    PC Case designers take notice -- if you want to design a case that any graphics card can fit in, just design one without a wall. :D Awesome job.

    Nice video man. To everyone complaining about the looks, it's an open air test bench. It's not meant to be 'pretty', it's meant to be functional and I think it does that very well.

    THIS is what the techno-geek world needs MORE of! Your resourcefulness factor is more hyper-exaggerated than Wolverine's HEALING factor! A case from the late 1990s, that can be the backbone of an open air case, is quite a cool example of your creativity! I've posted on other "modding" comment sections, and cited that there should be not only certifications for modding, but SCHOOLS! Why should it be so taboo, for computer nerds as myself, to be incapable of working with my hands, and even enjoying it? There is no reason.

    Beautiful design, paint job, video editing and the video shows how much effort you put into the structure that is your virtually free test bench. My only regret was throwing away my old of case a month ago. ;(

    Really nice job for a simple build. I think I'd consider some sort of open frame side that would give you some handles to pick it up by as well. Plus if you put hole in the right places, you'd give yourself some RAD attachment points.

    i run a small ewaste management company and found this helpful. i grabbed a random tower and ended up using tin snips and i grantee mine is the ugliest anyone has laid eyes on. but it works for my bench work. my suggestion for the MKII would be acrylic body or case lidding. all electronics give off ER/F and ive been weary about building an open case for testing random board and parts people throw out for resale. but i fixed this by putting it behind something and "shield" myself from it. anyways food for though

    Rather than using the plumbing tape I was thinking a can of rubberized truck bed coating. It should coat the edges, as it goes on fairly thick. Just tape off the portions you don't want coated. I think it would give you a cleaner look.

  • @johnbeer4963
    @johnbeer4963 Před 6 lety

    i like it. What i usually do to protect from sharp edges is use rubber edge strip, it's low profile and looks tidy but isnt great for complex sections like that foam tape you used is. Also in the past i've used a file to roughly de-sharp the edges then run some cheap ass 2 part epoxy resin glue just over the sharp bits.. still poky sharp but not slice you like a razor sharp

    Awesome, never considered recycling an old case in that manner.
    Only recommendations i can think of would be a support railing for the removable mobo tray (on the opposite side of the i/o, to accomodate large gpu's) and since that case is dated im assuming the standoffs mounts are set for standard atx, modify the tray for mini/micro atx and if you have the real estate on the tray, e-atx/xl-atx...
    just realized as i was typing this... But in using different mobo form factors, doing so, will misalign your cases i/o... consider instead of reusing the cases i/o panel, use (for lack of a better term) erector set style railings to support just the gpu and have it screw into that support railing.

    as a metal worker by trade the easiest way to clean up those sharp edges is with the same grinding wheel you used to cut the case then take a wire wheel on the grinder and go back over the edges again just for good measure. If you have a fine cut bastard file that works great also.

    if i wanted i could strip it add sliding rails and install it into a desk right? does that make sense? obviously ill figure something out for fans but you think that would work? if not curious what is required for safety within the case. for example the spacing for the motherboard. worried about static electricity.

    I have a mid tower ATX case in my house and i'm definitely going to do this. I was looking at buying a test bench, but why? I can just make my own. I'll probably go with black and green with a hint of purple for the color. My setup has green and purple led lights. so thinking that I'll match the test bench with it.

  • @conrado10000
    @conrado10000 Před 7 lety +3

    Suggestion
    1-use an ATX motherboard with SLI support
    2-keap the video card on the motherboard the way you left,connected directly to the motherboard PCIe
    3-with the second card,you put it on the horizontal, with the fan facing outside .I would suggest using Thermaltake Core P5 horizontal VGA stand,an its pci express riser.This way you can still use the SLi bridge,and you won't have one card blocking the air entrance (or exhaust) of the other.
    if any one knows any case that uses on video card on vertical and the other on horizontal,please let me know.

    I had this same idea, but I kind of decided against it because of how cheap the actual open air bench's can be. I had 3 old cases that I was really thinking about doing this to, and if I would have seen your video just a few weeks ago, I would have made this. Anyways, great video man! I really like your modded test bench aside from two little things, the reset switch, to me looks like a bad idea. Seems like it might be too easy to accidentally hit the button. I also dislike how the foam tape turned out, it is a great idea, I understand you need something there, but (imo) it kind of hurt the case's looks :/ .... Oh well, thanks again man. Awesome video.

    Wearing gloves when unsing saws or grinders can be dangerous. Doesn't make sense for most people but you have to remember: If your hand touches any moving parts you may hurt your skin or get a deeper wound, a glove can get stuck on a blade and pull your hand in, which can be way more dangerous. That's what anybody using power tools and machinery professionally learns.
