  • I have't done a good ole lawn update for a while so how about an all around update on what's going on the yard. I also show you how to measure the cutting height on your mower so you can get an accurate measurement on your mowing height. We also discuss how I have mowed the mowing height a bit lower in my backyard and there's a little mowing footage with the Toro Timemaster as well.

    Hey Ryan. Nice video. I am sorry to hear you had to put your other dog down. That is very hard. I have been there. But is a joy that you give them a good life and they bless you and your wife as well. Dogs are great - they are somewhat inconvenient when traveling and definitely don't live long enough, but I can't imagine our home without one. Cheers.

    Hey Ryan. Watched this video again today. I do miss some of this more basic content that you used to provide. Sometimes lawn mowing can get too advanced / fancy with all of the various treatments that can be applied that sometimes we forget about the basics which got us there. Hope you doing ok.

    @JoeEinMinne Před 5 lety +2

    Just as a general comment - if you adjust the front-back wheels unevenly, your blade is going to be tilted biased to the low front or back, whichever is lower. Thus the cutting height measurement is really at the front edge or back edge, whichever is lower, not the side discharge. Or did you find that the timemaster has the blade out of plane from the wheels?

    @JamCanGurl Před 6 lety

    TFS! It’s nice that you try to answer questions asked in the comment section. I’m a cat person but those dogs are so cute!
    Someone said cinnamon gets rid of ants but I’ve determined that was a lie 😬. Also tried boiling hot water since it wasn’t in the grass ( chemical free options first) but that didn’t really work either. This is the second year since I noticed ants and I can’t let the population get out of control.

    I have been messing with height adjustments all season long too. Between 3" and 4.25" with different mowers. I do really like the 4"+ look but some grass, especially by my landscaping and under my one tree sure likes to lay down. Put some nasty "swirl" marks in parts of the grass under the tree as well. After I went 4"+ I just can't bring myself to go back though!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety

      I like the lower cut look so I'm fine with it but I need to make some adjustments next year to keep it greener during the heat.

    Ever try bagging and side discharging at the same time. I'll do it when I don't want to bag but little too thick and need to take some grass up

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety

      Yes I have actually. For me it usually ended up still throwing out most of the clippings but does work in some ways.

  • @davidkern9154

    Love all your tips on lawn care, thanks so much, I was going to try some milo this year but I went with Scott’s instead, my lawn look great until the summer dried it up, just wondering if milo would have worked better? Home owner in Illinois.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety

      Hard to say really. Milo doesn't really help with the fact that yards dry out in this kind of heat. It can improve the soil over time which is definitely a good thing but I don't think it would be a drastic difference at this point.

  • @nygrasshole
    @nygrasshole Před 6 lety

    Awesome video Ryan. This is my first season raising the height all the way up as LCN advised. I’m in full sun all day and his has thickened my turf dramatically. It does lay over in one area on the side of the house. Perhaps due to slightly less sun then full sun?? Other then that the height is working wonders. I’m almost positive I will purchase the timemaster this year. Probably right before aerate and overseeding time.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety +1

      Depending on the type of turf you have it should work very well to cut high. Some types like mine were actually bred for a lower cut so it makes a bit tougher to do. I had it trained to around 3 inches the past couple years and shouldn't have done anything different but too late for that.

    Ryan, I have this same small area of lawn in my backyard that every summer I get the same brown patch or dollar spot in the lawn. It doesn' t matter how much rain we get or how often I use milorganite or use my underground sprinkler system. It has to be the dormant spores in the soil that awaken in the hot weather. I tried fungicides and it doesn't help much except maybe contain it. Should I just re-sod that 10 by 10 foot area?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety

      Hmm that is interesting. Fungicide prevention should take care of it if you get that down before the heat and humidity hits but I am not sure why it would not be effective.

    Just curious, why’d you switch to bagging halfway through? Was it to just add clippings to your wife’s garden? Also, what length is the highest setting on your mower? One last thing, do you have a link to that termidor stuff? And do you know if it’s okay to spray on ant hills directly on the lawn without damaging it?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety

      I switched because I felt like I was throwing a few too many clippings, but yes I try to add clippings to the garden periodically as well. 4.25" is the highest setting. Link to Termidor is in the description and yes I sprayed it on 2 ant hills in the lawn without any issues. I would still stay away from spraying anything in the heat of the day.

    a bit of an odd question but how long does the bag on the TimeMaster last? I use a Super Recycler and I go through a bag every season! Mowing between 2 -3 times a week depending on how happy my lawn is!

    Hey Ryan I’m planning on using allyn Hanes approach with pre-emergents using Prodiamine/early spring, Dithiopyr 3 months later, and finally dithiopyr 3 months after that but have no clue how to incorporate fall overseeding on a northern lawn with this approach. Any ideas? Or possibly any links to one of your videos if u address this issue. Still awhile till fall but I’m planning now. And thanks again 👍🏻

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 6 lety

      You would probably just want to do the early spring and the first dithiopyr app if you are seeding fall or worried about it affecting that.

      Ryan Knorr Lawn Care My John Deere attachment fits on my Honda HRX, yes you can lower it to ground level and gentle dethatch but lifted to maximum it's over a inch above the soil level. There is a sliding, lockable collar on an upright shaft that the front wheel pivots on. The stripes are very nice.
      Older models of Atco reel mowers had a simpler front comb, held down by springs, useful on only well groomed, close cut turf.
      This company has seemed to go beyond the front rakes of a couple years ago, they no longer show the double row model on one for 21 inch machines, it seems a shame for there lack of marketing to a wide audience, to be their down fall.
      Perhaps they are crap, I don't know.
