A Great Night Hot Tent Camping....Until the Unthinkable Happened and I got STRANDED !!!

- In this video, I head out solo with a canoe full of gear to go hot tent winter camping in a snow storm and test out my new Pomoly Hex Plus hot tent and Pomoly Dwellar wood stove. I paddled my canoe on a remote pond and found a beautiful campsite on the far end. After setting up the tent and getting a warm fire going in the wood stove I cooked an easy camping meal- Pizza dip! (try this if you haven't, it was so good). An overnight snow storm changed my plans. The pond ended up entirely FROZEN! I woke up hoping for snow but got more than I bargained for when the pond was covered in ice! It was frozen enough to where I couldn't break the ice and paddle out, but the ice was also not thick enough to walk across. I decided to make several trips around the pond back and forth from my vehicle, portaging my canoe and gear. I learned a lot from this quick trip when it comes to camping in winter. Be sure to have 2 ways out and make a plan for the worst case scenario. If i had a dry suit, I may have been more willing to attempt to break the ice and paddle across, but without one it was not worth the risk. I tend to learn lessons the hard way, but hopefully it's at least entertaining to watch and you can learn something from it. I can look back and laugh at it now.

I wouldn’t beat yourself up about the lake freezing and taking the whole thing too lightly. I’m sure I would have done the same thing. You had an unexpected scenario, you adapted to you situation in a safe way and came out of it. To me that’s partly one of the thrills of being outside and in nature. Top job fella! 10/10 for not going into a tail spin and just getting on with the job that needed to be done. Happy Christmas!

Just couldn’t resist another Backcountry Paddler film. What an amazing experience Mark. Yes I realise the lake had frozen over, and you had to haul all the gear back to the car but look on the positive side. The tent looked amazing as did the wood burning stove not to mention the food which also looked good (not as good as that steak though). Your making such wonderful films which you can look back on when you get to my age (74), and can relive these adventures. I wish I had been able to record such things in 4K. Great video Mark! Enjoyed it and had a good laugh. Yes, the pond can freeze over. A few things to note, it's small, shallow, and no current. So with below zero temps (C), it can easily freeze over night. If you were on a big deep lake, likely only the edges would have froze. That's why with late season trips, I also use a Royalex canoe to break through the ice. Most importantly with late season trips and freezing temps, think about an exit plan on land if the water freezes. You were lucky. And also consider snowfall. If it was a lot, you could also get stuck in there with your vehicle. So also consider a communication device. Otherwise great trip and learning opportunity. 🙌 Loved the pizza dip! Would definitely try it. Cheers

Thanks David! Truth is I'm still quite raw to doing all of this outdoor stuff! I didn't grow up doing it and I basically do everything alone so I'm bound to make mistakes, but I'm also cool with it. Great video. The intro was top notch. I love all of the interesting camera angles and audio overlaps. One of my first winter hiking tips is water freezes! Great adventure. Love that stove, better than the other model? I like that it doubles as a place to make food and boil water.

Wow, I am really shocked at how fast that pond froze! I would have expected it to start with a thinner layer over night that you could have pushed through; not a think hard covering! Live and learn. I will be even more worried about my late fall trips now; glad to be forewarned thought. Your new stove is beautiful! Nothing like the slow of the fire to add to the warmth of the heat alone. Good on you for making the video and sharing it despite the challenges; that's real life - it doesn't always work out!

Pizza dip looked great! Really nice tent and woodstove setup. That was a bummer about the pond freezing up, must have been pretty shallow water. We opted out of a trip last month because of a turn in the weather, and we don't have dry suits yet. When the water is that close to freezing it doesn't take long to succumb to hypothermia if something goes wrong. Nice video, thanks for sharing. Now the long wait for spring paddling. Safe travels!
That's why I didn't want to attempt to break through it with the canoe either. Not worth the risk of getting stuck in water where Hypothermia could set in quickly. I'm excited for Spring to get back out on the water again! And I'm glad to hear you made a good decision and didn't risk it. 👍

That snow coating the surface was the catalyst to the quick freeze. There was probably a heavy snowfall at one point.
So, how thick was it? Might have been able to ice-breaker through it, but that canoe looks a little too nice to be doing that.

Don't feel too bad. When I was a kid I decided to go winter camping. Hauled all my gear on an old sled. Easy going and fairly mild weather. Too mild. Overnight all the snow melted. I was in the woods with a sled full of gear. Pulled it home thru the mud.
Ugh yeah that doesn't sound fun pulling a sled through the mud!! I plan on doing my next winter camp with a pulk sled and this isn't something I really thought about... glad you commented Steve!

Dude...............I long for adventure in these videos. I love a little danger as opposed to a solo overnighter with a a meal. You did nothing wrong, but you handled the struggle like a champ. That's what I'm talkin' about. We don't need you to have all the perfect gear.....we just want to ride along with you!!

I had something similar happen to me in the Adirondacks by Moose River plains when I was deer hunting many many years ago. Bright and sunny 70’s in the daytime. When I got up 20’s and snow covered. Coffee with twigs never tasted so good 😀
That was rough. Nice setup, cool camp. The Weather Channel APP on your phone might help understanding the conditions you’re getting into. I’m all over the weather with several sources for my snowmobile info 😊❤️🇺🇸❄️☃️🛷🔥⛺️🌄

Hey Mark! Nice to see your tenting upgrades!! I have been looking at the hammock hot tent and the stove with the oven from Pomoly. They look like the best stuff out there. Glad you made it out without much trouble. Drysuits are a must if you are going to be paddling in the extreme shoulder seasons, I know from experience, ask sometime when we run into each other.
Totally agree! If I thought there was more risk I would have just stayed home seeing as I don't have a dry suit. Got a little extra exercise that's all. 💪🤣 I'm impressed with the quality from Pomoly. Top notch gear! The one with the oven would be awesome for camp cooking!!
@@BackcountryPaddler another thing that I learned was that not all dry bags are created equal! Some do not hold up when submerged! The best ones are ones with zip-lock security and the Blue Barrels are the ultimate for dry storage!
Good tip! I always question just how dry this particular bag would really keep my gear. Doesn't seem to fold and seal all that well..

Too late on to do anything but portage in to the lake and make three paddles across to take in gear in the dark.. In a gale.. Shit happens fast man, but you don't let it get to ya.. Good going, Mark. "Adapt and Overcome". Thumbs up on the pizza dip. Did you consider taking the canoe back across the pond and breaking ice with the paddle. I can't tell how thick the ice was, but it looked thin. In any case, you got yourself out of a pickle in good spirits.
Haha believe me when I say I wanted to and tried, but it was thick enough to not risk it. I was out there alone and if something happened and I went in it would be bad news... so I decided to take the difficult but safe route. 🙂 that pizza dip was good thanks for the reminder I need to make that again soon. So simple but so good!!!

You are a You Tuber and just made another great video. Your dinner dish looks delicious but boy would the acid reflux kill me the rest of the night. Looks like you went to the school of hard knocks trying to get out of there. Luckily it was just a small pond and you want miles into a remote location. Chalk it up as a learning experience.

I just felt so bad for you, I was holding my mouth in disbelief. I wanted so badly to reach in and help you. I felt your stress; I really did. My only suggestion for next time is to take an emergency beacon with you to summons help. You never know in these conditions. I pray that you continue making these AWESOME videos. I completely enjoyed this. Besides, with a gorgeous face like yours, It would be a shame not to see it anymore. hehehe. A retired woman from Texas.
I wasn't far enough out that it was a major concern where I'd need an emergency signal but it's always a good suggestion! I have one and plan to use it on more remote trips. I knew one way or another I could walk out of this situation. I'll keep trying to make videos! I can't do them as frequently as most can due to work and other circumstances but I love camping and filming it when I can! Glad you enjoy it!!

Definitely get yourself a stove..it's so nice to cook on and you can't beat having a fire inside your tent at night! That said, I actually want to try an overnighter in a 3 season tent with a Mr. Buddy heater. That or a car camping overnighter with one, just to try it out. This was on state forest land. Oh and I promise I won't be swearing in many videos, I'd like to not do it at all, but that moment was real. 👍
Wow. No, I would not have thought the pond would freeze so completely overnight… maybe a thin skim that you could hack or push through, but not so thick. What a ‘surprise’ . Thank you Vicki, you don't know how nice that is to hear! I don't know why that pan is so non-stick but it is.. hardly any cleanup at all, it all comes off clean. Just a standard bread pan from Walmart too.

Not sure how many miles but it didn't end up being too ridiculously far. The pizza dip is definitely a quick easy trip food. The queso dip I made in the Adirondacks was even better. 👍

Loving the conoe trips and the hot tent vids. We have a similar style of trips. Now I have to add the Adirondacks into canoe trip possibilities rather than just the backpacking that has already hit my radar. Thanks for introducing that option...

Maybe in northern Michigan. I'm also looking to add at least 2 other trips sprinkled in between somewhere... Maybe an ADK trip would fit well in the plans...

I live on a small lake and yeah, it can freeze up pretty fast if it’s calm and cold. I am curious if you tried to break it at all and how thick it was. Many times it won’t be very thick the first night, but that’s easy to say from my warm easy chair. Way to rally and take the lumps. I will definitely try the pizza dip on my next paddle! Cheers.
I tested it with my paddle and felt it was too thick to risk trying to get across and possibly getting stuck. Just wasn't worth the risk with being alone in my opinion. The pizza dip couldn't have been easier, give er a try and let me know how it was!

So, the ice was thick enough that I didn't want to risk getting stuck or falling in without a dry suit. Could I have? Maybe.. just preferred to play it safe.. thanks for watching it Dave. Always value your opinion!

That’s tough man. I’ve never had a freeze overnight that I couldn’t break through. Must have been really cold. That stove is awesome though. Nice job.
Out of curiosity do you have a dry suit or anything? My thinking was that it wasn't worth the risk to get back into that water and try to break my way across. It was also thicker than I imagined. Especially right near camp.
@@BackcountryPaddler no dry suit. I’ve broke through thinner ice with rocks and a limbed pole but I’ve never gotten in. If it’s too thick for a good size rock to break through you’ll have to bush wack out like you did though.
A part of me regrets not attempting it, but being alone I probably did the right thing. I did get myself and everything out though. I guess I'll never know if it was worth all the effort. Lol
@@BackcountryPaddler you said at the end that you need to see what you did wrong. You did nothing wrong. You went on a canoe trip, had some adversity and figured it out. Logan and I have said to each other that adversities make the trip sometimes. Those are the ones you’ll remember. Dont sweat it.
Love hearing that from a fellow tripper and one I love watching in particular! I honestly thought a lot of people would kinda scoff at this video, but instead I'm seeing a lot of people who have been in similar situations who love the honesty. Definitely feel compelled to keep showing it how it is!

Hey I appreciate it! A lot goes into camping and filming and my life's gotten really busy since this little trip. Had our first child, started a new job that takes up all my time and now a 2nd kiddo on the way. All good things though!

Haha, having a kid really does change things for sure. Best time to go is before or after black fly season. I'd suggest any time after June. If you want the absolute best time to see the foliage it's mid-late September. It's stunning!

There's a lot from that morning I didn't show because I stopped filming really. I was focused on getting out of there and my GoPro had broken too. It's questionable as to whether I could have broken through the ice as I paddled across the pond but without a dry suit I didn't think it was worth the risk, especially being alone. Sorry that it froze overnight for you. I honestly wouldn't have thought it would freeze solid that quickly. Luckily you were close enough to your car. The canoe trails here are remote and no cellphone service so it would've been a nightmare.

Curious do you have experience with canoe barrels vs big portage pack. Barrels seem to really help keep everything dry. I'm not sure yet
I have never used a barrel but have heard good things about them. I do like my waterproof dry bags. They're water tight, light and keep everything nice and dry. I use both an EarthPak and a SealLine.
I had a tent with pole in the middle. It was ok for a while but that pole got old. Didn't like it.
Why don't any of these hot tents have a floor? Is it because of the stove?
I get ya about the center pole, I'm not big on that either. I prefer a free standing tent with a floor. Your right, they either are floorless or have a cutout for the stove. I use a big tarp as sort of a floor but it's not the same.
No much of a winter fan, but that does look enjoyable.
It definitely can be if you have enough wood and don't make silly mistakes like I tend to do! 😆

Awesome video - thanks for sharing. I would not have expected the pond to freeze! I would have liked to see you try and throw a rock or two at the ice to see how thick or thin it was. I could not help but think maybe you could have broken through the ice. Even having to chip away at it as you go could have been better than all those trips. Thankfully you had a trail to walk and get out instead of being miles and miles from your car. I will never forget island camping off the coast of Maine as a teenager. We beached our skiff on the back side of an island and went into the forest to explore. Came back maybe an hour later and the tide had gone so far out there was no way to get the boat back into water. We had to wait the full tide cycle to get off the beach. Thankfully we were camping on the other side of the same island and it was more embarrassing than anything else. Imagine if we were exploring a different island we were NOT camping on and had no food or water etc... and had to wait out a 12 hour tide cycle with no food or water!!
12 hours without food! I'd die! 😅
I wish I had video'd it but if I recall I tried breaking the ice with a log and it was too thick. There's no way I was paddling across. To me it wasn't worth the risk of it being too thick, struggling and falling in.
I`ve had this happen But I just paddled through the ice ,for me it was`nt more than 1/2 in so broke up easy
I considered it, believe me, but it was too thick and wasn't worth the risk (to me) if I had gotten stuck at any point or fell in without a dry suit. Thanks for watching and happy new years John!
What Pond ? adks? Water freezes fast once at critical temp esp. without wind.
Another lesson learned after the fact! I'll be wiser for it next time and backpack in rather than canoe at this time of year if the pond or lake has a possibility of freezing!
Rule #1 of any outdoor adventure: Don’t be greedy. As soon as temps are below freezing at night, my canoe trips are done for the year.
Believe me, I learned my lesson! 😆 I hope someone else watches this and learns from it too.

Great idea.. I am actually quite surprised at how non-stick these little Walmart bread pans are. Almost no cleanup. But I bet it won't last, so eventually I'll use foil.. good call 👍

How do I start winter camping? Are there any resources that you could recommend? Websites, books, groups of people etc.
I guess there are two things: learning how to do it and then finding people/maybe some club that I could participate with? I think that it might be a good idea to go with experienced people at least at the beginning of my learning curve.
Going with someone who's done it before is highly advised! Go in cold weather but not something THIS cold to start. Kevin Callan has some great books on winter camping. Check him out for sure! Also feel free to message me on Instagram I'd be happy to help talk you through some things.
I did know a pond could freeze over night. I was camping as a boy scout some years ago. That's the first time I saw it. That have being said, why would you have not back loaded your canoe, so the front is out of the water just a bit. Use your cane as an ice breaker. Just take it up on the ice nice and slow and let your weight
If I ever encounter this again I may be more willing to try it honestly. Without a dry suit and with nobody else around I personally didn't think it was smart to get into the ice and attempt it. Believe me, I suffered for carrying everything out but I made it. 😁👍
Agreed safety first, 👍. The temp of the water from water to frozen is only a few degrees at that moment. If u had gone into the water on either day u would have been in real trouble. I am sorry u suffered but made my day, I'm glad I'm not the only one doing some questionable things. Thanks for sharing 👍 great video

Hi Don, I did.. just not on camera. I wish i had filmed more that motion but it wasn't my priority (and my GoPro broke the night prior). The ice was thick enough that I didn't want to attempt paddling through it. Had I tried and gotten stuck somewhere then what? That was my thinking at least. Could I have gotten through, maybe. But I carried everything out and made it out safe that way.
