Unexpected Trade: Selling Rolex for Patek Philippe

Stuart kicks off the action with a customer who is trading in four watches for a Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time in white gold. He has quite a large collection including a 36mm Explorer 124270, a steel and rose gold Datejust 41 with a chocolate dial, a full black ceramic GMT-Master II 116701ln and a ‘No Time To Die’ James Bond Seamaster in titanium on the nato strap. Pre-owned precious metal watches from Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Rolex are currently available at substantial discounts compared to their original retail prices, attracting savvy buyers who are seizing the opportunity.
Jon is looking to buy a a selection of steel sports models from a gentleman as well as a very unusual and rare timepiece. The Lyrique Étude No.1 reference LE50-1 is a custom commission from a group of 52 watch enthusiasts. The white dial dress watch is cased in steel and and features a scarlett red handset and leather strap. Jon isn’t afraid to say that the owner will know far more than he does about this niche brand and is happy to hear the story of the watch.
Next up Joe is buying a first generation Batman GMT reference 116710BLNR from a gent who originally purchased it in 2016. The watch is in great condition but it will require a very light polish to bring it back to pristine retail ready condition. Can Joe make the right offer to close the deal.
Josh is in the store to show a 31mm lady Datejust in steel and gold with a beautiful olive green dial. This reference 278273 is an example of the classic combination of fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet.
To round things off Jon helps guide a gent through a part-exchange deal. The incoming watch is the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph in steel with a blue dial and the watches being considered for purchase are both Datejust 41 models. One has the blue baton dial and the other features the Wimbledon slate dial with roman numerals. If Jon can get the numbers to work for the customer there is a deal to be done.

Pop into your local AD and request the watch you want in the configuration you specify and see if you walk out the door with it. Lets me know how you get on
@@Tiberiusvonfunk I'll tell you how you get on with that request for a ladies watch. You give them the required configuration and you get the watch within 3 weeks to 3 months. Simples.
The ladies date just is fairly easy to get from Bucherer. I would never pay over retail for one.
They are impossible to get, said every grey shark in the market.

@@russellis6993 could not agree more! everyone and his dog has a Rolex, very few a Patek! Sure, at the pub know one will know the Patek except real watch enthusiasts but then, some of us don´t need to boast with a watch and would rather fly under the radar that's why I got rid of my Explorer and bought a Grand Seiko. Six years on I have no regrets!
I get that it's his £ and therefore his choice ... but he's off his rocker getting rid of those for the PP.
Maybe for you but there’s a good few Rolex I take over certain Patek modles

I feel like there be less of a reason to pay a premium with a second hand dealer who is not an AD, when the Rolex Certified Pre Owned program is rolled out more broadly.
I bought my first, a 116710LN full set from their CPO program through a large, reputable AD. Cost me a couple thousand more than what you see them for on Chrono24. Considering that you should have a vintage or slightly older second-hand piece sent in, I'd have been looking at around that range for a full service on the GMT by Rolex anyway. You're paying roughly the same but getting a 2 year international warranty, a service from Rolex directly and that sweet, sweet peace of mind.
Generally, the second hand costs seem to be quite fair compared to the overall market, although it varies between AD's as they set prices.

It depends on the price. £1000-2000 more to have it from cpo, then sure it’s worth it. But some of the prices I’ve seen the AD’s asking for cpo watches are ridiculous

Funny. You may get a Datejust if you’re lucky but probably not one in that configuration

No clue why I keep watching But I tune in . I think it’s a weird subconscious thing that I may want a slight more luxury in my life. I never chased it. I couldn’t careless but I do appreciate quality and experience. Owning a Rolex, or flying first class, or buying box seats, bottle service are some kinds of experiences I could appreciate it
