The first 35mm film camera I owned as a high school student in 1975 was the Olympus OM-1. I would shoot weddings and later college photo assignments. I had the 50mm f1.4, 100mm f2.8 (a great portrait lens) the 24mm f2.8 for landscapes, large groups and any creative photography and the 300mm f4.5 for sports like football, baseball etc. All my lenses were Olympus Zuiko brand and they were all TACK sharp! I probably put close to one thousand rolls of film through that camera before I sold it in 1984 and changed to Nikon and later the Canon system. I have in the last few years bought another OM-1 and some lenses and accessories to shoot film and re-explore that way of photography again. Great fun! I would recommend this camera to anyone starting out in photography and wanting to learn how to shoot film.

yes! my all time favorite camera! Glad it’s finally getting some recognition but i hope it stays under the radar of the AE-1 and Nikon F. The lens selection for the OM mount is amazing as i’m sure you’ll learn as well. Great first look!

Thanks for such a great review - so useful that you showed photos you'd taken as well. Great contrast between yourself and your friend who had used it as well.

I set out, and accomplished my goal of owning the three most popular small, all mechanical 35mm SLR’s. The Nikon FM, the Olympus OM-1, and the Pentax MX. while i do love all three, the Olympus is my favorite. I personally like the location of the shutter dial. It allows me to set that, as well as the aperture without ever taking my eye away from the viewfinder (once you get use to it). The camera just feels more solid than the Pentax, and the images come out sharper as compared to the Pentax lenses I have used. As for the Nikon, it is simply an awesome camera (all three are great cameras) as well. But the layout of the Olympus is why it’s my favorite. A big plus on the Pentax is it’s size, definitely the smallest.

I really like the music in your videos. I am a huge fan of most of Olympus' OM series. Check out the OM-2n which is the more refined, but electromagnetic shutter version of the OM-1/OM-1n. The merits of the OM-2/OM-2n is the advanced metering system that actually meters off the film which was pretty sophisticated for 1975 when that one was released. If you shoot Olympus regularly, you do get used to the shutter and aperture dial placement and eventually see the logic in it. As far as the lens quality, some refer to Olympus as "poor mans Leica" for a very good reason. Their 50mm f/1.8 lens is amazing (the 50 f/1.4 is a bit faster, but not necessarily sharper).

4:25 Actually, that rather largish ASA dial WAS necessary because of the camera's internal design. This dial is a hollow tube that covers a galvanometer that moves the exposure needle. Very clever, isn't it? Also, the placement of the shutter-speed control was a result of moving the shutter's governor to the bottom of the camera (to make the camera smaller, of course!) instead of the ordinary place which is to the left of the mirror box.

New to your channel but gained a sub. I can agree that out of all the film cameras I own the OM-1 is the most beautiful. The Nikon F2 wins in terms of industrial design, but the olympus, It's just such an elegantly "japanese" camera if that makes sense

Mate the colours in your photos are really nice. Dare I ask, are they adjusted at all during scanning or posting? Please say no. I have the most boring of Canon DSLRs and want my photos to look gorgeous too. But should I use Photoshop or buy a film camera?

Aziz Medetov people enjoy the experience of shooting on film, film has a really specific appearance grain and smoothed edges and really soft natural light make film stand out from newer digital cameras. I personally really love the appearance of film but if you find the process pointless I get it.
