    Took a tour a few years ago. Incredible facility. When I was there, they were getting ready to ship out 5 - 5mw generators to the navy, to go in an aircraft carrier. (Used to provide power to get the reactor started.)

    my father was project manager for Walsh. From the first day of construction of this plant, I was fortunate to work there and watch Cat use hundreds of local men build this awesome piece of property. I also have worked in vessels that use cat engines. Watching this clip really fortifies "God Blesses America". Peace Brothers.

    I love these How It's Done videos.
    Positives: mostly enjoyable, informative, good camera work.
    Negatives: why-why-why must video editors shift so quickly from one image to the next? Might viewers see something - ahem - top secret? Most unlikely. The music - bleeeugh!

    @transcendtient I think you're missunderstanding what I say, I did work many years as a heavy equipment tech. in USA. It was a hard work, many jobs were exported out of USA. I prefered work on Caterpillar equipment, excavators,compactors,motor graders,tractors and many others. I learned to fly @ Fullerton, I was one of those that could teach anyone wanting to learn, very expierenced in welding and more. I love USA,loved Norwalk,Bellflower,Long Beach,Sta Fe Springs,and many more cities.

    @64jorthom I could not agree more, unions aren't just an American problem but it is worse here because they have complete control of the democratic party. Walmart is only giving the American people what they want and they do it with out unions. One of the reasons Scarebus is so competative is because EADS unions aren't alowed to strike.

    • @carcomp101
      @carcomp101 Před 8 lety +3

      The heavy crane operators are trained to never lift a load over anyone. Also, everyone is trained to never walk under a load. The smaller cranes are set up so most loads cannot be lifted higher than the engine itself, which is normally sitting on the ground (3500 series). With the bigger 3600 series engines the cranes *can* lift higher, but the teams working on them are much smaller, and everyone is VERY careful and aware of what is going on. Its a team environment. Very safe. I worked there for about 2 years before a layoff in 2008.

    • @OggyXXXL
      @OggyXXXL Před 8 lety +2

      Mitch Thompson It is not only in cranes. On your head never dropped a wrench or
      scrap from a colleague?

    • @carcomp101
      @carcomp101 Před 8 lety +5

      The whole process is designed so that no one ever works above another person. Mostly we worked beside others, or if we were making a component, we worked on that at a station designed to build that specific part (like an intake manifold assembly, or a cylinder head), while someone else is installing ones that are already finished. See @1:40 The one place where heavy loads are overhead others is in 3500 paint / prep. I was crane operator for a time here and its probably one of the more dangerous jobs. See @3:25 As operator, you have to be aware of the load, as well as others who may be working near it. Its much more likely to have a crush injury from moving an engine horizontally vs having a part fall on you. There was one time I lifted a 70 ton generator set. It was about one foot off the ground. During movement, I bumped it into another generator set. The 1/2" thick steel 'brackets' just barely touched and it left a dent the size of a nickel. The whole load was travelling less than 5 inches per second. Also, if the crane isn't centered properly over the engine being lifted, the engine has a tendency to want to "slide" across the floor a bit unpredictably. When I'd notice that, I'd quickly drop (lower quickly) the load and recenter the crane.

    Compare the amount of profit those companies make, with the CEO's sallaries and than the workers pay-check. Can't blame unions for trying to get the workers a bigger cut. Companies, CEO's, stockholders want more profit, thats why they move to low-cost countries. Not just wages, but also tax, environmental and health regulations make them move...
