I think he means calibre of players. If the centre halves they signed were John Terry and Thiago silva at that time he wouldn’t have said that. He obviously didn’t mean centre halves playing as strikers

Man Utd didn't sell Tevez, he joined them on loan from West-Ham - they attempted to sign him but he refused the deal and went to City instead.
Part of the reason for this was commitment - Tevez felt slighted by Man Utd signing Berbatov before finalising his transfer.

These are just bad examples given off the top of his head. Reality remains United sold Ronaldo & Tevez that summer & replaced them with Valencia, Obertan & Michael Owen.
Rooney had a very valid point of the ambition being shown & history has proven him right to be concerned.

Can you all just use your brains for 1 second? He's obliviously talking about a long process here, not one afternoon. The club sold CR and Tevez in 09 and didn't replace them with the same quality over the next few windows. Rooney put in his transfer request in 2011 IIRC.. it all lines up. Even if it didn't, it's been over a decade, finer details can be fuzzy.

Replacements in football actually don’t exist, a player that gets directly replaced with another player honing the same attributes and scoring rate nearly never happens lmfao. It’s always later on when the club finds something new, but obviously different, that’s the real “replacement” in football. It’s never directly same position next season boom takes off. Even though it is attempted every time by every club. 🤣
