To anyone considering taking up skimboarding: Save up and buy a fibre glass/carbon fibre skimboard. Don't waste time with cheap wooden ones. They are smaller and less buoyant, and will make things harder than they need to be. Speaking from past experience!
Wrong. Most learn on a $30 board. Some giant percent of people will last only one session. No need to needlessly drop $200 bucks on something you might not do much. Expensive boards are for advanced people. To start out you are skimming on sand and 1" water, any board will do for that.
John, what's your sporting background? From what I keep hearing about skimboarding and how hard it is, seems like you had a a very quick learning curve.
I’ve heard people claim that surfing is harder than skimming. it seems to me skimming requires a bit more coordination & balance. I know surfing requires those things, but with skimming you have to drop the board, basically catch up to it, then get on while it’s moving. I’m clumsy though, so what do I know? 😂
You don't need to chase the board with skimming you can do a one step drop or money crawl there are tutorials they give you alot more speed and save energy
Props! The quick-mount technique is the way to go if you are ever interested in hitting a break. After many years of chasing the board and then jumping on I decided to try getting on straight away like in this vid. HARD! But it is worth the effort. One's energy isn't spend chasing the board about. More skimming! My old Victoria has a ply core and weighs a ton (bought it 1982) but I have had so much fun on it since then. Cool vid!
I always wanted to surf but never get a chance to because where I live there aren't much wave to surf and most of my friends don't do surfing. I just found out this sport and man that's look so fun and you don't need big wave to skimboard. Gonna have to start skim boarding before summer end.
ah, i remember skimboarding for the first time. i got it down in one day xD but at first i kept on falling backwards and landed on my head a couple times, but it's really fun once you get it
Thank god you said it was a sport! I get sooooo much crap about it not being a sport but more like a hobby. It frustrates me that people say that when it's just like any other board sport around.
When I was a kid we had 2 boogie boards and every summer we'd drag them out to the beach but I never caught a wave. Some people would also try skimboarding with it and go up and down the beach. If only I'd mastered it as a kid lol
@foreverfamous726 you live in San Diego. OK i was woundering what beach would be good to skim @. I have been to Del Mar its good, but what else is good?
hey guys i have a wood skimboard can i also ride the waves or is it only for flatland .if its only for flatland what skimboard shout i buy i only want to buy one for 50 $ ron jon has some. maybe you could give me a link or you know a shop in fl estero ;-)
@ExtremeAfroMan my 3 favorite brands to get boards from are victoria, zap, and exile. And if you're asking because you plan on trying it out, I would just get a decent wood board to learn the basics. I started with a small wood board, then got a slightly larger fiber glass board, and I now ride a carbon fiber board. As for traction there's a lot of brands, I use astrodeck and used to use x-trac. All of them are good really. But good luck if you're trying this out. My advice is to just keep tryi
@trakkon14 in my holiday i bought a board for 15$.. and didnt know that u have to try doing the waves until i saw a pro. but its not as easy as it looks. i keep keeping on.
My board is crappy and wooden and has no grips. I've just started skimboarding yesterday, and when I land on the board I keep slipping right off without even moving anywhere. Any suggestions?
You need to use "surf wax" on the top of your board. If the top of your board is slick you won't get anywhere but dead. If you have used surf wax on the bottom of the board you need to take it all off and replace it with "speed wax."
Lol the way I was taught was to follow the wave parallel instead of heading straight at it, but I'm also on a wooden board that is probably too small for me now, and came from a place where people only used wooden boards and did the same... guess it's time for an upgrade!
Skimming out to the waves is what advanced guys like to do because they can do tricks. Basic skimming is along the shore like you are doing. Basic skimming seems fun to me! But yes if you want to skim out to deeper water and catch waves you'll need a better board, but you'll also need evil speed!
when i go skim boarding i dont go out to the deeper parts of the ocean i go along the shore for going long distances its actually pretty fun when when seaweed is on the ground you go pretty far cauz its slippery
are the deck pads absolutely necessary for this? i just ordered mine and i'm wondering if i really need to buy the pads. i remember skimboarding once as a kid and i don't think the board i used had pads on it.
No they are not necessary but probably helpful. Without the pads you will need to use surf wax on the top of the board to keep it from being slippery. The pads allow you to not waste time waxing the board, but more importantly they help you place your feet properly, at the very centerline of the board and at the very bacj.
question. i have a victoria skimboard and it doesn't have any pads, are pads something i will need? are they needed for riding the waves like the pro guy does?
Average skim boarding with me
Throws board on the water
Jumps on
Falls backwards
Goes back to beach chair
Eats chips
Repeat
mmmmm, chipss!
This is gonna he me in about an hour
And what do you do when the chips are down?
@@TheLarryBrown holy shit I commented this when I was 12 and it got hella likes I don’t even remember writing
you were getting it! the hardest part is getting comfortable with your drop and sand to water transitions.. I'm gonna make some tutorials soon
I'll believe that when I see it.
love your chanel and your logo as well
Who else is watching this one hour after buying a skimboard
same
Bloopy Doopy webb me
I just got a skimboard at lake Michigan
😂😂😂
3.5 hours...

Bought my skim board yesterday. Trying this out tomorrow. Pretty excited!
Cool video, saw skimmers for the first time in Cabo St Lucas in extreme waves, and it has interested me ever since
John, what's your sporting background? From what I keep hearing about skimboarding and how hard it is, seems like you had a a very quick learning curve.

I'm excited and a bit nervous to try this. Great video, thanks!
it's easier for me to go when the wave just fell and another starts coming in rather than when the foam is gone and another wave comes in

3:50 dude that was encouraging! you should keep on doing it, obviously you have some skills!
What brand pads are those ? Also any recommendation for brands when it comes to pads ?
How do you get the wooden boards to slide on sand ?
I skate, and longboard. I have one of these. Never used it. Gonna try this summer.
this video got me stoked on skimming years ago
@macbeasty no u dont need traction pads to do that. it just helps out if u have them.

ah, i remember skimboarding for the first time. i got it down in one day xD but at first i kept on falling backwards and landed on my head a couple times, but it's really fun once you get it
What color are those?
To skim you have to keep trying it took me years to learn but once you start to get the feel you get it
Nice, i liked it!
witch boards are you both using i need to know
Thank god you said it was a sport! I get sooooo much crap about it not being a sport but more like a hobby. It frustrates me that people say that when it's just like any other board sport around.
@macbeasty u dont need them. it just makes the board more grippy

What beach is this
@loudbarth13 what beach is this?

Very well made video!
What were the boards in this video

@foreverfamous726 you live in San Diego. OK i was woundering what beach would be good to skim @. I have been to Del Mar its good, but what else is good?
His last spray was pretty good for first time

nice looks like fun!!
you giys are legends
how long are they
what boards are they using ?
this guy is riding a better board than ive ever had and its his first time...
what do you surf if you only have little ass shore waves?
is there a weight limit for using a skimboard? Is there a way to calculate the size of the skimboard needed based on your body weight?
yea its just the board size like how tall are you if your more than 5ft 4 inch try a 52 or 54 in skimboard
hey guys i have a wood skimboard can i also ride the waves or is it only for flatland
.if its only for flatland what skimboard shout i buy i only want to buy one for 50 $
ron jon has some. maybe you could give me a link or you know a shop in fl estero ;-)

le skimboard est fait en quoi ?( fibre de verre ?)
extreme outdoor supply or buy it straight from a brand website like exile or victoria skimboards
seems so fun
where is this?
hi what board are you using ? :)
so can i ride a wave using a wooden skimboard?? would it work as well as the carbon fiber one?
Yes, a wooden board is good for basic skimming along the shore. You will need a better board if you want to skim out to deep water and catch waves.
i got a triple x wave assualt board for 200 buks. i havnt tried it yet cuase its winter but it looks good.
3:50 perfectly timed wrap
this guy got the hang of it nice
does it matter what kind of board you have?
Are this board wood or foam?
Lol the way I was taught was to follow the wave parallel instead of heading straight at it, but I'm also on a wooden board that is probably too small for me now, and came from a place where people only used wooden boards and did the same... guess it's time for an upgrade!

how can you get a lot of speed?
Very cool
I like it when u hit a wave and go flying
how do u skim board in waves i always sink..
when i go skim boarding i dont go out to the deeper parts of the ocean i go along the shore for going long distances its actually pretty fun when when seaweed is on the ground you go pretty far cauz its slippery
funny and good video!
skimboarding is soooooo difficult but so much fun
are the deck pads absolutely necessary for this? i just ordered mine and i'm wondering if i really need to buy the pads. i remember skimboarding once as a kid and i don't think the board i used had pads on it.

So much fun :D
My left ear enjoyed the video
helped a lot
best sport ever
if you plan to ride waves then should you get a traction pad?
Yes, but otherwise just use the usual surf wax.
Nice video
Do you get grips with your skim boards or do you add them later
Usually add them later.
question. i have a victoria skimboard and it doesn't have any pads, are pads something i will need? are they needed for riding the waves like the pro guy does?
Just use the normal surf wax on top of the board if you don't have the pads.
@@TheLarryBrown Lol!! Bro, my comment was 11 years ago. I don’t even know where my skimboard is anymore.
@mario0218 it is possible to use a woody on waves. check out "kids on boards", they rip on plywood.
Laguna Beach?
Are wooden skim boards any good
not for wave riding skim like in the video, but flat land is ok
you can stilll get waves but its alot harder i would recommend zap traction pads i just got them today and i love them highly recommend them.
where was this filmed?
