  • The Ice Age movies were some of my favourites as a kid, and were among the most successful animated movies ever, peaking when the third movie became the second highest-grossing animated movie ever. However, a lot of people don't remember the series too fondly. In this video, I review every piece of Ice Age media, in order to see for myself how well the series holds up.

First movie: a simple, fun story with nostalgic vibes
    Second movie: a decent follow-up
Third movie: The best sequel and a great conclusion
Fourth movie: a product more than a film, at least we got the Sid Shuffle and the Ice Age Village game
    Fifth movie: Just Stop!
    Sixth movie: End my suffering
Scrat Tales: the best finale to this franchise

There’s some things interesting regarding Ice Age 2 that were cut from the movie. For starters, there was originally gonna be a teenage Sabertooth Tiger who would’ve likely been served as a sergeant son to Diego, implying that Diego’s arc in the 2nd movie being drastically different from his arc in the final version (Which honestly, would’ve been better than the one we got. Have Diego be a father figure to this other saber-toothed tiger as well as finding new responsibilities that would’ve been a nice middle ground between his redemption in Ice Age 1, and his midlife crisis in Ice Age 3. Plus it would’ve fit Ice Age 2’s more relationship driven storyline.). Another scrapped idea was that Scrat was going to join the herd at the end of the 2nd movie, and would’ve been a prominent figure in the main characters’ dynamic… meaning that final scene where Sid brought Scrat back to life was gonna happen before the herd found closure in their arcs at the end of the movie. (Personally though, I would’ve let Scrat joined the herd at the end of the 3rd movie. With him deciding to choose the herd over Scratte, and by doing so he not only helps them stop Rudy through wacky antics but also joins them as a way for Scrat to end his comedic subplot. But for him joining the herd in Ice Age 2… yeah, I feel like it brakes the perfect pacing that film had.)
Edit: Btw, Diego’s speech at the end of Ice Age 2 where he talks about how Sid’s the heart & soul of the group does fit into Sid’s arc in the movie… that is, if it was Sid’s arc. Throughout Ice Age 2, Sid’s been trying to prove to the other guys that he’s just as capable as Manny and Diego. And so he wanted to be treated as an equal to both Manny & Diego as 1. He practically provided them campfire, giving them food, and was the reason why they even deliver the baby in the 1st movie. And 2. They wouldn’t be friends to begin with if it weren’t for Sid. Which is why even though I prefer Ice Age 3 over it’s predecessor, I do think Diego’s speech about Sid works in Ice Age 2 than it does in the 3rd movie…as the 3rd film was about the characters dealing with a struggle of their existential crisises, compared to the 2nd movie’s more “relationship problems.”

I think for the 3rd movie they really learned from Shrek where you use real world troubles to ask and answer questions about the characters' futures. What if someone has a mid life crisis? What if they have kids? Etc.

I remember watching the second movie a lot and became my favorite of the franchise despite its flaws. I will that the third should have been the end of the franchise because it felt like it concluded most of the characters arcs.
Also a bit of a fun fact that Diego was supposed to die at the end of the first movie, but when the crew showed the scene to the test audience, the children were very upset because they really cared about the character and didn’t like that he died.

Just like you, I am incredibly nostalgic for the Ice Age movies. The main ones that I used to watch all of the time were the 3rd and 4th movies. I especially watched the 4th movie a lot because it was one of the few films I had on my old phone back in the day so whenever I was in a long car ride, I would usually watch it. In fact, I have a distinct memory of watching that movie in the cinema
Either way, the 4th one would probably still be my favourite even outside of nostalgia because Peter Dinklage killed it in my opinion. Oh, and the credits where we see all the voice actors gives me so much joy
The only thing I primarily remember about the 3rd movie is Simon Pegg who was fantastic. The rest was just kind of ok I feel. And I barely watched the 2nd and 5th film so I’ve got no opinions
As for the original, it’s the only one I’ve rewatched recently and honestly, I still thought it was really great. It was surprisingly funny, had a solid story and plenty of heart and strong emotional beats
Overall, the franchise is inoffensive for the most part. However, I do wish I wasn’t obsessed with them as a kid and instead checked out other animated films back in the day like the Studio Ghibli films or something

I definitely don't hate the fourth movie on a personal level, even if looking at it more critically I think it's kind of bad.

Tbh. I really like ice age 3. Mainly how they deal with the dinosaurs and how they survive. Sure it’s not amazingly good or best but it’s alright for the most part. I find the underground/not hollow earth to be good. The story is alright. Not the worst nor best. It’s alright. The jokes. Are ok. Didn’t find eddie and crash to be gods mistake. Cuz am insane. Manny is meh. Ellie is good. Diago is ok. And theres buck. He’s insane. Not insenely bad but the alright insane. The dinosaurs are actually great. Not best but great. I will not deny that it’s bad. It’s okay. Also let’s be honest here the music at the end is so good that you can’t deny that all dinosaurs. Fictional or not fictional. Will be dancing to the beat. Even my boi Godzilla will do it.

We all have to agree that the Ice Age franchise should have ended after the 3rd film. Or would still have a 4th film that would serve as a conclusion to the franchise, but instead of being about the separation of Pangea (the seperation of Pangea had already happened in the fictional universe of the Ice Age franchise in the 2002 short film Gone Nutty) and pirates (it doesn't make any sense for there to be pirates in a franchise that literally takes place during the ICE AGE!!!), it would be about the Herd reuniting with the same humans from the 1st film (among them, of course, would be Roshan, who would now be a adult or at least a teenager) and all together they would face an army of evil humans led by the human who hunted and killed Manny's 1st mate and calf during the past and would plan to start a hunt for mammals. But unfortunately FOX forced Blue Sky to make more films just to make more and more profits. There could have been at least a TV series called "Ice Age: Adventures With The Herd" that would have show the Herd's adventures and experiences across the glacial plains, meeting new friends and allies, facing new enemies and rivals, and showing and teaching more and more about the ice age itself (like the exotic prehistoric animals that existed here in Earth during that period of time). Furthormore, the main villains of this TV series would still be Captain Gutt and his herd, who would constantly antagonize the Herd (mainly Manny). However, they would not be pirates (like, real pirates) but would be a fictional profession from the franchise's fictional universe known as "glacier marauders" (which would be a profession just very similar to a pirate crew, but being real pirates), who would invade and attack thousands of glaciers and polar ice caps in search of lots of food (which would be their "bounty") and use the four of dead animals that would had killed as flags. Finally, the great series finale of this TV series would be exactly how I described above as the 4th film could have been. But what about you? Do you agree with me? And which of these two versions of the rest of the Ice Age franchise do you prefer? Making a 4th and final film with the story that I described above ou simply making a TV series to continue the franchise after the events of the 3rd film? Please tell me your honest opinion. Anyway, good video!

I do think bringing the baby back for one of the sequels was untapped potential, though it all depends on the execution. I thought Adventures of Buck Wild had a conceptually okay idea for a sequel plot, but we saw how the end product turned out.

I haven’t completely seen “Scrat Tales”, but from what I’ve seen of it it’s a great improvement and both it and the final animation of Scrat finally getting to eat his acorn is the perfect send-off to Blue Sky Studios.

I seriously think that by the time we reach Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, this is where Manny, Sid, and Diego's story comes to a close. The ladder three are known as Ice Age Gen 1. Peaches, Buck, Rudy, Momma Dinosaur, and her young (and by extension Scratte) should be known as Ice Age Gen 2. Instead of Continental Drift, the fourth film could've been the start of the next generation, appropriately titled Stone Age.
