Growing up, I used to see Ian hanging around the south side of the eastern suburbs on a regular basis. He was one humble bloke and never had a big head. Top player with a fabulous attitude. Total legend.
Sterlo is an Excellent interviewer. Asks interesting questions, has great knowledge , let's his guest speak without interrupting. Always great viewing.Ian Roberts was an absolute star and tough competitor on and off the field.Wish him all the very best.
This man who breaks down Stereotypes gives an incredible insight and HONESTY to his life. What a player he was ,big ,fast, powerful, would be a force in todays game too.
Roberts shows here a terrific courage and dignity shown on a surprisingly wide range of issues. So he's surely a role model for many people. And one heck if a player as well, I would have Roberts for sure in my all-time Blues 17. Perhaps even the typical gay obsession with fitness gave him an edge as he never carried a spare tire around the middle, apparently not even now.
Thank you so much Ian for talking about your brain injury and bringing awareness to it. More awareness and understanding is getting out there to the public which is great. I had an accident in 1997 and have been living with my brain injury for little over 20 years. It can be challenging in some areas but I try my best everyday. All my best to you and your future Ian.
As a manly fan Ian is a legend and I was and am a huge fan of his footy . As an adult man and father of boys , Ian is an inspiration and wonderful example of a man with the upmost courage , determination, generosity, caring and compassion. Long may Ian grace our world and I hope he continues to have a great life after facing such adversity and hardship. Not only a legend on the field but bigger than that off it .
Incredibly brave for being so honest Ian and well done for being open about mental health & your learning difficulties. Too many of us are affected in various forms and suffer in silence through fear of embarrassment. Credit to you!
I sense a deep thoughtful gentle guy that is poignant about his past younger suppressed sexuality. He is reflective and apologetic about his life. Don't look back sunshine, you can't change the past, you can only change how you feel about it.
Well done Ian & Sterlo. Great to hear Ian's insight & Sterlo's terrific manner of interview - a gentle & class act. Stay strong & safe to you both. I'm a Kiwi btw.
Ian. Good on Ian for speaking so honestly. Your apology to Gary Jack is so heart warming. Some people would ignore that situation and others would laugh it off, but you took it seriously, faced up to it and put it right. I admire you for doing that.
Only just watched this and it has expanded my admiration for Ian Roberts Amazing individual that can have so much warmth and humanity despite all the terrible things he had to go through Amazing that the man talking was also able to be a dominant force in one of the most physically intense sports
i have watched this video a couple of times now i would just like to say what a great interview by peter sterling Ian Roberts to me will always be a great person more people should watch this video Ian Roberts your are a champion
In my top 5 favourite players ever...totally committed to the game, incredibly talented, no tougher player, super fit, brutally efficient and effective. A great South Sydney junior, and a true gentleman. Thanks for your honesty Ian.
He definitely shattered the image of what people expected of a gay man as he would be the last person you’d expect to come out as he was an aggressive, hard hitting enforcer. Mario Fenech who we all know has a highlight reel of stinks would tell you that if you were a gay man back in that era you were perceived as weak but he also said that Ian changed his perception forever when he came out.
One of my favourite players of all-time, man when he hit them and they woke up, their clothes were out of date... Very moving interview from one of the toughest men ever to play, I was humbled by seeing this brave man get emotional. Fantastic interviewing from Sterlo as well.
My favourite player back on the day ..what a beast on the field .. and met him off it a couple times , what a top down to earth bloke that both times took an hour or so to have a chat , sign stuff and all ..legend

+Wong Nicodemus the hits we have these days?? Lol we don't have hits anymore. And we have players who fake injuries to gain penalties. He would destroy some of these pre madonnas! He played in the hardest era of the nrl
When Ian Roberts was playing for Souths he was the dominant prop in the game, but because Piggins was offended by his sexuality he got rid of him to Manly. Would have been better to get rid of Piggins imo, because it was all downhill from there.
I am a 100% heterosexual australian male, always will be, in saying that I don't have an issue with homosexuality, whatever floats your boat, but Ian Roberts is one of my heroes. A tough, great player and a great human being.
As a grown man with 4 grandsons, ill never understand 2 men in a relationship, but ian roberts is a legend and a real down to earth bloke, if i ever met him id buy him a beer, hope one day ill somehow understand his sexual preference, maybe i am ignorant
But the most important part of the whole subject is that you don't have to understand his choices, or what makes him the human he is. No offence intended at all, but all that was ever needed to enable this man and million of others to lead a happy and fulfilled life is that other people just mind their own fucking business.
@@hannotn yes I agree with you, it's no ones business.... As I said i would buy him a beer if I ever met him. Still don't agree with his sexual preference, I am from the old school. Sorry if I offend anyone

For those of you too young, this bloke was a dead set warrior, fit, strong and mobile. Great player
An absolute weapon in a great bunnies pack

Absolutely, one of if not the most feared players in the game

@J G ok? Lmao
I met Ian on the NSW central coast one time , very friendly down to earth guy .
How great is it to hear a player say they chose a club purely for money. No bullshit - just the truth. Well done Ian Roberts.

Fantastic interview and an amazing insight into the life and mind of Ian Roberts.
@J G played by overpaid prima donnas
I met Ian once very quickly in Darlinghurst. Struck me as genuine gentle and absolutely GORGEOUS
Well done Robbo,
Being from Victoria you were one of my all time favourite players to watch. One of the hardest men to play the game....
What an amazing interview from both sides … good on them both. Big fan of both of these human beings.
Ian Roberts is a champion in more ways than one - his honesty in his answers were admirable. Once again a great interview from Peter Sterling
What an amazing role model. Super tough, yet soft enough to own up to his past indiscretions. Huge respect for you Ian.

I have massive respect for this guy.

Fair play to him for apologising for the Garry Jack incident.
