in English but you can tell that in all your videos you apply the editing with a lot of thought and love, like another instrument, so to speak. And just like with music, I don't care about what style of music it is as long as you can feel that who is playing it is doing so with passion, that's the kind of vibe I'm getting from your videos. Came over here from Ryan. Dude your channel is gonna explode. Production value is top notch. What are you shooting on? Kind of looked like a Panasonic S1? Anyway keep it up!

    That sounded incredible. Maybe I missed it, but which preamps did you go through for this? I also came from CSL, and I've been working my way through your old videos. Thanks for the great content bro.

      We started with Focusrite ISA preamps. Then When I say I want to switch in the video. I went to some 1073s to ha e some onboard EQ. This could be done in the box as well.

    You literally could buy a Behringer Umc 1820. 2 road nt1-A’s a beta 52 and 4 Sm 57’s for the price of this 1 microphone. And have change left for some outboard gear

    The snare sounds sooooo modern. I can't wait for this trend to wear out so we can tune higher again. Also I would prefer electric guitar over acoustic for that staccato rhythm. Also a "modern" production choice. Am I just "old school" or does that really sound better? Good song, though, could compete with the rest on the charts no sweat.

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  Před 3 lety

      That’s interesting. That modern snare sound is mostly used in pop from samples built from old school 70s sounds. I happen to be using one of those vintage 70s snares. I think modern I think higher tuned. But hey genres are all different.
      Either way. Do you. Tune high.

      @@RecordingStudioLoser I tune đuvh higher, yes. It is not just the snare, but if you loosen the head that much that it doesn't resonate at all and then compress it, it will sound modern. At least that's what I am hearing. "Modern" IS vintage, everyone is using Supraphonics from the 70's, I know I do.
