- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie reads her own delightfully feminist letter written in response to a (fictional) marriage proposal.
In 2007 an anthology of love letters was published titled Four Letter Word. One of the most striking contributions to it was by the great Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who in that same year won the Orange Prize for Fiction for Half of a Yellow Sun, her bestselling novel set during the Biafran war.

It wasn't until the end when I read the description that I discovered that it was a fictional response, from a book written by Ms. Adichie. I was initially disappointed, hoping that there really existed a young woman who would think of responding to a marriage proposal in such a wonderful, cheeky, gentle, loving way. But I quickly realized that the young woman was Chimamanda herself, and that made me happy.
Impeccable pronunciation. It shows speaking eloquently has little to do with accent but more to do with correct pronunciation. This is top notch.

Though this letter was written to Emeka, it nevertheless spoke to me like my girlfriend couldn't ever. It teased and cajoled, praised yet denied, seemed to decline yet sweetly, finally accepted a proposal with kindness and cheek.

It can change and may one day, nothing's wrong with that. The places she's lived in may cause that, and it's not something anyone should waist time fighting. I'm an African in Africa and I talk like that too, but if she one day doesn't anymore, is okay, no wahala.
Sometimes our accent changes a bit, subconsciously When we move to a new area or are around different regional dialects, we tend to mimic the sounds that we hear around us. This helps us to fit in. It's called bidialectalism and it's mostly subconscious.

Yep. Except with me, I proposed to my man. I am not one to go with tradition, we've been together for over 15 years now. Ours was great, nuts, done at a rock concert, I texted in my proposal over the main marquee stage during his favourite song. It's all about the details.
