    In the late 70s I raced MX and progressed well but plateaued. Read that DeCoster had been a trials champ before MX. I bought a trials bike, set up sections (I lived on a farm), and practiced trials rather than wear out my MX bike. I learned so much. On a trials bike you can isolate an input and try different things and get a reliable, repeatable result. You learn things about balance and peg weighting that are not obvious on a MX bike, but matter. I also learned something about tires that is still largely ignored: edge quality. Whatever the tread/knob pattern, the grip is in the edges. I started cutting my MX tires to refresh the edges. Huge. It all made a big difference and was the smartest thing I ever did for MX. DeCoster and JM Bayle were both trials champs. 2 of the 5 best and and tidiest riders ever. Not a coincidence.

    I bought a trials bike back in the days when I was racing enduro to help with my technique in enduro. I fell in love with trials and ended up quitting enduro... Been 10 years competing in trials and I absolutely love it. Community is awesome, you can get an awesome training session in a really small area, it's cheaper, safer... Best decision I've ever made

      Yep. I live in the city in brissy. I hadn't riden a push bike in years, since I was a teenager, I'm 39 now, and i went and bought this sick downhill bike just to get around. I could never mono or do stoppies. It was only a few weeks, now i can ride everywhere on the back wheel, and i'm getting pretty good at stoppies too.

      Agree, I'm 44 and my 12yr old and I share an Evo 200 (biggest cc he could start). I have to make myself ride it but afterwards I'm always faster, looser and smoother on my big bike. The skills translate directly over and the muscle memory is easier to learn (only weights 150lbs).

    Completely agree on the importance of the Trials bike. Both my boys have Osets and the bike helped them transition from the balance bike to the 50 and built a good foundation for a life time of riding. I will always have a Trials bike for the kids to ride. I need to get one for myself. Keep up the great work!

    I started racing mx in 1970. I started riding trials in 1974 and within 2 months it knocked 15-20 seconds off my mx lap times. I loved trials and competed in trials for 5 years while I was also racing mx. I ended up winning the AMA District 5 Expert class Championship in 1976, rode a few Trials Nationals while I was racing pro mx. I'm currently 70 years old and still ride both in Vintage competition.

  • @aarongood220
    @aarongood220 Před 2 lety +6

    The problem with trials is it’s so bloody difficult. I’m not talking about u and your Mx mates messing around in a quarry but training with comp trials guys riding a 30ft section with 3 obstacles for two hours hopping and bouncing trying with every last ounce of energy to get over that tree root clean to get a run at the off camber step. Sweat pissing out of your tomato head while some 14yo rides it like it’s nothing . That’s why trials comp guys are such small elite group. I came from Moto to enduro to trials and it’s a ball buster to do properly as an average joe mxer.

    Think one of the issues with trials that puts off people is that it is actually quite a bit harder that Mx / enduro to learn. Most people could get on a Mx / enduro bike and after a bit of practice could ride around a track, maybe not fast, but they would get around.
    Trials not so much.

      Trials bikes make you use your CORE because you don't get the GYRO effect of the spinning wheels that come from SPEED, everything HAS TO COME FROM YOUR CORE as far as making/keeping the bike going where & how you want it to go & that's why they are such good training bikes, CORE & BALANCE from the BODY & not from the speed of the wheels.

    • @andristucs6044
      @andristucs6044 Před 2 lety

      Few things that put people off for trials:
      - it is not and does not look dynamic and aggressive which is a thing that people look for in a bike
      - bikes are quite expensive for what they are and relatively low quality, not thought out too well. A lot of shortcuts.
      - competitions are really boring for spectators
      - competition does not look and feel as a sport at all because of long time riders spend in lines before the sections
      - a lot of riders out of shape does not help the prestige of the sport

    Trials bikes aren’t as “sexy” as MX bikes that guys are hitting big jumps and having chicks dig the MX guys. But if young people could think past the look of trails bikes and that genre and think about what trials bike can teach you with finesse of clutch, body position and over all feeling of a bike’s capabilities it will help younger kids have a better understanding of what they and the bike are capable of. I always tell people who ride street bikes that if you have never ridden a dirt bike then they should because it allows them to understand and be able to handle different situations that could hurt you on the street. A dirt bike rider turned street rider is always a better rider than the guy who just jumped into street bikes.
    I’ve been looking at getting another trials bike because I miss messing around on it and learning because you’re constantly learning to profess your skills and trials bike allow you to do that much easier.
