Join us as we pair a chocolatey stout with four Irish whiskeys: Jameson Irish Whiskey, Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey, Slane Irish Whiskey, and Hell-Cat Maggie Irish Whiskey. Jameson is the cheapest bottle here at $18. You should try the Jameson finished in Stout barrels called Caskmates
Enjoyed this content. Always appreciate the humor in your videos. Cheers.
Next yr you should try The Tyrconnell and Knappogue Castle. I'll have to try Hell Cat Maggie next yr, I did my first blind flight this yr, so interesting.... Great stuff. You 2 are quickly becoming my favorite whiskey couple. 👍👍
The stout you two are drinking sounds amazing end of sentence. Cheers!
Ghostfish Brewing makes great beer!
Hey you two... I'm surprised that you left Bushmill's out of the mix! Slainte!!
Hey Stefan! We flipped a coin for this lineup. Paddy and Powers also got left behind. Next time!
Redbreast 12 remains my favorite Irish..amongst the small number I've tasted, but checkout Powers Three Swallow sometime as well.
I’ve had Hell-cat twice. Loved the first time, not so much the second. Don’t want to buy a bottle to try a third time, so I’ll wait until it’s offered to me. Slainte.
Haha, nothing wrong with that. We weren’t crazy about our first nip of it, but it pairs really well with a beer. Slainte!
(Golf Clap) very nice. A swell lineup
The Kilbeggan was recommended by a very fine gentleman indeed.
We are fans of Irish whiskey but too many are very light at 80 proof. A couple others that you should try are Waterford Dunmore at 100 proof and, as someone else suggested, Red Breast Cask Strength (the one I have is 115 proof). The higher proof points seem to allow the whiskey to carry more flavor.
Similar to bourbon, we agree that this low proof point offers a minimum of flavor and satisfaction. We did purchase a 105-proof special edition bottle that we'll be enjoying during our happy hour livestream on St. Patrick's Day and we're very excited about it!
Redbreast 12 Cask Strength. That is all.
Agreed. The best Irish whiskey IMO.
I'll have to check out your newer videos to see if you have tried Bushmills Black Bush, an absolute bargain punching well above its price point as a sherry cask finished triple distilled (I believe) Irish that always delivers.
It's a great every day, mixer, Friday pour, whatever.
Slante!
Not sure we ever tried it on camera, but we tasted it in Dublin last fall and thought it was terrific, especially for the price.
I enjoy Jameson and Slane as entry level options. Redbreast 12, cask strength, 12 Lustau and 15 are quite good.
I've been trying to get a bottle of Greenspot but I can't find it around here.
As a bourbon preferring drinker myself, I have found Proper Twelve as a good transition whiskey from bourbon to Irish. I will have to try that Hell Cat Maggie though!
1st Don't wait a year! 2nd Powers Gold Label, 3 Swallow & John Lane as a show. Three of my Favorite Irish Whiskeys. 3rd You can also run the Jameson collection. They have a few different styles. Black Barrel Jameson is great and I believe finished in extra charred Bourbon Barrels. 4th The Spots...Green, Yellow, Blue and Red. 5th Tullamore DEW 12 year old costs only $48 MSRP
Executive producer Pete nailed it!
Got me in the mood for my own little Irish ☘️ flight! Great one, guys…always fun to mix it up a bit!
That's the idea! Cheers, Paul.
Hell-Cat is sourced from Cooley and Killbeggan's basic bottle (the one you reviewed) is also still sourced from Cooley. Slane use to to be sourcing from there too, but when Beam-Suntory bought Cooley, they had to switch. Beam also ownes Killbeggan btw. Ya'll should check out Dingle, Waterford, and West Cork for interesting bottles. If you do another head-to-head blind, use that Killbeggan (Cooley), Jameson, Bushmills White Label, West Cork Bourbon Cask, and Tullamore DEW. Those are the 5 original distilleries and their bottlings before the new Irish boom.
Great video! I’ve tried 3 of those, and liked them all. Jameson’s has some interesting special releases like Black Barrel that are worth a try too. Cheers!😊🥃
I am hoping that is your Irish Whiskey cap and not the result of another attempt at a haircut ;) I have been wanting to dip my toes in Irish Whiskey. Been a very long time, so bought a mini bottle of Jameson not too long ago just as kind of a baseline. I think being mainly a 90+ proof bourbon drinker (Very much mostly on the "+" side), it just left me wanting for more. I feel like I am in line with what Bill Becher mentioned, and Red Breast Cask Strength may be my first serious bottle of Irish (If I can find one around here at a reasonable price). This was fun to watch...thanks!
LOL Phil won’t cut his hair again. We totally understand how you feel about the lower proof being less satisfying. We bought a 105 proof Clonakilty for our St. Patrick Happy Hour that we can’t wait to get into. All that said, 80 proof Irish whiskey sure pairs nicely with good beer. 😃
There is no bad whiskey just palate preference.... Cheers 🥃
What a fun idea! Love it! Those caramel with wine, bitter, bready, bubblegum and apple notes, how fun! Personally if the Irish I’ve had, I prefer Slane, it just has a great mouth feel and profile for me. Great job guys!
We were shocked that the Slane didn't take the win. When we thought about it afterwards, the bubble gum note was probably giving away the Slane profile due to it being a Brown Forman product. Cheers!
@@TheBourbonVan true, Jameson is a great Irish, and either way, fun video guys!
Not really gotten into many Irish whiskeys but I do have a Jameson bottle here or there...nice flight, interesting results. Cheers!
Great video! Going to try some Hellcat Maggie!
Thanks Jeff! Enjoy!
Have to add Connemara Irish whiskey
Love the “paddy cap”… I’m a fan of Irish whiskey! Thank you for the review! Guessing Norman skipped the tasting as he probably prefers bourbon?! Cheers! 😊🐾🥃
Haha, he's got his own opinions. Cheers!
Never had any of them. Think I will try Hellcat Maggie just for the name. Lol
Love y’all’s videos. From my limited drinking experience goes nothing I have tried so far beats Redbreast 12. It’s my favorite Irish whiskey. Keep it up I live in myrtle Bch sc can’t get some of the bourbon that you guys review but I still love your videos. Take care and party on. See you at Normans birthday party. Later y’all
Thanks Al, cheers!
I have Slane and Jameson Black Barrel at home, but I prefer Green Spot, Redbreast 12, and Teeling Single Malt. Irish (for me) all starts to taste the same after a while, so ones that stand out a little appeal to me.
I love that y'all are willing to experiment beyond bourbon and rye. This was fun.
This year has been really interesting. Ever since we learned to taste whiskey properly, we’re finding something to appreciate in nearly every style and brand.
Nice change of pace with the Irish whiskey, but am I the only one who's more curious as to what stout your were drinking?
Cheers 🥃
We were hoping somebody would ask! We were enjoying Ghostfish Brewing's 6th Anniversary Triple Layer Chocolate Cake Stout. So tasty!
Great review and of all the drams here I now am thinking I should try the Hell-Cat Maggie. I was surprised the Kilbeggan did not do better. Perhaps try their single pot still, a great release IMO. Cheers!
We were surprised by the Kilbeggan placement too, especially because we love it outside of this blind flight. Thanks for the recommendation on the single pot still. We’ll check it out!
@@TheBourbonVan the additional oats is certainly interesting
@@WhiskyNeighbour we love oats on the Lee W Sinclair bourbon we’ve tried. The mouthfeel imparted from the grain is fantastic.
Great video as always...may i suggest Blackbush, redbreast and jj correy ! cheers !
Absolutely! Cheers, Chris!
I like this change of pace. It’s cool to see your takes on something besides bourbon/rye. What was the scotch that Phil was liking?
Thanks a lot, Carlos. I’ve been enjoying Ardbeg Uigedail. McCarthy’s Peated Single Malt is currently hitting my palate as well.
Not big on Irish Whiskey, however, I do like Jameson. As for Scotch, I prefer Speysides. 95 percent bourbon guy here ... 😂
We did not like Hellcat at all, though they have changed their source several times, so who know if we have the same product in our bottle vs yours. We have not put it in a flight yet, so maybe that will change things.
I am partial to Paddy.
Totally understandable! On their own, we really enjoyed the Kilbeggan and weren't very fond of Hell-Cat at first, but strange things happen in flights.
@@TheBourbonVan Oh, for sure. Our flights have rarely gone the way I expected
That was ah Lepre-cut. Stump yah big toe and find the pot 'O gold doncha know.
Where's Red Breast, Powers, Teeling or any of the spot Irish whiskeys?
We tasted 3 Redbreast whiskeys in last year's foursome. These were the top 4 that were recommended to us in the comments of last year's video.
@@TheBourbonVan Thank you! If you decide to do another St Patty's Day review you should consider these whiskeys, I love your show!
No Teeling?
Good grief man, how many bottles are we supposed to put in our flights??? 😅
Where is the Tullamore dew?? By far is my most favorite Irish whiskey 🥃 and then redbreast 12.
For me Jameson just tastes horrible.
Tullamore, Bushmills, Paddy, and Powers were excluded in this year's coin toss. But I believe we have our flight set for next time with this list.
No Redbreast, Lame!!!!!!!!
We included 3 separate Redbreast whiskeys in last year’s video. We think repeating ourselves would be lame.
