10 minutes ago I had the intellect of a prehistoric primate. Now I can solve the mysteries of quantum computing.
I've had this exact kind of setup for a few years now, but it's a pity we have to hack through it so much like this to get it working. I often get glitches with it, losing HDMI sound, display reverting to HDMI on the receiver, or the sound taking a few seconds to come come back after pausing it.
It's a pity Nvidia and Microsoft don't acknowledge this kind of setup, at least then there'd be a proper interface and some bug fixing, etc.
I also keep my optical connector connected, and I just switch to it whenever the HDMI solution fails.
But I think it's definitely the best way that I've come across to get Atmos with a displayport setup.
I just got a new 4k monitor, with HDR, but it only has DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 so I'm back tweaking this setup again. The holy grail is HDR, Atmos, 4k, 60hz, (HAFS) but HDMI 2.0 doesn't have enough bandwidth for this. And the annoying thing is that lots of games support this, but the manufacturers quietly ignore the fact that you have to hack your way through the setup to accomplish it.
omg i'm glad I found this. I probably would have figured it out, but this way I know for sure it works before I buy a DP cable xD
wasn't sure if could run a DP and HDMI off my GPU at the same time and have the audio\video the way I wanted .

After doing many experiments & tests, there are a few conditions:
When you connect the receiver to the HDMI port of the video card, (at least with NVidia) do NOT install the sound drivers from the NVidia updates, it will mess with Windows' ability to detect your receiver.
Also, do not connect the HDMI out to the monitor from the receiver until after the receiver is detected (I suspect this is with a monitor that has speakers but best not to just to be safe).
Furthermore, if you wish to use the interface of the receiver through a monitor, just be sure to hook it up after Windows successfully detects your receiver. Then disconnect it before rebooting. At least in my case, 1/2 of the audio formats disappeared upon reboot.
Again, these problems with a monitor out from the receiver may just be because my monitor has speakers installed, I just wouldn't take that chance but your welcome to test it out on your own.
I know it's an unwieldy description but I don't know how to share this without thorough details.

I watched this video again, and I say this video needs to be seen by many. I also figured out my problem when it comes to streaming audio and surround sound. It can only be done with a Chromecast or Roku or smart TV or other streaming device. It is not possible to stream with just the computer.

I know you just said that, but I was letting author of the vid know his vid is really good vid. What he said about the handshake was really good too. I'm gonna try it and see how it works for me. Might get more fps since one connection will be direct to the TV.

When I think about it, it might not be necessary to have a direct connection to the TV because up to date receivers like mine have HDCP 2.2, which is supposed to support 1080p at I think 120fps (frames per second) and 4k @ 60fps and 2.3 is coming out more than likely for supporting 8K, which is gonna be insane 🤩🤩🤩
@@gundam0039 I don't think it's a HDCP 2.2 problem because I have a GPU that have HDCP 2.2 and streaming CZcams movies through it still doesn't have surround sound. I have RTX 2080ti.
@@HenryTheBoilermaker3rdYear I already said the problem of no surround sound was solved with a device designed 4 surround sound streaming like a smart TV or Chromecast or Roku, etc. I mentioned hdcp 2.2 + 2.3 for FPS (frames per second) reasons. That's why I mentioned 120fps for 2.2. Smooth accurate gaming is important.

okay a couple questions. you stated that there would be no loss in performance and that the graphics card wont recognize the receiver as a display, but in fact it does and the graphics card renders the pixels for the "ghost screen" which is demanding on your processing power when playing games in high refresh rates. and the mouse still goes off the screen if you have "extend these diplays" selected . you forgot to mention to also right click desktop, click "Display Settings" and under "Multiple Displays" set it to duplicate these displays. so some of the information you stated here is false. don't mislead people. edit : also most satellite speakers are limited range since most people will be connecting a 5.1 system that uses a subwoofer for handling the lower frequencies so when setting up the configuration of your speakers in windows through the guided setup you want to uncheck those boxes for full range speakers
Would a display port to HDMI converter cable work instead of just HDMI to the receiver from the PC?
Done exactly that with a DP to HDMI converter and the surround speakers are not working when I test them in the configure menu
The problem with HDMI is that it's hard to get 5.1 channels coming through it out of a PC. Integrated solutions mostly output only stereo and you need an APUs (doesn't work for CPUs). Discrete video cards with HDMI rarely pass through the 5.1 encoded DTS signal. At least mine didn't and I've seen others have the same experience. Discrete audio cards seem to be the only solution but most only do 5.1 through analog not optical SPDIF. I only found one audio card that can output DTS 5.1 and 7.1 through optical SPDIF and that is the Creative Sound Blaster Z SE. So SPDIF optical seems to be the best way to output surround sound which when compressed with AAC or AC3 is fine for the narrower bandwidth of SPDIF.
Can the same be done with a 5.1 sounds bar? In this case a Vizio sound bar.
I was wondering if this was possible. IE - Got three monitors using DP (surround). Connect the HDMI on video card to surround receiver for sound only - no HDMI from receiver to a tv or monitor.
Highest setting might produce some sound artifacts for some systems/games, possibly too slow to produce the sample rate or other issues. 48khz works always so far.

Everyone is just concerned about HDMI and TVs for PC they still expect you to use regular speakers wich usually wont have many connectivity options. Like you say, regular dolby is kind of dated, audio boards on MB wont have dolby licence, you have to patch drivers or get a sound card, and even if you do all that. Most monitors are display port as standard, most video cards have 3-4 display port and only 1 hdmi, so you have to buy extra hardware to try getting the audio signal out, monitors only gets a stereo 3.5 out, and if they start to include optical out, or hdmi arc, prices are going to raise. I almost returned a 5.1 soundbar because of how of a mess was trying to set it up (since i wanted something to use with pc and consoles). And even when i managed to do it(patching drivers to activate dolby), the support for it is kind of meh. At least videos encoded in dolby works fine, but games usually do PCM only so you have to force the signal to be encoded to dolby, that means changing audio format on settings, or if you leave dolby 5.1 on all the time, you wont get sound out of the rear speakers with stereo signal, and the soundbar has a mode for that, but only if it detects lpcm

Do you get multichannel sound from games? What happens when playing a bluray movie or something with AC3/DTS/TrueHD/DTS-MA and windows plays any sound event or you play for a while a youtube or something like that?

Im using the graphics cart HDMI output for a projector that doesnt have a displayport input. Im aware that there are DisplayPort to HDMI Cables but I dont have one so I would need to buy it. Thanks a lot. It was very informative . One question. The newest Resident Evil 2 has an option to use dolby atmos. The problem that there is no Atmos decoding in any GPU . How did the developers expect us to get that atmos out of GPU that doesn't have that option. Or maybe the latest rtx 2080 ti has that atmos format. I just don't see any other way how people can play atmos in video games when there is no sound card exist with that ability .
You can see in the video he had atmos option. You need a receiver capable of decoding atmos.
Your GPU doesn't have anything to with Atmos. Any GPU with a HDMI or Displayport connection can work with atmos. To use Dolby Atmos in games you need....a av receiver that supports dolby atmos with it configured correctly or you can use any set of stereo headphones, and you need a source providing content specifically recorded for dolby atmos. Also for PC gaming you need to go into the microsoft store app and download and install dolby access and go through the setup process on your PC either for home theater or headphones. There is a free trial but it isn't free software.

In most cases you will make use of the HDMI connections and then in the audio properties you can just rename the output to whatever Brand/Model receiver you have.
One problem I have is windows 10 'display' settings either has use display 1 or display 2 only or span both. If I select span both, my mouse goes off screen. When I go into nvidia's settings, span surround is disabled. If I say use display 1 only, then the other sound option is grayed out.

Good video! But I'm still stuck.. My PC does not have an HDMI output only USB's an SPDiF out, and one DVi out which I'm using to connect to my PC monitor. I have a good quality surround system with plenty of HDMI's so is there any way to connect this to my PC? - I only want Audio btw
I have just the HDMI connected to my monitor, with an HDMI Extractor box in the middle, so I can output the audio from the PC & have it exit the Extractor via Optical as my amplifier only has an optical in.
Problem is, when I go to the supported formats properties, it only says 2 channel. But I think this is referring to the monitor speakers, which should be irrelevant right, as I’m interested in what the HDMI port can transmit & then veer off into the optical port...
I’ve spent so much time on trying to get this working, & still nothing... 😒

@@vinvan4237 I returned the extractor box & found a workaround using older Realtek drivers & a patch which restores multi channel support with Dolby/DTS. I can find the link with the steps if you want.

I have a rtx 2060, it has 1 hdmi port and 3 display port connections. Currently, i have a 240hz and 144hz monitor connected with display port, and i have a 55 inch tv connected with hdmi, so I am running a triple 'monitor' setup.
I purchased the YAMAHA RX-V385 5.1-Channel 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver with Bluetooth and don't see any display port connections to connect the monitor/graphics card to the receiver. I don't want to use HDMI to connect the monitors to the receiver as it will limit the hz on them.
Any tips if it's possible?
You HAVE to use HDMI from pc to the av receiver. It offers best audio quality, true 5.1, dts, dolby, etc.

What receiver do you suggest as a starter one with dts hd and Dolby HD support? I connect my pc to it, with hdmi at the moment, but I'm the future I ll buy a freesync display port monitor, will it work with amd rx580 card? At the moment I'm using a sound blaster Z with 3x 3.5mm output, but hard to find av receiver with rca input 🤐

I'm wondering if anyone with a 5.1 or above system is able to get true surround sound streaming videos through services like HBO NOW, the Google PlayStore, CZcams, CBS AllAccess, etc with just the PC graphics card via Hdmi to the receiver then to speakers or am I gonna have to get a Chromecast like I've been hearing? I get true 7.1 surround sound when playing video games or watching Blu-Rays, but only stereo quality audio when streaming HD 5.1 or above movies :( I don't think its fair that I have to introduce a middle man (Google Chromecast) into my system just to get true surround sound while streaming movies.

Got a Denon AVR S720W. It has DTSX,Dolby Surround & Dolby Atmos. Yet under play back manager under Denon's properties encoded formats it does not list atmos. DTS Audio,Dolby Digital Plus & Dolby Digital. No sure why ?.

Have you tried playing something encoded in Atmos? I have an Onkyo receiver and I never get any option to select Atmos, however once I'm playing from an atmos source, the receiver displays Dolby Atmos when I try changing the sound format.

The second video out is not really video at all, so you won't lose any quality on your main display. The presenter indicates this: no handshake from a video display = no actual video sent. The GPU gets only an audio handshake from the AV receiver, so it just sends audio.

hi i'm connecting to my TV, and passing through to surround sound through ARC, this works well with DTS and Dolby digital content, but doesn't seam to work during games also looking at my sound settings on my PC, Max supported channels=2 and wont gave me an option for 5.1. Any ideas.
My TV is LG UK6300

My receiver has no hdmi input. Only optical spdif input and one hdmi output.

Judging by your available ports, your system would be 5.1 max. Therefore your Optical cable would suffice. Connect your HDMI from your PC to your TV, then connect your optical cable from the output on the TV to the input on the receiver. Then go to your TV settings, audio options and select audio from an external device.
@@RealMangaAddict But SPDIF quality will be pretty subpar due to bandwidth limitations. It can technically send 5.1, but th resulting sound might not be very good.

That receiver looks ollllllllllld, but you can connect an optical cable from your motherboard board, sound card (if you have one), or graphics card (if your card has an optical port). Note: optical supports only 5.1 surround sound. I highly recommend upgrading your receiver to be honest. It's a lot better with a receiver that has banana (very important) ports.
You won't lose GSYNC on your primary monitor while doing this setup right?

Does anyone have problem with audio output delay? When I play audio it doesn't play audio right away I have to wait like 2-4 seconds for it to come on then the audio will play.
If you're using a receiver, I'd say it's normal unless the words aren't matching the lips. My receiver shuts down audio processing when there's no audio coming through. When I start playing a video, there is a second or two delay and then the audio starts coming out. @@gundam0039 Thanks for letting me know I'm glad I'm not the only one that has this issue I have Yamaha a3080 what's yours? Regarding the 5.1+ surround sound on streaming services it doesn't work for me too. I tried playing a movie (hacksaw ridge) I purchased from youtube and it doesn't play on surround speakers, only 2 fronts. I have dolby atmos for home theater option on instead of 5.1 or 7.1 on windows 10 just to let you know. And when having dolby atmos option on the delay of audio starting is 2 seconds more than having 7.1 option on. interesting.

Yep the surround sound speakers work now with Chromecast, watched with hacksaw ridge. Weird I didn't even know this was a problem.
