- Fitness buff Paul Zimmerman’s painful shoulder arthritis was hindering his workouts and keeping him awake at night. He researched orthopedic surgeons from New York City to Boston, but found the world-class care he wanted only 35 miles from his Newport, RI, home. Dr. E. Scott Paxton, a shoulder replacement surgeon with the Lifespan Orthopedics Institute’s Total Joint Center at The Miriam Hospital, used the latest in technology, the stemless shoulder implant, to restore the baby boomer to a pain-free, active lifestyle.
Might need shoulder surgery.This video was very inspirational.Thank you
At 58 tore my labrum and rotator....at night began to have consistent pain, numbness, and tingling, and did not get a full night's sleep for over 4years. I decided against rotator cuff surgery for conservative PT. I took advil 1000mg and CBD for sleep every night...I too was a D1 athlete and weight trained...at 70, I had the reverse shoulder replacement (full stem) just 2 months ago and have a better range of motion than my "good shoulder", no pain, and can sleep through the night without any meds. I still have some numbness and tingling if I lay with direct pressure on the shoulder...I was told that it may never go away...the numbness and tingling with pressure....BUT, NO PAIN! PT now has me at 2-5# of curls, extensions, and rotational exercises......this was the best thing in my life and it was a game changer....I wish I had done this years ago.....pain is so debilitating. Best of luck to you all with this issue.....my advice is to find the right Dr.
I got a similar design stemless shoulder replacement at The University of Florida almost 3 weeks ago.
It's amazing and sorry I waited so long to have it.
What is the cost of a surgery like this? If you live in another country and come to the USA to have this done.
This is very encouraging.
I had this same surgery 4 months ago. Still struggling with muscle cramping and strength. I'm 59.
I can’t wait until I have my shoulder done with Arthrosurface by Dr. Zimmerman of Albany Bone and Joint this summer.
I had my shoulder replacement 3/29/22….life long in the gym, now 60, at 42 surgery for impingement (never issue before) one day throwing a football, the next day cant do it and still can’t! Do the math! At about 45-46 the DR now say arthritis, by 48 need a replacement, finally I do it, do the math! Now 11 weeks out been in PT since week 6, in the gym light weights for 1 week. Trust me, I have given rehab my FULL attention, I can raise my arm with pain to parallel to the ground but it’s a strain……at rest no pain, but that was the case before surgery! Making very slow progress in range of motion……I see lots of these Doctor sponsored video and it’s really amazing the miracles out there! I’m NOT your overly optimistic guy--I don’t like sugar coating. At this point I’m really wondering how much better this will get…..again, hopeful but not optimistic…..only thing certain is I WILL do my part. Good luck to you all!
Did you have a total shoulder replacement or a partial shoulder replacement aka "ream & run"? Who did your surgery? Was it the doctor on this video?
I had a total shoulder replacement Nov. 1, 2021, and if that's what you had, I think that's the difference. I was supposed to have a stemless, but because I'm allergic to nickel and they didn't have any stemless that were nickel free. I'm 49, pretty much the only thing I can do after over a year is machine pilates. Rowing hurt too much.
Remember the Facts!! Each and every human is different..I am 6 months post surgery..The residual pain is gone, but I am still limited on ROM, though still doing my therapy..And yes, I still have cramping-spasms..Can't give up ❤🙏✝️
numbness and pain in the two fingers and a pain in the wrist nerve i had a operation of ulnar nerve palsy i did this to recover my pain
Well I'm 42 and on my 3rd week out of surgery , before the surgery I was in pain all the time at rest and the pain got worse with activitie, just walking would aggivate it to a point were I would suffer throughout the day. Right now the only pain I've had to deal with is first thing in the morning the muscles in the shoulder spasm and icing the shoulder helps, I haven't needed to take a pain pill since the second week out from surgery.
I enjoyed weightlifting and have lifted weights since my freshman year in high school so I get that I'll be limited to lifting no more than 15 pounds but at this point in my life I think it's probably best to focus on joint health and flexibility than to lifting heavy again.
You definitely can lift more than 15lbs for sure
3 months? Wow
I’d like to know how old this gentleman is or was when he had the surgery? I’m 62 and still a LEO.
What if you have no rotator cuff unrepairable from accident?? ..
I had orthscopic surgery had 3 muscles repaired and a ballon put in the shoulder has now started coming out of socket due to detoration of ballon and could not attach the rotator cuff.
My Kaiser doctor said i need a new shoulder. Basically he claims ill never lift more than 15 lbs again. As a 53 year old who still lifts it was crushing. I have to live with the pain.
Look into a ream and run
@@bossmanham Thx, for now I'm going to live in pain. I can't give up gym
@@JuicedMoose The ream and run is designed so that you can return to doing the things you did before the shoulder replacement
Still very cautious on normalcy since shoulder replacement surgery
Does it only last 10 years?
Was this a ream and run procedure?
Yes it was a ream and run
Push ups wow
I needed total shoulder replacementAfter surgerie I'm dealing with the worst pain ever how long does that pain last
I've had bad pain since 2013, the last few months have been severe, now I'm waiting on a full replacement first on my right hand side..
@@musclefox223 sounds like me, the pain sucks. Good luck to you.
This guy needs to incorporate regular pilates sessions into his workout regime to keep arthritis at bay and heal the shoulder
Do you; he's in his 70s, makes him happy.
What about powerlifters? can a powerlifter get back to lifting real heavy loads post surgery? given they have done all the necessary PT of course
Google ream and run. Having mine done next month.
@@dkarlsberg how did your R&R go? Did Dr Paxton do your R&R?
@@gymrat974 Dr carofino virgina Beach. 8 months in. 90% strength pulling. 60% pushing. Zero regrets. Almost no pain at all.
@@dkarlsberg WOW that's awesome! I haven't got mine yet but I really need to just do it. My doc is the doctor in this video.
@@dkarlsberg How are you doing now? almost 100%?
PLEASE can anyone tell me after surgery and rehab could i return to medium bodybuilding say 30k weights dumbells
Yes
This is absolute BS. I’m 49 years old and just had a shoulder replacement. I’m six months into my recovery and I’m in just as much pain as I was in before. They’ve done scans on 5 months post op and insist my surgery is a total success. I don’t even have the device with the stem and I’m restricted to 20 pounds for the rest of my life, I’m aware that’s what I signed on for but at the moment I can’t even lift 2 lbs. I’m younger than that guy and was extremely athletic before my surgery. Just about every surgeon in the country is going to say you’ll be limited to 20 pounds, But this guy is playing with 40lb Dumbbells?! I don’t believe it, this guy is an actor. I would Not recommend the surgery to anybody unless they’re over 60 and/or absolutely need it.
Wow, I'm 55 and going in for this tomorrow. This definitely isn't what I want to read, oh boy.........
Oh man that sucks. Who did your total shoulder replacement? Hopefully it will get better over time.
I am 2 weeks post-op now after a 'total reverse shoulder replacement' (55 yr old woman) and I'm afraid for you! What you're dealing with isn't right or normal! I'd get another opinion from a top notch surgeon asap! Did you have a revision or?? I ask because you said you don't even have a stem? I do know you shouldn't lift a lot of weight in the gym and it causes failure and revision for more men than woman but if 2 lbs and a lot of pain are where you're at, something is seriously wrong! Look into it please!!! I live in VT and chose the best surgeon we have based on his reputation and track record and I'm glad I did because I was scared to death of this surgery! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, it's breaking my heart...........I hope you find answers and a resolution! Keep me posted!
Update May 2022: I changed doctors and Physical Therapist and have most of my mobility. I can lift 12 pounds, 20 pounds is challenging and it will let me know it too. I still find it messed up that over a year later, it’s still sensitive. Finally started going back to the gym this month. I’ve been there three times so far and I’m taking it very slow! Light dumbbells and cardio.
Just for clarity I have the eclipse hardware. I’m curious as to how other people made out with their journey. Hope your recovery‘s are all going well!!!
@@gymrat974 I went to mass Brigham in Boston. The surgeon was Alqueza. I may have had better things to say about their office or the hospital if I were provided with answers rather than a back-pedaling rhetoric when my CT scan with ink die came back as a rotator cuff tear(i’ve never had rotator cuff issues in my life) The surgeon I received a second opinion from explained it that, an interval between tendons is created because the tendons are stretched apart where they need to get in and that’s where the ink leaked out which a radiologist views as a tear. Sorry if I butchered that explanation 🤣
If the original surgeons office chose to explain it properly rather than take a defensive stance I may have been willing to work with them. As for the hospital, from the time I woke up in recovery they were rude and rushed me out the door around 6 PM.
My wife and I had to drive two hours home.
Sorry for the lengthy answer but I like to give as much information as I can because I kind of wish someone shared their experiences with me prior. I’m doing a little better but I still regret having his surgery…
After getting a total shoulder replacement you will be limited on weight lifting. Less pain, but no bionic man.
What exactly do you mean by "limited"? Will I be able to lift weights or not? I mean I realize that lifting really heavy weights will probably not be possible. But I would like to be able to work out with moderate weights. Is that going to be possible and will it hurt the material used to replace the shoulder socket?
@@carllove3705 You will be able to workout, but never do overhead workout to don't damage the plastic glenoid and get another surgery.
You can work legs with heavy weights;
Arms with relative heavy weights;
Back with medium weights;
Chest with low weights;
Abs with heavy weights;
Should with very low weights.
Google ream and run. Having mine done next month.
@@5driedgrams if you get a regular total shoulder replacement you aren't supposed to lift heavy weights because it will wear the replacement down.
If you want to get back to an active lifestyle like lifting heavy weights than you are better off with a ream and run replacement surgery. The recovery is a little longer from what I've been told but once you heal and you get the okay from your Dr you should be good to go with weightlifting again.
@@dkarlsberg how did you make out with your ream and run? Where did you get it done, who was your doctor?
No body in Oklahoma will do this surgery they say due to its harder to get over the surgery.And I called about 10 doctors.They all told me the same.
