  • The original 2002 Ice Age is one of the best children's movies ever. This is my rather haphazard attempt at a movie review of it, hopefully it's not too shabby. Excuse the audio problems and general mess of it all. This was meant to come out a few days ago but the video took much longer to edit than I thought so it's here now anyway.
Hope you enjoy and please leave a like and subscribe.

The use of animal noises when Diego and Manny face each other for the first time really makes the scene engaging. If they had started talking there, it would have messed with the scene.

1:02:45 This trope is called Evil Cannot Comprehend Good. It's very common in animated films. Diego actually displays this trope quite a bit in the film. First, he's shocked that Nadia would jump off a waterfall to keep Roshan away from him (admittedly, few people would expect that), that Manny is willing to put aside his grudge against humanity to help Roshan, and that Manny was willing to save him, despite the danger involved. Much of his character development involves him recognizing the value of helping others and putting their needs ahead of his own.

The scene where Manny and Sid save the baby from his drowning mother became tougher to watch in 2020, after Naya Rivera, the actress who played Santana Lopez in Glee, died doing the exact same thing she did. Both drowned from exhaustion trying to save their kid.

I think the music in the sequels, while it could have used the cues of the first film, is still pretty good. I especially love the music from Ice Age 2, particularly the musical piece, titled Mammoths, by John Powell, which appears when the mammoths show up in the valley at the end of the film. It's played at a slower pace when Peaches is born in Ice Age 3.

You should talk about the music in Monsters Inc. (2001). It was composed by Randy Newman, the cousin of David Newman, who did the music for Ice Age (2002), and Thomas Newman, who did the music for Finding Nemo (2003).

Macrauchenia's design in Ice Age is actually better than the one in Walking with Beasts, cause they're given more bulk than their WWB counterparts. In reality, Macrauchenia was bulkier than what WWB portrays it as.

Something I recently considered about Manny's tears in his eyes when he sees Diego lying close to death (at the time) is that he probably doesn't just feel sad that Diego laid down his life to save him. He probably also regrets lashing out at Diego earlier, nearly killing him with his tusks right then and there, after Diego revealed his duplicity, as well as the fact that Diego had to sacrifice himself to earn Manny's forgiveness. That might be another reason why he told Diego that he didn't have to sacrifice himself.

As another lover of IA1 (and wishing to see it get more recognition) this is such a great video! And also basically the same length as IA1 itself since both are 1 hr 21 minutes!! Also, I came here because of Twitter lol and you linking it there. :) A few notes...
    - The payoff with Roshan and the goodbye to Manny and Sid and Diego at the end! I went to each Ice Age sequel hoping and hoping to get a payoff from that last encounter the herd had with him (Manny and Diego imo deserved to reunite with an older! Roshan the most and see that he remembers the two and their sacrifices for him and that he's been changed forever because of his animal godfathers of mammoth, sabre, and sloth) and each sequel was a disappointment to me becos the sequels were so _tonally off_ and didn't even _feel_ like a continuation of IA1 itself and because we never saw Roshan reunite with our IA1 herd, the story will always feel incomplete and not brought _full circle_ . ;;
    - I never ever got the impression that Manny was going to commit suicide there at the cliff when Sid runs into him, in fact, given that he's heading north and Manny's path at the river is deliberately close to the humans' settlement leads me to think he was trying to commit "suicide by hunter", hence his continued efforts to get rid of Sid since he doesn't want Sid dragged into it cos once humans run into him... it's likely they would kill him - as seen when Manny confronts Runar when giving back Roshan - and he doesn't want Sid caught in the fallout. His plan of course changes because of Soto's attack on the humans and finding Roshan at the river.
    - Interesting that you call Diego an "anti-hero" though I guess that's fitting though nowadays he's more seen as a Villain Protagonist, per that trope, and I do agree that his redemption arc is sooo good and I wish we could see it talked about more since Diego is such an amazing character, especially with his character development and growth over IA1 as he bonds with Manny and Roshan and Sid.
    - The lava rivers near Half Peak can be explained because the tie-in books/novelisations give away the fact that Half Peak is, or _was_ in fact, a volcano, and it's likely the lava underneath that volcano laid dormant there and the geysers you mentioned throughout the areas helped set it off as the herd journeyed on top of it. I also theorise that Soto _knew_ Half Peak's lava fields were about to blow and he sent Diego after Roshan in an attempt to kill him at those lava fields...
    - About Diego's death almost being permanent, it wasn't just because of "children crying" for why it was changed. Denis Leary, Diego's voice actor, also protested against it - and if you know _anything_ about the ending Ice Age almost had if Diego had died - and said it would make kids cry cos the ending where Diego dies is extremely dark and depressing so it made me happy to see you view it as "triumphant" that he survives. :')

Thanks for the information! I probably should've done some further research as I've never read any of the books plus I kinda glossed over the making ofs but really wanted just a take on the movie itself. Just my personal thoughts and opinions really without much in the way of outside influence but of course that's difficult. Yeah I was surprised at how long this video ended up being but pleased with the results and glad you liked it too!

@@AncientRealms1999 Yes, your video was so lovely and more so, it showed such an unabashed love for IA1 and I really loved seeing that, becos imo it's so hard to find videos on CZcams speaking glowingly of IA1 (let alone remembering it and honouring it) becos most videos about _Ice Age_ I see on CZcams are about the franchise as a whole and it seems like IA1 gets lost in the shuffle, just like its sequels overshadowed it. I really wish Ice Age's sequels *hadn't* overshadowed it becos it's so lovely and serious and well-written but then the sequels lost the plot (still never have really forgiven them for not bringing Roshan back ngl) and became the very "children's comedies" Blue Sky initially resisted making during IA1's production, instead turning IA1 into a dramedy and I think IA1 stands the test of time _because_ it's a dramedy, which makes it meaningful to any age that allows themselves to open up to it.
I actually have two tie-in books and I treasure them! :) I have the Classic Storybook and the Movie Novel and they're great. I really did love your take on IA1 though with your thorough analysis, because, like you, I think IA1 is beautiful too and I feel like you really illustrated that really well in your video. :)

@@DiegoRedeemedLover Thanks again! Ice Age is a wonderful film and story, I also wish more people remembered this first one as fondly cause the sequels, whilst some have good moments don't hold a candle to the first movie at all. It's in a different league. I could talk forever about that movie and regularly quote a lot of it with my friends who also really enjoy it.

@@AncientRealms1999 I wish the same so much!! In fact, I've been wishing that IA1 could have a resurgence becos imo it so deserves it! Also, yes, I agree, the sequels have some good moments but nothing in them holds a candle to the first movie at all. I mean, IA1 was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film Oscar! Sure, it didn't win, but that's so impressive, especially since it was Blue Sky's _first_ movie! I could talk forever about IA1 too and I hope to make my own video analyses (and some AMVs) for IA1 someday because Ice Age _deserves_ to be hyped up more in my opinion because it's such an amazing movie! :)

the only good movie in the franchise all of them just got worse and worse the first was good the second was decent the third was okay the fourth was meh and the fifth was trash i was seriously conviced that this was going to end up being a cgi version of the land before time and they we're gonna make like 14 of these when the fifth was out the plots just kept getting so ridiculous and silly and gimmicky and nonsensical so many annoying characters for whatever reason they felt the need to give one of the main characters a love interest every movie for some so they just kept on adding all of these shitty pointless characters the literal only occasions anyone ever talks about these movie's is when they talk about how much they want to kill the baby from the first one for some reason they started putting all of this shitty annoying music in the later movie's the only thing that got any better as the movies progressed rather then getting worse was the animation even in the fifth film where they even managed to ruin scrats brand of comedy which was the saving grace of the previous sequels and all of the trash villains
