We were stunned, when having been told that we would have a little wait for the chips, so talking to those to ladies who ran the place, we learnt they had worked in the Woolwich Arsenal, during second world war and they said if the air raid sirens went off they just kept working, no point in running, because if it got hit by a bomb, there were so many thousand tonnes of munitions, they would have been blown to smithereens. No point in running, so they just carried on. My respect for those old ladies went through the roof.
I live near Harehills, surprised you were not robbed by the "locals" while you were there, Mermaid is a great fish and chip shop that I use for take away only :D

I love how people in different areas of the UK call 'the bread cake here' different things, yet we all say a loaf of bread. Crazy that. To me its a barm cake. The chip, fish, pea and curry butty is a classic or Northern Britain which should be celebrated across the world.
That’s more of a flatcake than anything else. Around here a flatcake is a full circle of bread, the diameter is the same as that bread cake’s largest dimension. It will fit a full breakfast without any of the ingredients sticking out of the edge.
