  • It is time to test the Shapton Glass Stones and receive a Tanaka Deba knife to sharpen. So they all came together and I made a video. :)
The stone used in this video are Shapton Glass 320 and 1000 grit.
For polishing I used a Okunomon Tomae Koppa natural whetstone.

For those interested in who I am you can find below a short presentation.
My name is Daniel, I am an electronic engineer who started from some time to work with wood. Wood was a passion of mine since my childhood when I grew with my uncle who was a woodworker.
When I was about 35 I bought a CNC machine and made several things with it.
Working with wood I needed some cutting tools so I had to buy hand planes and chisels. They needed to be sharpened so I have discovered whetstones and I have another passion now: sharpening. I like sharpening and I discover how relaxing is to sharpen a kitchen knife. I am not a specialist, I am a self though from what I read and from other people movies.
On my channel you can find movies with what I do in my workshop: sharpening, some woodworking, repairing things and whatever I have to do and I consider it might be interesting for you.
I am sure that you don’t like all my movies. There is no problem, it is normal. :) If you would like to tell me your opinions please be civilized. :) But I hope that you like them at list 99.99%. :)
Thank you for watching and as I already told you in the movie please support me with a like, comment, share, subscribe, etc. Any of them are important to me.

"You don't need to focus on the stone. You need to focus on the sharpening" - oh, so true! For that alone you deserve at least a like and subscribe (which I did right away!).

They may be thin but they stay flat for a long time and wear the slowest of any stone I’ve ever used, just something to keep in mind is all

Taidea have released glass stones that appear like Shapton glass, no reviews on youtube. It's under Proyan brand. Another chance to break new ground!
On the Aliexpress video, it seems to be softer than Shapton - slurry was a murky gray, indicating stone is breaking down, where on Shapton I've seen mostly metal swarf.

I tried to buy those stones a year ago but the price was almost as shapton so I said pas. I was approached by a seller and he told me that he can sell me the exact same stones with my own brand. I said first I want to buy some just to test them but he said he can;t sell me a few pieces. So I dropped it.

@@DanielWorkshop The price on Proyan glass is less than a third of Shapton shipped to Canada, so probably even less to Romania.

I will try again than. Maybe now I will get them at a better price. What is interesting is that they say they are splash and go.

@@DanielWorkshop Yes, the message is inconsistent. Even on Aliexpress, there is an image of the product that says don't soak, just splash water. But then there is a line in the description that says soak for 5 minutes. And in the demo video they do soak.
Since it is designed to look like the Shapton glass, I have a feeling at least it's intended to be marked as splash and go.

There are also some companies in Europe that they sell similar ones and they say splash and go in the description.
I sow also some sold under the brand Reetec that they look similar with the kuromaku series.

Nice video but I have a little complaint. This video suppose to be about test of shapton glass and you did only half the job ❤ so now you have to do one more video about the rest ❤️
Otherwise great video and info, great info about the 320 needed time and slurry to get working properly.
    Thanks

they are good stones. the 320 and 500 are good medium course. The 1k is much finer than "1k" shapton pro, which is more like 500. the 3000 is a great finer medium stone. Great for touch up or go straight from 500 or even 320 for easy 2 stone combo. This is very common professional combo, fir example 2 stones, 400 to 3000 for instance. The HC is also very good for it's uses. as you can see with "dr matt" the razor video he shows 16k HC glass is not suitable for straight razor, unlike say 12k ss. which is much more gentle. we.. this is what HC version is for, for instance. ofc the 30k version everyone knows is intended for razors. Anyhow. for basic stainless steels these are great stones. they are very good, modern stones. very even. slightly softer than shapton pro and also more friable. basically they are more similar to a chosera stone. thats what it is.

    • @DanielWorkshop
      @DanielWorkshop  Před 9 měsíci +1

Good stone but I prefer Shapton Professional for knives. For razors Chosera and finish on naturals. :)
