  • So many of you think that you should set the sole of the club flat or flush with the ground at address; this creates a domino effect in the wrong direction of poor posture, poor contact, poor direction, and balance! Don’t put up with it! Once you understand how the DYNAMIC ASPECT OF THE SWING WORKS, YOU WILL UNDERSTAND HOW TO SOLE THE CLUB AT ADDRESS!

    This is one of the best golf instructors on CZcams and it’s not even close. I’ve been following his instruction over the past 4-5 months and I’ve taken 10+ strokes off my game. I get so many compliments on my swing every time I hit the course. Grip, chipping, tempo, you name it he’s got it. Shawn and Team thanks sooo much. That is the biggest trap in the game; to be static at address with the ball instead of feeling dynamically engaged to collect the ball from where it and releasing it into the flight you want it to go to the target with.

    First off, Okay! Holy crap Shawn!
    I have been watching a ton of your videos and it has helped me hit my irons faster, longer, harder with more consistency (now i just need my distance control to adjust for the newfound distance).
    But this video, THIS VIDEO, was an ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER for me. I was setting up with the sole of my club flat with the ground (or maybe even more towards the toe on the ground).
    I just hit the range for the past hour, hit about 80 balls. Once i dialed in the feel of dropping my hands lower and lifting the toe of the club up at address, the change in my swings was unfathomable!
    Especially on my 5 wood, 3 wood and driver. I cant even remember the last time I even wanted to hit my driver. I would top it, chunk it, duff it, whatever. Even when I got decent contact it would go maybe 10-15 feet in the air, carry maybe 150-175 most times and run out to maybe 225.
    Today at the range, I was CONSISTENTLY carrying my drives 250y plus. The ball flight was exactly what i was looking for too. No actual data from a launch monitor but the flight was easily 90-100ft high. WAY better than my normal 15-30 feet high. The set up has brought my ball flight back to a bit more of a fade than I would like but I can work that out fairly easily (I hope).
    Was carrying my 3 and 5 woods around 200-220 pretty consistently as well. With numbers carrying down as expected from 4 iron to SW.
    I know this video is already over a year old but, my word, this video was a game changer for me today.
    You are an absolute gem of a teach Shawn!

    Finally someone says it. This mistake caused me to lose my whole swing the whole of 2021. I couldn’t even get to the ball nor could I even make contact with it. Setting up with bottom of the iron flat or even heel slightly up caused me to have very high hands…during the backswing it was causing me to readjust which completely ruined my golf swing for a whole year that I ended up quitting for nearly a year. Everyone just kept telling me I’m not shifting my weight properly and I know that wasn’t it because what felt wrong was my arms. When I came back I made this change on my own after after experimentation and the swing almost seemed natural, more like my old swing, no one was catching it though, they just kept saying shift your weight shift your weight shift your weight. This small stupid little fix literally fixed 1 years worth of headaches.

    I've been watching you for a year or so and I struggled with the super strong grip,I now understand why and the reason for me is because I'm standing to upright almost straight, back issues I guess but I'm good now and still standing up right, habits I guess. I even got some ping g25 irons that are green dot and still blocking to the right. Like a baby fade,always missing the green on the right and short, I've lost lots of distance this year at 71. I did manage to get get my cap down to a 9 from the white tees , in the summer months but now back to a 12 cap . I live in abbotsford BC where we play almost all year round and I played over 200 rounds a year out in royalwood in chilliwack BC. But going back to the super strong grip when I do that I hooked the crap with my irons we are talking left of left hahaha, but now I understand the posture issue and lowering of my body and hands, I will continue to work on this and I will work also on staying behind with the body tilting back and not lunching like obviously I'm doing now trying to keep it straight. My drive's are always in the middle at under 200 like landing at 180 my golfing buddies call me buntman lol. I play with a friend that hits a 100 yards or more than myself and he's a +1 cap ,
    So you see my dilemma in wanting more length and getting on the green so I can putt which I do well. Shawn thanks for sharing and listening to my wows Harvey Buntman

    Great Video - got a question as my current swing high hands in setup, and sole completely on the ground and grip bottom pointing way above my belt bucket - but then WHILE impact my hands are way more down (also my hole body and head more than compared to setup) and therefor the shaft is more shallow and while this pushing the clubbed into the ball and I am hitting with heel / shanks etc..
    So i am wondering if that high hands COULD - in this case - leads to heel strikes although you are showing that tow down at setup is probably more a toey hit in impact...

    This is why lie angle is so important in making sure your clubs fit you. You can buy an impact board for around $10, and it’s worth that just to have one on hand so you can check it occasionally. I’ve played the game for 65 years, and I learned the hard way that lie angle is absolutely critical for your iron game. If your irons are too upright for you, the heel will dig in and you’ll hit everything left (for a right-hander). If they’re too flat, the toe will dig in and you’ll hit everything right. Take it from an experienced old man, make sure your lie angle is correct before even starting to work on your golf swing.

    How do you know if your clubs need lengthened? I’ve noticed at 6’3 a lot of the time my hands look too low. Is that because of lie angle or shaft length and should I look into it or just hold the club more straight up and down.

    I have known this for years but I really think it exposes the need to have a fitting to suit one's swing. If one uses a more Moe Norman. Little Mo , Bryson, or Hogan swing stance then they will need a more upright clubhead to account for this downward force in the downswing. Then do we also have to examine the shallowing of the club on the downswing and see how this affects the lie? These boards are readily available and as always the proof is in the pudding. Are you getting the results you want?

    Toe up on driver too?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety

      Just don’t try to keep it flat; you take your dynamic posture, you pre-deploy the arm-club unit to the dynamic arc you are going to be delivering with and bring this to the ball.

    How often should one get their irons checked and adjusted with the board?

    Hi Shawn - I’m a premium member as well and love the content. I just noticed my irons are flat on the ground and I hit them pretty solid. When I put the toe up just slightly I feel much more hunched over and I hit a couple of good ones but also hit 2 6 irons in a row off the neck and badly skulled them left (I’m a lefty). Any advise? - thanks

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety

      Hey Brian! It is not about the sole of club being raised; it is about not trying to keep it flat. If you feel your posture is solid and allowing you to deliver through the ball towards the target with flush contact, DON’T TRY TO FIX WHAT IS NOT BROKEN!! 😀👍

    what about the way Bryson DeChambeau swings the same plane swing and what about the same length clubs????

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety

      What makes him different is the fact he is delivering through the ball and not at the ball; 99% of golfers who set up the way I show in this video are thinking of matching their set up with how the club sits and being static with the ball and then get ready to hit the ball as their target.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety

      And one length is fine; works very well; see the videos I did for that!

    So from a technical physics reaction, should the amount of toe raise at address change with each club as the physical club speed changes the amount ofdroop of the club head?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety +2

      The key here is to not try to sole it flat; each club has a different length and ALSO A DIFFERENT LIE; take a look at the specs page of any iron model and you will see the lies get more upright as the shaft lengths get shorter.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety +1

      And, the prep to each shaft before assembly; each shaft gets tipped (trimmed from the bottom) and then cut from the top (butt of shaft) according to the club head’s weight; as the clubs get shorter, their head weight is heavier...

      Club design should take care of this physical phenomenon, so the answer is NO.

  • @bdyt
    @bdyt Před 3 lety +1

    I don't see how the shaft bends the way you show at the beginning of the video during the unloading of the shaft when it comes through impact. If you swing it like an axe I can see the head/shaft bend that way. When you see slow motion of swings the shaft is loaded the other way. That's the lag tension you want for more speed through impact no?

    I fail to understand how you get the club in the slot from such a steep backswing. I mean, it's completely vertical 🤷‍♂️

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety +1

      What you are missing is how human anatomy shallows out the club in the downswing so naturally without thinking when YOU ARE DELIVERING A NICE THROW TO THE DIRECTION OF FLIGHT! Look at how a baseball player sjallows out the bat as he commits to a pitch!

  • @brewsterblockgoogle
    @brewsterblockgoogle Před 3 lety +1

    I get that with the heel flat it ruins your grip and posture forcing you to be more upright, but you don't explain how, when you bend over more with the toe up. It's going to magically flatten at impact. Why won't the toe still be up?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  Před 3 lety

      Because of all the G-forces in the swing that make the shaft bow when the toe of club pulls down on it; I say it in the video but it’s hard to absorb 100% of anything the first time watching😝

    I must be the only person playing golf that goes against this teaching. After playing this game for about 30 years I was encouraged to get “fitted” for some game improvement shafts. This was before all the high tech equipment but not before the marking board. After a series of trial and error it was determined that the shafts that Ping had in my new irons was way too stiff for anyone even John Daly. After my new shafts were put in I was put on the marking board.

    Totally disagree. Laying the club flat solved a slice for me. Toe up, slice city. I played minor league ball and semi-pro for 25 years. The biggest detriment my golf swing is my "baseball" swing. Bad analogy. I stopped golfing, very rarely anyway, because one game (baseball) does not help the other(golf). BUT I will remember to take a piece of plywood out on the course and hit off of it instead of the ground.
