Glad no one was hurt and that the damage was minimal.
Once lightning hit my old house (back in 2007) and the smoke alarm went off for 3 mins straight and i was scared asf

THANKS so much for all the comments! Everything here is fine. Our electrial grid got minor damage and our gas line is damaged. I just THANK GOD we were home.
I would suggest rerouting the gas line so it is not in the proximity of the main grounding stick, and in a way that lightning cannot hit it easily.
I'm just glad that your vintage parts are still intact.

After watching this video, I'm glad your house didn't burn down from a direct lightning strike. The surge caused your breakers to trip. Never run a ground wire near a gas line or use it as a grounding rod. Best advice that I can say is make sure u get your breaker panel checked out after this. Could have internal damage. Been an electrician for close to 20 years.
Wow, just goes to show that a fire can start at anytime. It was a good thing that Andrew knew how to deal with the situation quickly before it escalated. Hope the insurance company can clean up the hole and other damage quickly!
I'm so glad you, your wife, and your home are safe. Just a thought... I was of the assumption that all gas and water plumbing is supposed to be bonded to the grounding pin/system unless the plumbing is non-metallic. Maybe that's just Minnesota code. But, under that scenario, the arc wouldn't have happened as the paths of conductivity would've been parallel. (If A is connected to B, B is connected to A.) Just something to consider to keep yourselves and your home safe during the storms of Summer.

Wow, glad everybody, and everything, is OK. Had lightning hit an auditorium I was in. Building was fine, just knocked out a video we were watching at the time (although audio kept going).

tip get a wireless security system and have it monitored they have wireless smoke detectors and wireless window and door contants just a though that help protect you if you are not home and fire starts alarm grid website has wireless alarm system and do it your self they also have a yotube channel where you can watch and learn how to on your own

Yes everything good :) Only damage is to the gas line, one of my light fixtures, and the ceiling.

+Diesel Ducy I'm so glad your and your wife are okay my dad's a Louisville firefighter and he would know exactly what would've happened and yeah your right if you hadn't been home the whole house would've burned down because a lightning strike fire works really fast like my dad was dispatched to a lightning fire and the house was demolished five minutes after the strike happened does your wife not like you filming videos or something and what an awkward time for Nick to call

you should install smoke detectors in all rooms of your home including the basement rooms glad your ok
he needs commercial fire alarms two horn strobes on basement two on ground floor and two on second floor with remote strobes on all other rooms and plus he needs a dialer so when the alarm goes off it auto calls the fire department.
