  • We treated ourselves to another dinghy. This time its a 59er, but it needs new sails which we cant buy that easily so we try something different
    Whats a 59er I hear you ask, why cant you just buy new sails and what did we get instead. All questions that will be answered in this film, but in short, have you heard of a 29erXX!
    We make these films just for fun, and we hope that you have enjoyed watching them however we have been asked on a couple of occasions now if we have a Patreon account. We don’t want to do that at this stage as we feel it would turn the channel into a business, and as we said at the beginning, this is all just for fun. However if you would like to support us and feel you could help contribute to the cost of making these films then you can do that via our PayPal account here. A big thank you to everyone that has already done this, its a great help.

    Well done again Ian. Your knowledge of dinghy sailing and the different types of dinghies you have sailed is impressive.

    I own 092. Best boat I've ever owned in 50 years of sailing! I don't agree with putting a trapeze on them, they were designed for super heavy (150kg+) crew weight- if you don't have that, you probably need to be sailing a B14/29er Also, I'm not convinced the mast will take the compression. Thanks for answering the question I had about whether 29er XX sails would fit! You'll find the performance around 10kts of breeze is stunning!

      Hi Roger
      Yup I think the class would have been better if it had just stayed as a hiking boat but as the class never took off I guess they felt they should try something. But at least for us the result is a boat that we want/can sail. Re the mast loading it makes no difference. The windward shrouds are taking all the loads from the boat and transferring them into the mast and then back into the boat. As I have attached the trapeze lines to the shroud attachment points the loading on the mast is broadly the same. OK we have some extra weight pulling down on the mast but then we have less weight overall loading up the rig. Might be different if we are jumping off waves or something and transferring shock loads through it but other wise I dont expect a problem.

    Such a shame the class died, a great design - top tip on keeping the old boats going with those sails.

    Having learnt to sail in Mirrors, MiniSails, Osprey, Enterprise and Javalin in the 60s your new fangled whize bang dinghies just make me feel old. The ETAP 24i is sportie enough ...
    Love to see Hannah and you fly her though.... ⛵ 👍

      Hi Sudo. Good to hear from you as ever and yes we will try and film her sailing at some point so you can see how she goes.

  • @ruaraidhmcdonald-walker9524

    Got to love dinghy sailing. No better way to develop feel: If you get it wrong, you’re in the drink!!
    Remember that feeling well pitchpoling a 400 at full chat…. Shoulda beared away quicker, crew did yell gust…. Great fun.
    As you say, these bigger beasties are much better for older bodies and knees….
    Is it a self-deploying sjngle line asymmetric spinnaker like the RS?

    I'm always surprised high performance sports boats never really took off in the UK like in Australia or New Zealand. I'm not talking about J70s, J80s, the 1720s which are not really sports boats in many people's opinion. The bigger sports boats like Ultra 30s that are heavy and require big crews. SB20s were the closest example but still lacked the high performance of many of the Australian and NZ boats such as the designs by Alan Carwadine, Steve Thompson, Rob Shaw, Dan Leach etc. However Melges 24s are still great sports boats and now the VX1s are starting to catch on. You may want to check them out.

      Hi james. I agree we have such a strong dinghy scene in the UK you would think that the next logical progression would be into sports boats.

    • @laser4398
      @laser4398 Před 2 lety +1

      I've sailed the SB20 and it has a bulb keel. It really picks up weed. Not a problem with a Flying Fifteen (which is 20ft), so you'd think the designers would have picked up on that. But here's another problem with sports boats - they need at least a metre and a half to launch. That's no fun unless you have a slipway and a pontoon. There are not many dinghy clubs with those sort of facilities. I do feel sorry for the Flying Fifteen crews, in many places they have to wade up to their neck to get the boat off the trailer even if they have a pontoon to at least tie up to before sailing.

    Closest I ever got was a lightning, which, actually is not all that close. Why I didn’t go forward with racing had to do with my stupidity and chasing young ladies. Which is another sign of my stupidity.

    A lot more luff curve on the 29XX mainsail, so presumably needs a lot more mast bend than the 59er, although it looks like you have plenty already, so far as we can tell from the video.

      @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Tony, Yup the rig needed a bit of a tweak but to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if that wasnt the shape the old sail should have been any way!

    I’ll prob never own a 49’er or any of them but soo pleased I watched this. I learned what a clew board was for 😁. I have a new to me (British) Hunter Pilot 27 with self tackling jib, maiden sail & race was this weekend and the close hauled flapping jib l leech with no jib track and cars to adjust was disappointing, but self tackling is amazingly simple. Felt I lost too much speed in the turns thou so any technique tips appreciated! Also solutions to backing the jib while tacking, and hove-to with a self tacker would be appreciated! And I think you deserve that spinnaker Cheers again, David.

    • @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily
      @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi David. Yup hove to with a self tacker is a pain, just lashing it to one side then tacking onto it is the only easy way. You just have to do it in such a way that you can release it again if you have to, like a separate line taken around a winch or similar.

    Hi Ian, been a while since i commented on your content..... initially i went to your community page, but then realised that comments were again possible on your videos :)
    Enjoyed your recent bank holiday 'motoring' video, but as you say, sometimes it has to be done and it still can be enjoyed to be out on the water however that is..... so it was great to see you enjoy your weekend up on the 'Crouch'
    Somewhat difficult times for myself, having fled Ukraine in early March, now back doing some work in Kent to occupy my time and mind, wife remains there with family but an obviously worrying time.....
    The 49er looks great, even with the XX rig, i am sure it will be an improvement on the 'shrunk' old sails and what you might do to correct a few issues with the new sails....
    Would be great to watch you out on the medway during the season....
    Regards
    Ray.

    Really interesting video Ian. With 29ers and 49er in our family fleet, I have often wondered what the 59er is like. I've never seen one so its interesting to see the boat and how you have added a trapeze. I'm left wanting you to move the gooseneck and buy a length of aluminium tube to make a longer ganv (can't be hard) :-)

      @SailingwiththeFoxwellFamily  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Simon. Yup I couldnt stand the creases either so Ive already done it. Not sure it will have made much difference when there was some pressure in the sail but I feel better for doing it :-)
