      I definitely did enjoy his video, on Finger Lakes Mall for sure! Loved how the food court of that mall looked. And if I lived anywhere near there(live near Chicago btw), I certainly would do a trip to take some pics of that mall. Ah well,there are interesting malls in my neck of the woods, so no big deal I won't be able to make it there anytime soon.

    The barber shop located on the ground floor, is the original barbershop that was there before it became a mall in the 70's. That is the original section of the mall. My father used to get his hair cut there when I was little. It will be sad to see it go, such a CNY icon.

    Great video. This mall is in my hometown. To the immediate left of the old Hot Topic at 11:24 are double doors into an old 80's arcade, "Great Games". Behind the door are stairs leading down into the old arcade. I passed by there once when a janitor had the doors open and the old signage and 70's/80's era carpeting were still in place!
    The skate park was an old Media Play and way before Media Play, a Woolworth's.

      That is correct. You have brought back some memories of how malls used to be, especially the arcades! That Fun Junction is lame. You have to buy a ticket for around 3 or 4 dollars instead of putting in quarters like the old days.

  • @RickRudesMustache
    @RickRudesMustache Před 8 lety +4

    Never knew other people had such interest in old malls. I guess for alot of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's many of us have fond memories of those places. Makes me sad when I go back to my local mall now. It started to die out probably around the late 90's. It was a great place at one time. At it's peak they had 3 arcades a couple of movie theatres and a packed food court. Of course the arcades are all gone now and the food court mostly empty. JCPenny is the last big retail chain left after Sears and Dillard's closed down. It's mostly like other deserted malls now, with some flea market type shop a few local businesses and a few smaller chains left. For a place that use to get so crowded on weekends you'd have to squeeze past people it's rather ghostly now seeing just a few handful of people at at time wandering through now days.

    I was hoping you could do Great Northern Mall, Old Penn Can mall which is now Driver's Village but still resembles the core part of the mall, and in a way you could do Northern Lights which was enclosed long time ago but now open and only has a few stores left (it is outdoors but still some cool label scars like Media Play which just took down the sign several months ago and was closed around 2003 or 2004). You could do all three of those in one video or at least Great Northern and Penn Can in one video since they are small in comparison.

    Oh boy. I knew I would find Shoppingtown sooner or later, LOL. This mall is so damned dead, it's practically post-apocalyptic. Last weekend when I went there, I saw "A Quiet Place" at the movie theater. How ironic. There's literally nobody there except movie-goers. The salon downstairs was replaced with a convenience store. A year or so ago, my favorite snack stand Auntie Anne's closed down to my heartbreak. JcPenney's closed down in 2016 or 2017. The popcorn and frozen yogurt stand closed down a few years back. I was REALLY disappointed when the library shut down and moved further out, because that was pretty much the main reason I even went to the mall in the first place; it was really convenient. I want to go browse around in Sears for one last time, then I'm not even bothering to go there for the movies anymore. I moved to Syracuse in the early 2000s and the mall compared to now, was SO much better and more active. Now, I don't even think there's anything left in the food court. How sad.

  • @bloxyman22
    @bloxyman22 Před 8 lety +3

    I wonder why they dont just seal off most of the mall and concentrate the little that is left in one section, so that the remaining stores at least have a chance of making profits.. Would also lead to lower running costs since they dont need to keep electricity going throughout the entire mall and would also need less maintaince and security.

    Wilmorite Properties was actually a fairly good partner for the stores. They sold the entire property line up to Macerich several years ago. They walked away from their payments and left the mall high and dry.
    They did the same thing a couple of years later to the Great Northern Mall. That mall was taken over by Spinoso a local property company that is based in Syracuse, NY. Great Northern Mall has a lot of empty stores as well, but is actually holding it's own in a very hard marketplace. The elephant of Destiny (formerly Carousel Mall) of Syracuse took a huge dent out of our malls!! But the local's are slowly returning to the Great Northern Mall, and to a lesser extent Shopping Town.
    I would elaborate on Macerich properties....but will hold my tongue as I would rather not have legal issues.

    Hello........nice video but I think you are wrong about why malls are dying in the USA. Its got to do with the zero interest rate policies along with the government lying about the true unemployment figures. For example I live in Canada and its only malls in areas that have economic hardships that are doing bad like the Westmount mall that you made a video of in London Ontario. London Ontario had at least 5 large factories close in the last 7 years including caterpillar and also Kelloggs. You also mentioned another mall in St Thomas and it same thing as St Thomas had several factories also close like a 600 job factory from Magna international that made auto parts and a ford plant also closed. In both Canada and USA in areas where the economy is good you just don't see as many closures.

      I think it's a lot of factors, as to why certain malls are struggling. People who aren't in the upper 1% of income, have less disposable income vs. years ago. Not to forget the US in my opinion is definitely overretailed and that too many malls and shopping centers were built years ago, and the demolition and repurposing of all the overbuilt malls and shopping centers is only starting to catch up now. And of course, internet retailing has played a role to some extent, as well. I'm less sure about the retail situation in Canada(only been there like 3 times in my life), but it's probably a similar situation up there as well.
      I think malls and shopping centers will continue to thrive, but that fewer will exist in 10-20 years, vs. the peak number of malls and shopping centers we saw in the 1990s and 2000s. Which of course, was also before the rise of internet shopping.

    A skatepark in this mall? That's new, I've never seen another mall with that! Interesting feature for a mall to have, since they have to have entertainment and unusual things to attract people into them nowadays. What anchor store did that used to be, at 1:35 into this video? Great video, and I continue to love your dead mall series of videos!

    Used to go there in the 1980's...was always crowded. Remember doing a remote radio broadcast there in 1985, right across from where the Woolworth's was...(I guess where that Fun Station is?) This was before the Carousel Mall/Destiny USA was even built. It never struck me as "huge," more like rambling and poorly designed...which is primarily because it was expanded haphazardly over the course of decades. It was one of the first malls in the nation if it opened in 1953.

    • @themoviedealers
      @themoviedealers Před 6 lety

      Nope, sorry, the Woolworth's was where the skate park is. I distinctly remember it was two levels and had that escalator. I recall going downstairs where they had a bunch of remaindered LPs and cassettes for like 50 cents each...which at that time was like 10 year old stuff, so early to mid 1970s.

    • @themoviedealers
      @themoviedealers Před 6 lety

      Right near the ramp complex, across the way from the Woolworth's, was a Bob's Big Boy. A small storefront location. Maybe called Bob's Big Boy Junior?

    I just dont understand why you would buy a mall and see it in piss poor shape snd not keep up on the maintenance of it! They kept bandading the problems w/o regard to vendors or shoppers. Had they kept on top of things here and brought in stores that Destny doesn't have people would have kept coming! Should have had a woman running things at this mall would have been still in good shape!! Shame on you Moonbeam and mall mgmt, people loved this mall and you all just let it DIE !!!
