  • This is the worst Porsche 911 of all time. There are many Porsche models, including the Porsche 996, the 963, 718, 930, Taycan, and many more. But today, when I show you the worst Porsche ever in this short car review, you'll be blown away at why.
    PS. It's the Porsche 996, but what specific one?

    The 996.2 c4s and turbo were wide body. And m5s at the time were not true dry sump either. IMS bearing issues made up for a small percentage of 996s. You're exaggerating many of your "facts"

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 Před rokem +1

      Another "fact" that was a total falsity was his warranty void claim relating to the integrated dry sump system. Porsche never had any official policy that you would have your warranty voided for tracking a 996 regardless of what tires you had on the car. In fact, I happen to know a fellow who has had a 996 since new (very early car, 2/98 build) that had an entire new engine put in after less than 10,000 km of ownership. He tracked it almost every weekend at the time.

    Misinformed video the IMS issue was greatly exaggerated and the 996 turbo is one of the best of all of the turbo cars due to the engine and retention of the analog feel of the cars . I’ve owned many Porsches and loved them all including the base 996 ,997 and 993 turbo my favorite of all the cars was the 996 turbo . The subject of the interior is also questionable the new Porsches have very nice and fancy interiors the older ones never really did unless from the 60’s or the early 70’s Porsche spent the time on performance. The greatest thing about the new cars is the air conditioning and performance the old AC was pretty rough .

      I agree on all counts and yes the 996 Turbo is one of the best platforms ever. The Metzger split case engine with real dry sump and a unique intermediate shaft setup these cars are amazing and can take a lot of power upgrades. The Carrera and Turbo are really 2 entirely different cars.

    Interesting take. Ive owned 964 and 993 911s (the 2nd to last, and last air cooled models), and owned a 996. They all had very unique characteristics and my 964 C4 cabriolet was a daily driver for me for over 10 years. The air cooled models were much more quirky (which can be charming), but I really liked the ways my 996 was a lot more 'normal. For example having a strong ac (air cooled models feel like some warm air being blown on you) is a serious feature. The 996 feels light and easy to drive as well, while still be sure footed. Your comments about the IMS bearing are a bit over stated, because this wasn't an issue on the GT3 or Turbo 996s, but more importantly this is an issue that has been resolved on the vast majority of 996s at this point. Every 996 buyer (should) make sure this has been resolved. The 996 really helped Porsche 911s become modern, and you wouldn't have the 997, for example, without the 996. All tiptronic models are lacking (even the turbos), go with the 6 speed manual every time! Most importantly, the 996 definitely still feels and drives like a Porsche 911.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  Před 2 lety +1

      You are right on all counts and it was a transition car for the 911 which actually felt far more refined than the 993. I know many enthusiasts now love the more basic, raw, feel of the older air cooled cars. And yes the 997 and beyond simply got better with every next generation. Funny thing this week I was following a 95 Carrera Cab with the rear wind handle and it showed near perfect but I could smell the burning oil on the heat exchangers as I remember mine doing too.

      Makes sense that it would, the 996 was a ground-up new car, not a refresh sharing a floorpan with a car from the 60s. 996 is lighter, and the only thing it really shares with the 993 is that its rear engined and uses a similar multi-link rear suspension. The entire remainder of the car is new. Its more aerodynamic, the front suspension is totally clean-sheet, and the center of mass is much lower. I have a 4/98 C2 myself, couldn't ask for a more engaging or fun driver's car.

    Bro, the 996 was better than the 993 in every possible aspect. The ims fails hardly ever happened. By far most 996's never had any problem. The headlight makes it more desirable now, because it's the only model that has them. By the way, inspired on the great Le Mans racecars. The tiptronic is fantastic and bulletproof. The 996 is a fantastic car and a lot of fun to drive. It's a true Porsche in every single way.

    People loved to hate the 964 for a time too, and now they are worth more than 993s. I think you will find that in 5 year's time, a sorted, early 98 build 996 C2 Coupe will be worth more than most 997 C2s. The 98 built cars were hand-made on the 993 line alongside the last few 993 Turbo models, they were the last 911s to feature a cable throttle, they are far less prone to the IMS failure thanks to a dual-row bearing, and all cars 4/98 and later are immune to the coolant intermix issue. The 996 like the 964 before it is a transitional model. It was necessary that it existed as it does for Porsche to survive into the 21st century, and without it we would not have Porsche or a 911 today. The much-loved 997, under that new skin, is essentially a 996 with the engine bored out and with more modern electronics. The bottom line is that the 996 is lighter and faster than the 993, a better driver's car than any base Carrera to precede it, and more engaging to drive than any 911 to follow in its footsteps.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  Před rokem

      Fair statements and the 964 has always been a real, authentic 911 feeling car, flaws and everything. The 996 was leagues ahead of the 993 in terms of refinement, but much of the feel went with the older cars. The turbo is awesome and the later C4S was cool but I believe the early cars just had s alb side that lacked the hips that most other 911s had. Either way, its an amazing car to drive and will to take that away, but again, the 997 is such a great design that its arguably one of the best, especially the Gen2.

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 Před rokem +1

      @@ECPP Going to just agree to disagree on this. Once you drive a 996, air cooled cars (especially the pre-993s without the multilink rear) just feel like industrial equipment, not a sportscar. 996 loses none of the feel and agility and gains so much in refinement that its just a better car. Doubt anyone would want to daily an air-cooled car today if the weather is anything short of perfect, but my 996 has been up to the task. As for the 997, it picks up electronic nannies, and frankly, I don't like how it looks. Its a bloated mess from a styling perspective given that they had to graft the "old" round 911 shape onto the hardpoints of a 996 chassis (which is all a 997 is - a 996 in a new suit). 997.2 gets the 9A1, but becomes even more of a rolling computer in the process. There really is no car like an early 996, no e-gas, no traction control, just you, a flat-6, 6 gears, and ABS, but still with all of the creature comforts and dependability needed to be dailyed in any conditions.

AWD system between the C4/C4S and Turbo was unchanged. Suspension in the front was entirely unchanged save for springs, rear had minor adjustments. Brake got bigger. And thats really it, the cars are VERY similar, and the GT3 is even more similar to a C2. Narrow-body, just changed 1 stamped sheet metal piece, dropped in a different drivetrain, and changed the wheel carriers. A 996 Carrera can be made to handle and stop just as well as a GT3 for basically no effort and money, and a number of people over on Rennlist have swapped Mezger engines into their C2s.

    The problem is, 997 will bore score, not a question of "If" but "when", the 991 that came after feels a bit more numb in comparison, still great, but doesn't feel raw like the 997 and 997.
    The 993 that came before is nice, but now super expensive and IMHO overvalued, as a well set up 996 drives better. Plus the 993 styling is also divisive, I think I prefer the 996 front end to the 993, more so the 996.1.
    So you are left with a 996 vs 997 if you want a properly usable, daily that still feels small, nimble and raw.
    IMS at this age is pretty much a non issue, borescore is going to happen at some point on your 997. Plus, a 996 with centre console delete I think is nice than the 997.1 interior, 997.2 is better though.
    To be honest, as long as I have one on the drive none of the issues would stop me from buying any of them. And as I get closer to 50 a newer, less raw, more GT feeling 992 appeals more and more. Shame my bank balance doesn't agree. ;)

      Early 996s seem to be a real sweetspot. Cars built before ~8/98 were hand-built on the 993 line, and retain a cable throttle as well as the "granite" interior trim material which in my opinion looks quite nice. 3.4s rarely suffer from bore score, and as you said, IMS is overblown, but even then, the early cars get a dual-row bearing. Even less of an issue.

  • @johnnycashlesscomedy8616
    @johnnycashlesscomedy8616 Před 2 lety +5

    While the video was fun, I have to add a few thoughts of my own. The 996.2 you had on hand wasn't the true fried egg, which was in my mind a real aesthetic improvement in the .2's.
    As far as the Targa, the entire draw (for me) is the hatchback. It makes one of the best sport cars available into somewhat of a practical vehicle. Costco run? No problem.
    For people that can only have one car (like myself here in NYC) having a hatchback is a game changer in terms realistically owning a sports car as a daily driver.
    And it's quite stiff, being a cab reinforced body with an additional canopy rail for more rigidity. Of course it's not an ideal track car, but people do track it (Cabs cannot for safety reasons.) The suspension is tuned a little softer which is great on normal roads, but I can always firm it up with PASM when needed for the twisties.
    I do complete film shoots out of the rear hatch and frunk of my 2010 Targa 4S with a passenger as well. (And I'm talking about transporting C-stands or Grip stands for anyone who knows what they are.) I've also transported a bike with the wheel off and a 49" tv in the box.
    It took me 6 months to find the right Targa in late 2013, and in places with lots of 911's, the Targa's look(especially 997) is a nice distinction. Raj from MR Sportscars says he gets several requests for the 997.2 Targa every week.
    After some paintwork a couple of years ago, I had the entire car wrapped in Stek Paint protection film and ceramic. I intend to keep the car for decades to come. For me the combination of a hatchback, 2 small rear seats, plus self healing exterior film makes the dream of sports car ownership possible. The PDK takes it to another level of practicality for urban dwellers .

    There is some stuff here that I can partially agree to, but I find this quite subjective. Every 911 has its unique set of problems. I was in the market for either a 996 or 997 for the analogue experience but with retaining modern reliability and AC. 997 has a better interior in some ways, but I can't get over the cheesy and way outdated computer screen that all have paint flaking off. I actually like the curves inside a 996. So the 997 interior may be nicer other than that computer screen, but I wanted the better mechanical car. I also grown to actually like the 996.2 turbo headlights (so long as they are not sun fogged). Both the 996 and 997 base have has a great naturally aspirated 3.6 with linear power band all the way to redline without any jerky acceleration or turbos that can feel awkward. The later 911s have mostly gone to electric steering and that can't be better for a true steering feel of the road. So both 996 and 997.1 had great analogue 911 experience with modern reliability and AC. This is what I was craving for as we are heading into an age of horizontal self-driving elevators.
    I ultimately ended up with a 996.2 that was meticulously cared for by an amazing Porsche enthusiast and I can't tell you how amazing that engine bay looks and how mechanically sound this car is. For me, I wanted the most mechanically sound car, and 996 vs 997 was less of an issue. BTW, the 996.2 headlights came from the turbo, not the Boxter. The 996.1 headlights came from the Boxter. IMS's are also mostly all upgraded now that comes at the cost of a clutch replacement so not a big deal.
    Magnus Walker who owns at least four 996 911s also inspired me.
    Another argument for the 996 is that it is the model that saved Porsche. But for the 996, there may not have been any more 911s.

      Thanks I appreciate the comment and yes a 911 is still a 911. All versions are great sports cars, and I understand that many people love the 996. My first drive in the release of the 996 back in 1999 revealed a car that felt leagues more advanced and refined than the 993 before it. I know a got a chance to drive one and was quite impressed so it’s still part of the legendary bloodlines.

    Even a humble 2.5l 986, let alone a cabrio or targa 996, equipped with a tiptronic gearbox, is still a great car to drive. Btw I have had some pretty gross pizza in my day, but I get the analogy. There is no thing as a bad 911. Not everybody is after the same spec and quite a lot of people bought tiptronics, 4wd cars and targa models, to suit their own needs, so "worst" 911 is subjective. I bet a 996 can run rings around a similarly specced 993 or 964 all day long. Interior quality was better in later years with extended leather and again, it was a step up in terms of ergonomics and space compared to the revered 993, plus the heater actually worked. As to the slab-sidedness, well, pretty much all 911 cars were like that until the 993 came along and I prefer the narrow-body look anyway. That delicacy and small footprint has now been lost from the range and it's a shame. Looks-wise, I never liked the facelift/turbo 996 headlights and bumpers, but pre-facelift carreras look pure and beautiful to me, almost pebble-shaped, and the biggest leap forward since the 959. The 993 still had rain gutters, for crying out loud! I think the sweet spot with cost and looks taken into account is a 2-wheel drive 3.4l 996 with no sunroof and preferably the manual gearbox. Not as awe-insipiring as a 996.2 gt3, but still a purer and more feelsome drive than a fat, computer-driven 992. PS the IMS bearing can be easily upgraded to an aftermarket part that cures the reliability problem once and for all. The sump can also be upgraded to the x51 package.

    Well there are other Porsches with other probs !!!
    The luftgekühlt Modells are sure state of the art , but hey , those engines had also failures !!
    So now 996 : The headlights are absolutely beautiful !!
    But only in Gen 1 !
    Those came off the Le Mans cars and are so unique and awesome 👏🏽
    It contributes to the value of 996 witch is going up anyhow .
    The IMS stuff is so overrated !!
    It’s just 4% of all the 996 who had that probs !
    But it’s easy to recognize and solve !
    Most owners back then did not know how to handle this , cause everyone was trimmed to handle Aircooled issues !
    The 996 was the most successful 911 ever sold , so it couldn’t be that bad !!
    I find the Design so timeless great , cause it bridges the older gens into the newer designs !
    By the way , the interior with leather package is gorgeous!!
    Did you ever look into a 964 or 993 ??!!!
    It’s like sitting in a Autoscooter from the Fair !!
    Noooo Waaayyy !!
    996 was ergonomic lifestyle and started to look indeed sporty and cozy.
    The 997 even had a total boring interior, and the steering wheel is fresh from Mars !
    The 996 is one of the most beautiful design ( thanx to Pinky Lai ) and the next gen that states new Porsche Design is the 991 !
    But I think over all , those Porsches are getting too big , to be honest !
    If you think about the G- Modells , witch are so small , but sporty and handy , and so the 996 was growing also but still is fitting like a shoe , when you sit in it !
    By the way , the Tiptronic is great to drive , I just had also a little comparison trip with a friend of mine , who has a 3,6l stick , mine is a 3,4l Tippi .
    Well what can is say , my 300 horse C2 kept the same speed up’s and Autobahn stints as the 3,6 stick !
    He was not passing me until we reached the 160 miles runnouts !!
    He could pass me like a snail in rage !!
    I have also a third watercooler and wrapped headers , that keeps me from Borescoring .
    There are many upgrades out there now to make a 996 very reliable too !
    Get one now before it’s too late , it’s a great driving experience, as long as your suspension parts are in good shape , then don’t forget , those 911s are now 24 years old .
    I love mine so hard , I can only recommend to have the balls to get your self one ☝🏾

      You are totally right and a buddy of mine has the same car as yours but with a GT2 kit, larger wheels, a tune, larger turbos, injectors, hollowed cats and more and it’s a rocket. You are right, the Metzger engine is a beast with the GT1 split case and true dry sump oiling makes it a real winner. The only real weakness is tranny synchros if driven carelessly, and cooling pipes which need to be pinned or welded. Beyond this, better than most cars after and even before it in the 911 world. The Twin Turbo is nothing at all like the base Carrera and the integrated sump and poor intermediate shaft design.

      GT3 and GT2 also don't suffer from IMS. Not that it really matters, fewer than 1% of 996s suffered from IMS failure per the lawsuit's findings, and they were all failures at very low mileages. I wouldn't worry about IMS on a 996 today, if it really bothers you, just swap the bearing whenever you do the clutch. As for the interior, have you *seen* the 993's interior? Having the radio side-by-side with your rotary AC panel while your heater levers are on the floor between the seats sure screams quality, doesn't it.
