      Very influenced by (and friend of) George Brassens, apparently.

      @@digitig Indeed he was. His guitar style and songs like this owed a lot to him, and Jake was first to say so. A couple of his songs (Gorilla was one) are Jakes's translations of Brassens songs, and the Frenchman visited him in England.

    The Yorkshire Jacques Brel. Very underrated and under appreciated. Probably influenced the young Victoria Wood.

    Thanks for uploading this Gem. I remember watching him on That's Life but really didn't understand the humour as a Naive 12 year old.When I reached 6th Form in a Boys Catholic School The Head teacher gave the 6th Form a good old telling off for not singing in Assembly and a bad example to the younger boys. The Following day we all sang as loud as possible in the style of Jake Thackray. It was absolutely hilarious and stunned the Head to comment "I'm not sure what was going on today but at least you all sang". Happy Days.

    lovely, lovely!! So nice to SEE him perform it, as opposed to just listening to the recording ~ the last line gets me every time, even though I know it's ... coming!

    one of my absolute favourites and its great to watch him perform it as I, probably like many others, have only heard it on his Live album, thanks very much for uploading. Imagine Jake just..coming to your local school to play??

      I think they booked him :-) He did the tour of folks clubs in the day. I remember seeing him at a folk club in a local pub.

    • @deluxedjsireland224

      ah I see. I thought he'd quietly retired from touring or being 'a real bloody Archie Rice' by the 80s and I was mixing this appearance up with his apparently impromptu performances in his locality later in life. I'd have loved to see him at a folk club, I'm very jealous. My Dad and Uncle were a folk duo in the early 70s and included some Jake songs in their repertoire (I even remember them as a young child rehearsing The Castleford Ladies Magic Circle). To see him live at any point in his life would have been incredible.@@jakethackrayunseen1024

    Love that this was recorded in a Catholic School in Birmingham in 1968.
    I was born in Birmingham in 1968, and as being raised a Catholic, I almost went to this school, but drew the raffle ticket for Bishop Challoner's instead.

    Are you sure this is '68?...I ask because he would have only been 30 yrs. old at the time.

      I got the titles wrong in the video (discussed on track 11) the description above is correct 1986.

      I thought exactly the same. It looks more like 1980s to me

    Which year was this?

    • @jakethackrayunseen1024
      @jakethackrayunseen1024  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately, the title sequence shows the year as 1968, while the end credits, correctly, as 1986. Haven't found a way to change the video without loosing all the nice comments.
