    would the quarter-disk example at 15:10 still be invalid if the edges were open at outer tips?
    in that case, is the bottom right vertex the only closed subset of the preimage, hence the only piece of the preimage that invalidates continuity?

      Exactly! Sound quality is too low... Can't hear anything without maximizing the volume
