I don't like shopping online because I need to try clothes on, and colors aren't always what they look like online. There's so many factors that I like to see in person. I always enjoyed the experience of being at the mall too. I'm just one of those people who can't stand a screen in front of my face for every single function in life.
Same here I like going out to the store just to get away from home. I ordered a book online and it never came. You don't have that problem buying from a store.
It's really said to see many of these places closing. I enjoy online deals but there's nothing like going to a store, seeing something cool, then being able to have it right away.
That's 1 thing I like about physical shopping, but I notice I pull the trigger for online shopping more for some reason, maybe because I'm not moving through a million Items. Online I'm more focused on an item and have more time to make a decision.

So sorry to hear the Retailers are going into declining Sales. I hate to see People lose Jobs and the Stores and Malls go dead and fade out into Oblivion just because of Online Shopping. What would happen if the Internet went down, and was never to be able to get revived again? What would all these Shoppers do? Hope to see these Malls get to be repurposed instead of sitting there left to rot.
I don’t know how I missed you doing this. You saw it when it looked better. I used to live not that far from this mall in early 1990’s. The lore of that Carson’s and how they treated the employees there during their last day was a surprise I heard. A good video overall.
It is amazing to see a place where there was once life. It was jumping and thriving...now turned ghost town. It's certainly the sign of the times. It's even somewhat disturbing to see vacant buildings these days.
I remember spending so much time there when I was very young. There was an arcade on the lower level, and a pet store that my grandma (may she rest in peace) used to take me to. Also, I spent a lot of time at that MacDonald's with the woodwork on the front entrance and its memorably green booths.
I used to shop there because of the gap store. It is still one of my favorite store. Thanks for uploading. My mom loves this restaurant that sold the best gyros.

I am from Illinois and although I never visited the Mall I remember when it opened and how stores advertised that they were now open in the Lincoln Mall. You mentioned a lot of local familiar names such as the Randhurst Mall I worked a security assignment there in the late 70's when I was in College, Wiebolts and Carson Pirie Scott which as I understand no one bought the chain and is in the process of closing.
Everytime I watch these videos of empty malls I think about how they could be repurposed, turned into affordable housing, enabling new communities to be born. Turn the upper levels in apartments, keep the lower level for restaurants, medical, banking, gym, etc.

I forgot one thing and that is the middle class has been dying since 2008, people have lost jobs and cannot find a job that pays the wages that the job they had. People in dead end jobs has increased dramatically.

It'll be LESS than 5 years, before Sears goes out. I give them a year, maybe 2 years if they're very lucky and last past Christmas 2018. My guess is that they'll file for bankruptcy by sometime in the first half of 2018. Macy's, I'm not sure if they'll go out of business. But they are struggling, no doubt. My guess is that they'll survive, but be a much smaller company if they do survive. I just only hope if they go bankrupt by some bizarre chance, that some other company buys the rights to sell Frango mints. That's truly the ONLY reason I make rare purchases at Macy's, anymore! Yep, the Frango mints is the only lure Macy's(nee Marshall Field's) still has to me anymore. :)
I agree - Sears is almost certainly going to be gone by the end of 2018. IMO, JCPenney probably only has until 2020ish unless they make some major changes. Macy's I think will survive as a much smaller company, especially given how iconic they are in NYC.
Potential future dead mall for you is Lakeshore Mall in Sebring, Florida. It has a Sears AND a K-Mart AND a JC Penney as their anchors. They have an arcade, too.

It would be good to have a follow up video of this and other malls you've profiled, to see if anything's been done to them or if they're still there. Unlike a lot of the other dead malls, this one appears (I think) to still have an infrastructure that would make it not to hard to remodel or rebuild. But then again--is this mall still there?
update Carson remained opened for about 1 year after the mall it self closed in 2017 Carson's close roughly a year later in 2018 and the entire mall was demolished in 2019
I'm not surprised that Macy's is closing up all these stores. They opened up way too many stores in the first place. I'm still mad that they replaced Hecht's, that was a great department store. The problem with Macy's or least with their men's section is that they sell 3 types of clothes:1) Business clothes such as ties, slacks, suits, and dress shirts2) A Young Men's department which consists of hideously trendy clothes that no one over 25 would be caught dead wearing, and most people under 25 would think twice about wearing this stuff anyway. 3) Clothes for older men playing golf.I miss you Hecht's.
I think a lot of it is the fact that a lot of the stores closing are cheaper stores that haven't kept up with the times as well. The quality of clothes, at least for men, at Macy's is atrocious, compared to something like Nordstrom or other high end stores. You can just get better quality (cheap) clothes online. That, combined with the factors you mentioned, is killing these stores - maybe they deserve to die.
Think of this, you want a pair of jeans and you go to a mall get out of your car and wander around to find a pair in your size. Then you have to find a cashier to pay for them, you get back and go home. You may have spent a whole morning or afternoon just to get a pair of jeans. Today go online, order your size and your through in about five minutes and also the price is lower. And just think you have done this all without driving anywhere. This is not rocket science why malls are dying.
I am from Kankakee and this was "the mall" until we got our own in '89, which is itself on Life support. Loved Aladdins castle, Athens gyros. As a kid this place smelled like caramel corn and joy.

Contrary to popular belief, Amazon didn't kill off the malls, low real estate values did. Prior to the housing/construction boom of 1991 It was cheaper to lease space in a mall than own a stand alone brick and mortar store. Mall leasing organizations built 1000s of malls and opened stores throughout the 70s (back then the mall was considered the downfall of main street stores, much like Walmart is NOW considered their downfall), and corporations jumped on the on mall bandwagon and threw all their resources into mall anchor stores. Problem, after the booming 80s and the era of the mall, prices dropped, and the now unable to support themselves store lost their shirts in rent, utilities and such to mall conglomerations that flushed themselves and their anchors stores into oblivion. Stand alone brick and mortar stores, like Walmart & K-Mart enjoyed a boom of business as standbys like Target, Sears, JC Penny and such scrambled to switch gears. Target & Sears got out of the malls and back into their own stores, but Sears never got out of the mall pricing mentality and when they bought K-Mart in a last bid to be relevant, flushed both companies into the crapper by poor management. Montgomery Wards, Merchant's and similar catalog stores just went belly up. JC Penny, though it has survived has gone into sharp decline. Amazon is the bad guy, they just zoomed into the vacuum and realized that without catalogs, the new method of shopping will be electronically. The issue isn't undercutting, it's changing the model with the times. Those that can flourish, those that cannot die. It's business 101 and the soul of capitalism. You may not like it, but it has always been this way. The old general stores of the 1800s were destroyed by JC Penny and their damnable catalog. That gave birth to the specialty store (ie the mom and pop's), that littered main street America. The price of real estate forced those locations into lease-able areas (ie malls). K-Mart, Mor-Valu, and similar general stores all tried to bring that back and did so with limited success, Walmart started when Sam Walton tried to get that piece of territory back and did so in a big way (buying out many regional general merchandising stores in the process over the years). Amazon will probably never kill Walmart and someday if real estate prices go back through the roof, neither company will be able to maintain their warehouse shipping/distribution networks and someone else will step in and take over. It's the circle of life, folks.
i won't shop Amazon, but I do shop Sears Kmart Walmart etc online, just so I do not have to deal with the rude cashier's.. the last time I went into Kmart it's 8 miles away from house, the cashier had an attitude like she was working at some high end store lol she was so rude, the elderly lady in front of me in line was having trouble hearing the girl so I spoke to the lady, the cashier must've been no older than 22, says to me ''i can speak to the customer myself" the elderly lady walked out and I refused my purchase as well, the lady at customer service said "get over it" when another customer raised concern over the situation, I think there was 5 who left the line and store because of it.. I refused to go back and that was Thanksgiving 2015... I still have the receipt lol the customer service is not like it used to be before 2000... I used to work in marketing for stores like Kmart we trained the cashier's and employees back then treated them with respect they were happy so were the customers, now people are just full of hatred and anger... it's sad and these malls show it and remind us of when times were good
Piggybacking off of +ELEVATING WITH LENO, Northridge Mall in Milwaukee. According to a previous news broadcast it remains in actually decent condition. The Memorial Mall in Sheboygan is closing its doors and will be demolished soon to make room for a Meijer, and the mall in Manitowoc, WI (name escapes me for the moment) is abandoned as well.
I have seen videos that others have posted on the mall, the damage increases each time. This is the next Rolling Acres Mall... it will waist away while people vandalize it and steal copper from it until the city has to tear it down.

This mall was dying for years. Money mismanagement was its killer - they had already started a rebuild of this mall and surrounding stores when lawsuits were filed and everything went to shit. Doesn't help that Matteson is a bit of a dump, but this place thrived in the 80's and 90's - lots of great memories there.

This mall was demolished within a year of their visit, the Carson's anchor remained for a few years and is only now eating it.

You should check out The Shops at Ithaca Mall in Ithaca, NY. It's not dead in vacancies, but there's never any people there.
It is sad to see all these places getting tore up like they are. You hardly see a camera store in a mall anymore either. Even the busy malls.

I was by there a month ago. They just about demolished it. They were working on what was Weibolts then years later Sears.

Contrary to popular belief, Amazon didn't kill off the malls, low real estate values did. Prior to the housing/construction boom of 1991 It was cheaper to lease space in a mall than own a stand alone brick and mortar store. Mall leasing organizations built 1000s of malls and opened stores throughout the 70s (back then the mall was considered the downfall of main street stores, much like Walmart is NOW considered their downfall), and corporations jumped on the on mall bandwagon and threw all their resources into mall anchor stores. Problem, after the booming 80s and the era of the mall, prices dropped, and the now unable to support themselves store lost their shirts in rent, utilities and such to mall conglomerations that flushed themselves and their anchors stores into oblivion. Stand alone brick and mortar stores, like Walmart & K-Mart enjoyed a boom of business as standbys like Target, Sears, JC Penny and such scrambled to switch gears. Target & Sears got out of the malls and back into their own stores, but Sears never got out of the mall pricing mentality and when they bought K-Mart in a last bid to be relevant, flushed both companies into the crapper by poor management. Montgomery Wards, Merchant's and similar catalog stores just went belly up. JC Penny, though it has survived has gone into sharp decline.
Amazon is the bad guy, they just zoomed into the vacuum and realized that without catalogs, the new method of shopping will be electronically. The issue isn't undercutting, it's changing the model with the times. Those that can flourish, those that cannot die. It's business 101 and the soul of capitalism. You may not like it, but it has always been this way. The old general stores of the 1800s were destroyed by JC Penny and their damnable catalog. That gave birth to the specialty store (ie the mom and pop's), that littered main street America. The price of real estate forced those locations into lease-able areas (ie malls). K-Mart, Mor-Valu, and similar general stores all tried to bring that back and did so with limited success, Walmart started when Sam Walton tried to get that piece of territory back and did so in a big way (buying out many regional general merchandising stores in the process over the years). Amazon will probably never kill Walmart and someday if real estate prices go back through the roof, neither company will be able to maintain their warehouse shipping/distribution networks and someone else will step in and take over. It's the circle of life, folks.

i won't shop Amazon, but I do shop Sears Kmart Walmart etc online, just so I do not have to deal with the rude cashier's.. the last time I went into Kmart it's 8 miles away from house, the cashier had an attitude like she was working at some high end store lol she was so rude, the elderly lady in front of me in line was having trouble hearing the girl so I spoke to the lady, the cashier must've been no older than 22, says to me ''i can speak to the customer myself" the elderly lady walked out and I refused my purchase as well, the lady at customer service said "get over it" when another customer raised concern over the situation, I think there was 5 who left the line and store because of it.. I refused to go back and that was Thanksgiving 2015... I still have the receipt lol the customer service is not like it used to be before 2000... I used to work in marketing for stores like Kmart we trained the cashier's and employees back then treated them with respect they were happy so were the customers, now people are just full of hatred and anger... it's sad and these malls show it and remind us of when times were good

Piggybacking off of +ELEVATING WITH LENO, Northridge Mall in Milwaukee. According to a previous news broadcast it remains in actually decent condition. The Memorial Mall in Sheboygan is closing its doors and will be demolished soon to make room for a Meijer, and the mall in Manitowoc, WI (name escapes me for the moment) is abandoned as well.
The one in Manitowoc is gone; torn down in late-2015.
My sister shopped that mall all the time back in the day.
I have seen videos that others have posted on the mall, the damage increases each time. This is the next Rolling Acres Mall... it will waist away while people vandalize it and steal copper from it until the city has to tear it down.

*Matteson, sounds like he's saying Madison. But yeah, Lincoln Mall kinda did themselves in. Nothing really appealing as far as stores go. Why go there when you can take another 20-30 minutes to go to Orland Park?
Haven't been inside since it closed, what a mess, but not from vandalism, just neglect so far.

This mall was dying for years. Money mismanagement was its killer - they had already started a rebuild of this mall and surrounding stores when lawsuits were filed and everything went to shit. Doesn't help that Matteson is a bit of a dump, but this place thrived in the 80's and 90's - lots of great memories there.
Funny to see landmark mall show up again. FYI Landmark mall is closing at the end of January.

Lincoln Mall use to be a very nice mall once upon a time. The city has now begun demolition on it. Sad to see it go, but really needs to be torn down.
