How to Add Power Steering to an Electric Hummer - (I know you're curious)

- Its time to install Power Steering on the Hummer! HUGE Thanks to www.oshcut.com/ for helping me get my parts so fast. Power steering is important in any vehicle, but especially heavy duty vehicles. The heavier the truck the more assistance it needs for steering. We had power steering working on our Electric Hummer conversion previously, but it was loud. This new electric power steering motor will be MUCH quieter and MUCH more energy efficient. Our Hummer's name is 'Whisper' and now it will be quiet enough to live up to that name.

Not that you have mastered power steering, it's time to master power naps. They will certainly come in handy over the next few months/years.
Now that you **
its all hell have
Indeed!
Hijacking your comment to say:
Um Zack, I hope you see this. That electric assist motor is not waterproof. It's not even water resistant. Those are designed to be beneath the steering wheel inside the cab. The first time it rains, you drive through a puddle, or even try to ford through some moderately deep water, that electric assist motor is toast.
@@actschp1 its also a fixed gear type not planetary gear type so if that motor locks up no steering at all.
Cleaner, quieter, and more efficient. I love it!
Efficient at polluting with Cobalt mining, and other heavy metals that pollute like no other. Polluting with Diesel used to mine the cobalt (For the batteries). Pollution from the electricity to power it, Where over 60% of it is coming from fossil fuels including coal. Pollution from crude oil needed for tires, gear oil, coolants. Hardly cleaner. It's just as polluting, it just takes a different form and has a much longer tailpipe.
@@gadgetdeez7069 ima dump my powersteering fluid on the floor
Cool project, but I must warn you from personal experience of a major design fail: the input shaft of the steering gearbox was not designed for that much torque and will snap. After driving my old chevy 4x4 around for a week with inoperative power-steering (same gearbox), just muscling it at the steering wheel, that input shaft snapped right off. It is designed for power-assist downstream in the gearbox. And when it fails, you are suddenly going nowhere, probably at low-speed but maybe after hitting a pothole on the highway and causing a major accident.
Also, I agree with several others who've commented that the cool laser-cut bracket will also eventually fail from repetitive-stress at the bend. Aluminum is the wrong material for that bracket, and it should also have triangulating tabs welded behind the angled mounting surface.
how big is your truck size ? as i have the same consideration on my 60's charger but rack&pion mod with sticky dot wide tires at about 12"in and my 1980's K1500 steering system? and with the charger i am considering use the chevy dump truck c60 or dues and half twining the steering box's as 90* bevel box's for full lank T-bar's aka to hold up the back side of the car instead of the leaf-springs
I was wondering this exact thing. Thanks for pointing it out. Do you know if he modified the box since then?
So the power steering assist should be installed closer to the gearbox?
"Ignore the wiring, I will fix that later" is the equivalent of "scratches at a level 6 with deeper groves at a level 7" for this series.

Those bent aluminium tabs look a little underspecified for the torque of the steering assist motor. After many cycles you could get fatigue cracking. Probably best to strengthen that up 👍 Great series just an observation
Not under spec'd for the motor, but for sudden 800lb kicks during rock climbing after vibrating it on the highway for a couple years...
Agreed yup, definitely a weak point.
Agree it definitely needs bracing.
I was thinking the same thing, it should have been made in the thickness of the motor plates. and with more solid cuts. instead of all the fancy stuff :)
@@ch4.hayabusa I don't think forces from the wheels put stress on the motor brackets. They'll go right through to the steering wheel as feedback. The power (and thus torque on the bracket) is uni-directional from steering wheel to wheels only i think.
The steering assist mounting bracket was flexing a fair amount when you turned the wheel repeatedly back and forth. You can fix and add more rigidity by adding a matching size, or larger, mounting bracket on the driver side of the firewall. Great project that has been very impressive to watch unfold.
Congrats on Jerryrig Jr.! Enjoy your time away with the family.

I would also recommend as other have stated to remake the mounting plate from steel. Can be 304 SS like your other pieces, make the bends of that form as big as can fit the space, add wings that can be welded to the larger flat, could even then passivate the whole piece for extra corrosion resistance. The wall its mounted to may need more strength as well. Hope all goes well with baby!
Just binge watched this build. Great job on everything. I'm excited to see the completion.
Congratulations on junior zack..no tests on him plz 🙏

That’s awesome news! Congratulations to the both of you!! Top notch problem solving on the EHV steering and mount too👍👍
17:20 - You might already have plans to do this, but I would definitely significantly reinforce that mounting bracket as it flexes a worrying amount. Overtime the aluminum might work-harden and crack from all the flexing.
As I see its not screwd in yet, thats why its flexing
Same design, but in steel with welded in gussets on the folded part.
I agree, as a safety critical component this should be redesigned
Yep, even if it will be bolted all the way - I will rattle away whole metal section, because it’s not thick enough
Aluminum in that way certainly wasn't a very good ideia. Aluminum will not warn you when it is about to rip that bent party, it will stress fail... Just snap!
Probably it would happen when slow or even stopped, since it work harder in this situations, but don't bet! At least add some gussets around there. ASAP!
"Jointy bit" that's my new word to describe all things jointed.

Congrats to your newest addition to your family! I hope its a crazy smooth transition and can't wait to see how the Humvee looks when yall return 😄
17:20 That's a lot of stress on a single piece of metal, make sure to reinforce that assembly. It looks okay-ish for now. I know other bolts are not in place as of now but you can see the whole metal plate bending. Overtime this assembly might get weak and bad things happen
Yeah was thinking same thing, not sure aluminium is the best material for this part
@@BenMillen he could fix that by adding sidewalls...
@@g60force yeah was thinking the same though still feel like aluminium would be more likely to stress fracture over time, I could be wrong, just feel like a heavy duty vehicle should have heavy duty parts where it counts
I'm agree with you
I was thinking the same thing. If it fails he will only lose power steering for a 1/4 turn of the wheel and have a motor thumping around down there
Hey, Jerry I dont want you to stop making videos due to sudden death so:
Depending on the forces of the steering the aluminium plate will eventually fatigue and break. I would suggest using a thick steel plate and welding on the neccecary angle changer thingy. Because the bending zone is under alot of stress. I really like this series and cant wait for the next video. :)
yep, that was an incredibly bad idea.. you can see the whole thing flexing at 17:22.
Yeah, agreed. Seems like the steering would still work manually if that bracket sheared off though
Yup, firewall is quite not happy too... Is this electric power steering tolerate off-road usage ? When you hit something with those huge tires it multiplies forces and send back massive loads in the steering.
So agree I was just going through the comments hopping someone has mentioned it
Ita such a bad idea.
The plate its self should be ok its the 3 bolt part thats been folded to hold the pump 2 small section off already bent alloy definitely not good.
Totality agree
Congratulations on your family's new addition! I've really been enjoying the Humvee build. I share the vids with my son, who likes to work on vehicles.
Dude I just started watching your Hummer vids, amazing work! Can't wait for the next video!
Congratulations on "Cambry's project"! Jerry Jr. has some wickedly creative parents! can't wait for the rest of this series, best of luck!
when the vehicle vibrates, there will be a relative movement between the frame and cab. Reciprocate strain combined with assisted torque, pretty sure the aluminum mounting plate will fail pretty quick, be sure to add several stiffening ribs on the mounting plate and check periodically.
I don't think that an electric motor vibrates as strong as a combustion engine, considering how blissfully silent it was. But it doesn't hurt to be extra cautious also.
@@kluangh1tam i think op was referring to the vibration when the truck is on the road hitting bumps and stuff. + some off-road activities maybe?
@@kluangh1tam The Road interaction makes the vehicle vibrates and those very subtle vibrations are the main cause of fatigue in human and vehicle parts as well
Yeah, that plate is going to strand him with no steering on a trail someplace.
Yea that plate seemed a bit shabby.. he would need to redesign it moving forward.. could try adding some rubber bushings in the design.. I really don't know how but the small bracket holding the motor could be suspended on the 2 bushings perhaps..
It´s such a fantastic project. I watched the whole playlist now:) This way of creating the videos is aweseome.

7:23 A tip for the next time you are going to cut a hole that big or when you want to cut the hole maybe just a little bit larger then it already is. Use a piece of wood and cut your hole through it first. Mount the piece of wood in place and use it as a guide to cut your hole. Much easier and stabilizes your cut so it does not jump all over the place. Had to do this with my dead bolt opening that needed to be cut like 1/2 larger to support my smart lock.
and here I was messing with a dremel for 20 minutes trying to install a keypad deadbolt because of the same issue lol great advice.
