In the Falcon's Kingdom - Racing Pigeons at Extreme Altitude

  • The peregrine falcon pushes my racing pigeons very high in the sky in his kingdom where he is a hunting expert. Then he selects the pigeons one by one in individual chases and tests their agility and intelligence.
    I am told often that it is very unusual for racing pigeons as a breed to go so high in the sky and I am asked why they do that. I don't know, but I like it. The only thing I do is to select pigeons that fly a lot even with birds of prey around, I like birds with a natural desire to fly. I don't keep or breed from the ones that avoid flying when there are attacks.

    Please watch on a computer in full screen. On a phone you'll probably waste your time. At least try to watch in 4K. The falcon chased the pigeons very high in the sky, very hard to film and focus. I keep getting questions if I have high flying breeds genetics in my pigeons: no, they are all from my racing pigeons that raced at the club up to 1000 Km.

    Do your birds have a hard time going back out and flying after they get attacked by the falcon? I’ve had lots of falcon problems the last 2 years. Curious if you do anything different? Or anything you recommend? I let them out and 10-15 mins later falcon comes and chases them. Spooks them. Especially the young birds .

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety +2

      Select for the ones that keep flying and aren't easily impressed. Also feeding is important, they must be very light. The day when I filmed this the falcon attacked in the first 2 minutes after I released them.

    I hope your heros never been caught

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety +2

      I have plenty of zoom but can't use it properly for a few reasons. The more you zoom the harder it becomes to focus and they will get blurred often. Being larger in the frame at the speed they have it is easier to lose them out of the frame as soon as they suddenly change direction and once lost, it is very hard to find them again at that speed. Also you can hardly see them on the viewfinder or LCD of the camera especially in sunny weather so you have to just approximate where they are and move the camera accordingly. If you know samples of videos filming birds at extreme height with extreme speed please let me know, I always try to improve.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety +2

      Even if I could, I wouldn't use full zoom because you lose the opportunity to understand the full scene and the strategy of the birds... there is plenty detail of the birds in other kinds of videos. A bit more zoom would help but not too much.

    Since you have seen a lot of attacks from the wild peregrine falcons and goshawks, can you tell me who of the two is faster in level flight in your opinion? Racing pigeons are among the fastest level fliers and it seems that the peregrine falcon is able to to catch up even if the distance between him and the pigeon is greater. I haven't seen goshawks catching up if the distance is relatively big?
    Since I"m a falconer, I have both, the peregrines and the goshawks and I have measured their speed in level flight with the Gps telemetry, in conditions without the help of the wind. On average the peregrines were about 20 percent faster in level flight, but I was wandering if the same thing applies to the wild birds?
    And one more thing, who is more successful in catching the pigeons?
    Thanks!

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety

      Interesting stuff. The hawk is more successful at the ground level and the falcon up in the sky. In level flight the falcon is often as fast as the pigeon, it depends on the weight and body type of the pigeon (there are small or large, fat or light pigeons). I filmed such a level flight, the falcon was after a small light pigeon, see the video on this channel "Falcon Hunting Racing Pigeon High Up in the Sky".

    Great video like always ... how of regular do you see the falcon there ? And does the falcon live you alone at some point of the year?

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety +1

      During winter the falcon appears almost daily... sometimes it takes a break for a few days if it is warmer. It calms down in spring after all the fanciers release their pigeons (I also release my club racing team in March when it gets warm)... in winter 99% of the fanciers keep their pigeons in the loft and we don't have many ferals here as prey. I had no falcon attacks in the loft area for the last few years in summer but I think it hits the young birds when ranging. But there are thousands of birds available as prey at that time of the year. My club mates say it attacks their birds in summer too. I think it saves mine for the winter as a backup. :)) Should be easier for you in the summer too, right? With falcons the worst time is when the hawk also attacks in the same time down at the loft... the pigeon hidden in the tree after the crazy falcon chase was lucky the hawk wasn't around that day.

    • @gothamsbirdman9500
      @gothamsbirdman9500 Před 3 lety

      @@Pigeonmaniacom same story for me winter time if I let them out early or late in the afternoon 90% chance falcons going after my birds if I let them out from 11am to 2pm I might get a break from March to June they will give a break but will see them once in while. Falcons ruins my flying.

      Lots of pigeon flyers here in New York think the cooper hawk is the worst but I don’t mind it ... cooper gets the birds up flying and they birds look to make sure the cooper not hiding for a ambush attack we’re when the falcons hits them they just want to land because they know the falcon has the upper hand flying.

Probably old school thinking but i will go with it this year. So many people pair the pigeons up to early i feel. I guess its what you like to race either long distance racing for the old birds or the darkness system for the young birds which im not a fan off. Thank you for your kind words about my dad. I would love to time in a pigeon from the longest race just for him this year.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety +2

      @@grahammoore6386 Totally agree, people pair the pigeons way too soon, some of them have the second batch of youngsters by now. Wow. I don't even think the youngsters grow at their full potential in such weather, no matter what loft we have. I'm more passionate abut nature than races and when I look into the nature right now everything is frozen and silent, in conservation mode. I would feel silly to push the puffy silent pigeons to mate in this freezing weather. But it will get warm really soon and then it will be hard to keep them from mating, just to have the perfect timing with the club schedule. Looking forward to let them mate on a sunny warm day, they look almost electric at that time, the loft explodes with happiness and cooing.

  • @grandpapeteswordsofwisdom7114

    If you fly your pigeons every day all year long they will get hawk smart. the hawk goes for the weaker ones and you dont want them anyway. the low flyers are easy prey for hawks. the hawks are too lazy to go after really high flyers. if you ar able to keep a flock of culls you can release them first as hawk bait and then release your valuable birds an hour later.

    • @Pigeonmaniacom
      @Pigeonmaniacom  Před 3 lety

      Yes, but this video is with the falcon which is a very different bird of prey compared to the hawk. However they both do natural selection, just that the falcon does a more severe selection.
