- An Intimate Talk with Mary Tyler Moore
Shocked and saddened to hear Mary Tyler Moore is no longer with us. When I was fourteen, I had the pleasure of meeting her. When I expressed my passion for filmmaking, she invited me to spend a day with her on set of a film she was working on. It was an incredible experience but she went out of her way to make it extraordinary - giving me her chair to sit in, introducing me to the cast, even convincing the director to include me as an extra. A few months later, she invited me to an ADR session for the same film. Over the years, she continued to show her support, attending various screenings of my first films, always with a smile. The last time we talked was in my sophomore year of college. She let me interview her on camera about her life. We talked for nearly an hour. It was an honor to know her and I can say with absolute certainty that she really did turn the world on with her smile.
This is my interview with Mary.

I am so grateful to have stumbled across this. What a treasure. After Betty White passed away, I realized that every major cast member of the Mary Tyler Moore show was gone, and just felt so wistful - so saddened and filled with nostalgia that I started searching for anything related to Mary Tyler Moore - it was really her incredible charisma on the show that drew me in, and always brightened my spirit.

I never cried over a celebrity dying.....except Mary Tyler Moore...as if she was a relative....i totally loved her work..she brought a quality to the screen that has never before or since been duplicated...I still tear up over her passing over a year later..
Alyssa Leclair, I am the same. I bawled a lot as it was like losing a dear family member. And I still weep thinking of our loss.
God I loved her - she is golden - no replacements for MTM. Classic, generous, and real. RIP Mary.
How could anyone not love Mary? Intelligent, articulate, talented, and an amazing body of work. Miss her.
I do not recall feeling this bad when Elizabeth Montgomery died. And I loved Bewitched. There was something about Mary that just touched us with her endearing characters and presence.
AND she was a phenomenal actress. Really something seeing her in action. No acting lessons or training to my knowledge. Innate talent.
I know what you mean, but i would also say that the writing for DVD and MTM was a lot more pithy and insightful, serious as well as campy. Bewitched was a lot more fluff.
Bewitched was not reflective of reality. Samantha was not either. but she was a beauty and a very good actress.

Brooke Hanley - who says for something to be good it has to be a reflection of reality? Ever watch The Wizard of Oz ? (or thousands of movies and TV shows I can name). I loved both of them. Bewitched was a part of my childhood.

Mary Tyler Moore is that kind of person that's hard to find, & hard to meet. Too many Movie Stars arent friendly like Mary was. So you was blessed by God above.
I hope one day I can get lucky enough in Sitcomes & Movies. I'm 62 yrs old now, & the yrs😢they just go by way too fast.
And the memories linger on, some good, some sad, & the sounds of laughter without photo's sometimes are all some of us have.
I hope to someday get as lucky as you & have someone ask me to be in movies, Ive always loved Movies & I wasn't ever seeking attention, I just honestly wanted to be a Movie Star in Movies.

Before my employment in the entertainment industry, I was front office supervisor at the Waldorf, where Ms. Moore kept an apartment in the hotel's towers. She was everything gracious and kind. I sent her flowers on the occasion of her being nominated for Ordinary People and she wrote me back a most beautiful letter. I've seen so many interviews of Ms. Moore over the years, this one is a true favorite. Well-done. Mary Tyler Moore--sorely missed.
Mary Tyler Moore seemed like a sweet, humble person.
She was sweet and humble, indeed.
She makes admissions in this interview that she does in no other. I think the long form of the interview and the lack of an audience made her more comfortable and unguarded (that brilliant smile was her armor--note when she flashes it). She was a complex person who lived a hell of a life in eighty years. She succeeded as an actress and the co-head of the studio which bore her name--and, for a time, MTM Productions was the most powerful entity in American television. Eventually, I believed she succeeded as a person too, which makes me happy. I think she overcame all of her hardships in time and I admire her greatly for it. I have gut a feeling that she just wanted more time to do it all, and I selfishly wish she had that time as well.
Seeing her leave here at only 80, was saddening. I truly thought she had more time. She died long before several of her costars, which was even more surprising.
I just hate she died . I miss her and a wonderful talented woman. God rest her soul.
Mary was so attractive inside and out-she just had something magnetic i can't really describe
I have loved and admired MTM for 40 plus years. I first saw Mary Tyler Moore show in 1970 when I came the U.S. Then I saw all reruns of the Dick Van Dyke show. There is no one like her. May her soul be making comedy in heaven.

Just visited the Mary Tyler Moore statue in downtown Minneapolis 2 weeks ago. Told my wife to please shoot the photo quickly, and fortunately was wearing my sunglasses, because it was quite emotional. I loved Mary and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I was 13 in 1973 when I discovered it. The statue is back at the intersection where the iconic scene of Mary's hat toss occurred in the opening credits.
Her sweetness, kindness, and compassion are enough to admire her forever let alone her massive talent as an artist.
The way she answers your questions with such a warmth. Both of you done a good job.
I'm only into this thing 9 minutes, but this is my favorite MTM interview ever. I see I am smiling. Mary is so thoughtful, well spoken and measured in responding to questions. Giving the interviewer a lot and then stopping politely to wait for the next one. A+
Is it just the mood I'm in, or is this absolutely wonderful? You really see the spirit of the person, Mary. By the end I'm even taken by the earnest young film maker as well... Enriching. I am glowing.

She charmed the pants off of the interviewer, can hear him laugh uncontrollably . She gives a warm , relaxed interview - she's honest , self deprecating , and sweet . The interviewer provided the atmosphere by listening and not rushing her . Beautiful moment getting to see what makes Mary so lovable . A true Lady ! Elvis knew this. Of her and that's why he didn't hit on her . She commands respect !
Oh I'm sure Elvis probably gave it a little shot. But how could he help but have to respect Mary Tyler Moore herself- in a nuns habit, no less! 🤣 The King met his match with Mary! She was even more charming and even more in control that he was, in her way. She had untouchable integrity.
It could be that Mary was married. She was still married to Grant Tinker when she filmed "A Change of Habit". I don't think the other leading ladies he slept with, from those films, were married. I could be wrong about that them.
I love Mary mentioned the woman (Hazel) in the background of the opening credits of the Mary Tyler Moore show. Ever since I was a kid I always thought, "why is that woman angry at Mary?"
LOL, Now you know. I always thought she was thinking, 'These darn out-of-towners, running into the middle of the road.'
What a fantastic interview. I absolutely adore MTM and watching this interview it's easy to see why. She was an incredibly funny actress in both the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show, but when I first saw her in Ordinary People I was shocked at how amazing she was as a dramatic actor. She was stunningly good and every time I see that film I get chills. I love hearing her talk about her career and life, she is so interesting and has such a great, sparkling personality and she's so funny. She is a national treasure and the world sure could use more Mary Tyler Moores in it.
You can tell that she liked and trusted you, Carlos. I've seen her in many interviews, but this is one that I think shows Mary at her best.
What a fantastic actress and fine human being.
If only she knew the impact she would have on so many of us. I am in the film business today because of her and shows like hers growing up . I always wanted to know how it’ was made and today I work on set and she is right! You have to really want it because it is a tuff business.
PS , I lost my baby brother to an accident the same year we lost her and it’s hard to take that loss and really makes you realize how short our lives are.

When certain big stars leave us it's almost like we've lost a member of our own family. In Mary's case this is doubly true because, as we see in this wonderful interview, she is so modest and self-effacing. Never was there a more gracious, talented and wonderful person as Mary Tyler Moore. I wish I'd come to know her. I'm sure, like most men, I'd immediately have fallen in love with her. I miss her now, every day, not being able to feel that warm. lovely presence in my life, Thank you for sharing this candid interview.
If you had come to have known her , you would have learned that even Mary was affected by the Hollywood weirdness .
She was obsessed with preserving her persona , she was immodest , and she was a pseudo-philanthropist . Wake up blue-check chump .
@@miles6593 after someone passes knocking a person for saying Mary was so open and wished to have met her in person is trashy. Her soul learned many lessons and she defineteley became a deeper person. She shared all of her deepest thoughts in her book After All . We all came cold unknowingly stop knocking others who are positive . Okay Honey from a man who was ina business modeling at 50 because someone noticed me and gave me an offer .and because of this met many performers. Most were cordial but many were focusing on the acting that would appear cold . You must have irritated her with your agenda and not considering the room .

I’ve watched this many times and each time I’m touched by her warmth and vocabulary which succinctly describes exactly what she is trying to communicate . She comes across in both her content and feeling . I love her answer to what advice would you give to an aspiring actor fir a career that may or may not happen- “ don’t do that - say that it might not happen “ be prepared . That is her core belief that tied to her earlier answer about really wanting stardom when she was young

I remember when I saw her in Ordinary People, I was overwhelmed at her brilliant and stark performance, not to mention that her character was such a dramatic contrast to Mary Richards. Very talented lady, I miss her.

In my opinion, what makes this such an effective interview is not so much about the questions that were asked, but rather about the manner in which the interview was conducted. Unlike Larry King, Barbara Walters, or another typical celebrity interviewer, Mr. Ferrer never for a minute lets himself become the focus of the interview; Mary always remains the focus, and she’s intelligent, articulate, and poised enough without being too full of herself so that she never disappoints us in any way. P.S.: By the way, Mary’s recollection beginning at 32:55 of the job interview scene in the first episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show is imperfect; if you don’t believe me, go back and look at that part of the episode for yourself.
I just watched this interview it was very good. First thing my mom's name is Mary and our last name is Moore I told my mom years ago I thought it was so cool that her and Mary has the same name. I always watched MTM every Saturday night and never missed it. The last show was so touching especially when they all hug and Mary looked one more time before closing the newsroom door. Later when I saw Ordinary People I could not believe what a fantastic movie it is the acting is excellent I am still blown away she deserves that golden globe award. So I just want to say I wish I could have met her and tell her how wonderful she is R.I.P Mary we will always love you forever. Thank for posting.

Thank you , I did a Public Service Announcement with her in the early 2000's , she was so kind and funny to me! Our family just adored her! It was great shooting the commercials for 2 days ! A memory our family will never ever forget !

Mary makes me want to put my best self out there, not for my ego but for my heart. Doing so honors myself and it shows God that the only thing that truly feeds my heart is love.
Excellent interview. You prompted her well with those questions, she was obviously comfortable, and she answered with all the panache we came to love Mary for.
I remember thinking as I watched ordinary people - "Mary hooked me in her earlier work , she was just in her pleasant mode of personality acting and hiding her true self " she was so naked and bare in her portrayal of Beth jarret that I thought - this is the true Mary . After thinking about it and watching interviews such as this one Mary was being true in all of her performances . She just was a gifted actress who could channel her character and what was needed from her for a role . More was required in ordinary people - Redford knew this and she gave a masterful performance and should've won the oscar - she won the golden globe but lost out to spacek for coal miners daughter ! After this role people were stunned by her performance and couldn't see her play light roles again without supposing that Mary wasn't being true ! So unfair . I will say that coolness was always there - one never worried about Mary Richards alone in that beautiful apartment - she never showed her characters vulnerability because Mary the person wouldn't allow it much like Beth Jarret . She shows this vulnerability Here in this interview and that is why I believe her to be a great actress - it wasn't because she was cold and pleasant - she gave the characters performance as needed!

Her role in That 70s was hysterical. She was Jackie's boss at the TV station. They also had.valerie harpers as Kitty's sister and Betty White as Kitty's mom.
I agree almost totally. The one thing I would kind of disagree with is: "you never worried about Mary alone by herself in the apartment." I did a few times. Like when she was robbed. When she moved into the new apartment and her creepy neighbor invited himself in. When Ted refused to take no for an answer and wouldn't go away until she kissed him. They made that seem "cute" but it wasn't. Ted had made jokes about Spanish Fly before. Yes, Mary could handle herself, but that doesn't mean I didn't still worry about her. It's a prederatory world out there.
I had to laugh you guys being concerned for Mary Richards safety. She got that role down you actually worry for her. I think she could play the character so well because her personality is close to Mary Richards. She is such a sweetheart you want to help her lol.
And I still think her role as Jackie's boss is the only bright point of the last season of that 70s show. She is just an evil b#tch. Completely the opposite of her known persona. Check it out🙂
As great as Mary was in Ordinary People I think Sissy Spacek was too in Coal Miner’s daughter.

This is such a good interview! You asked such profound questions and Mary always seems so honest and friendly. Some people ask if you could have lunch with anyone in the world, who'd you choose and I always said Mary Tyler Moore. I live in Minneapolis and every once in a while I go to visit the Mary Richards statue or go walk by the house in the Kenwood neighborhood. Such an icon.

Thank you. I've been waiting for a special piece since the news of Ms. Moore passing and haven't seen it. The networks and other pieces have been lacking. But this interview was relaxed and let her.touch on many subjects in her life.
