Southafrica since their reincarnation into cricket in 1992 were a very dangerous formidable side. From 92 untill 99 they were really unbeatable be it in their home or playing away from home. Late legendary Hansie cronje had the best ever cricketing skills & mind in the world. Being a batsman could read the bowlers mind & produce an unbelievable innings, same being a bowler would make inroads & plan the batsman very smartly to get him out, being a captain would easily master the weakness of opposition teams. But unluckily the scandal caught him. Almost every player were mentally & physically tough. Each teams used to fear them. Their batting, bowling or unbelievable fielding it was a treat to watch. 92, 96 & 99 were truly southafrica worldcups. Just were unlucky with the duckworth lewis rule in 92 semifinals against england which went against southafrica & loss against silly windies in 96 wc quarter finals cuz some dubious decisions went agsinst southafrica & the unforgettable klusener donald terrible mix up in 99 wc semi-finals against australia. Love from INDIA.

1996 cricket world cup is the most unique world cup ever played among the 19 cricket world cups till date ( including 7 T20 world cups). Below are few facts :
    1. Only world cup to be won by a co-host nation. Sri Lanka won final in Lahore and not on home soil
    2. Only final in which both captains were left handed batsman
    3. Only final match to be held in pakistan
    4. Pakistan is the only country which hosted a world cup final without hosting a semi final match !!!!
    5. Only final to have a century in a success full chase. Arvinda di silva scored 107.
    6. Only time world cup trophy was handed over by head of a state. Benazir bhutto the then PM of Pakistan handed over the trophy to arjuna ranatunga.
    7. 1996 world cup is the only tournament in which both finalists despite being in the same group never faced each other in earlier stages of the tournament. Australia did not go to sri lanka for its pool game due to security reasons and sri lanka was given 2 default points
    8. Arvinda di silva is the most productive man of match player with 107 runs 3 wickets n 2 catches
    9. Sanath jayasurya is the least productive all rounder to win player of series award
    10. Only world cup final among the 4 final match appearances of Glen McGrath where he went wicketless
    11. Only 50 over world cup match till date in which sri lanka beat Australia
    12. Only World cup when India played at Eden Gardens Calcutta in 50 over world cup !!!!
    13. Only 50 over world cup in which West indies lost a semi final match
    14. 1996 was the last time West indies reached semi final stage in 50 over world cup
    15. Ind vs Sri Lanka semi final, only test or odi in history which was awarded due to rioting crowd !!
    16. Only World Cup in sub continent when India did not host the final match.
    17. Only World Cup final in which Glen McGrath and Shane warne went wicketless
    18. Only World cup where all semi finalists belonged to same group

Looking at the county championship scorecards in the 80's I'd see all these run machines like McEwan, Wessels, Cook, Barlow, Rice, Proctor & wonder why the selectors didn't pick them. Always the same answer. We nicked some but I was really looking forward to seeing these mysterious , previously banned cricketers. All with British names except the fantastically named Hansie Cronje. They put a caption up reading Wessel Cronje & I thought he had a twin.

@@Steveaustin007 Both Rice and Cook went on the short tour to India in late 91 and did not perform well. Despite the clamour from their fans at home, this had come a few years too late for them to still be effective to any extent at intl level. Peter Kirsten was a few years younger and was still able to be a valuable contriboutor for those vital first few years. Wessels was 34-35 so still had some good years left
