    Spent a week on Sabbatical, here - it was amazing. Since my body was used to getting up at a certain time, I always made my way to the lobby very early to read, journal, and walk on the beach to pray. I was there in March and the whales were still breaching - although they seemed to be more active when we were on Maui. I rented a motorcycle for a day and explored Kona and further south.
    Hawaii is a very special place.

      This particular area of the Big Island where a couple of resorts are, Hapuna Beach Hotel and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, is got to be one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Hawaii. Each day I was there it was mostly empty and since sharing this review I have received many comments from locals who have fond memories of this location.

    Great video THANK YOU. Stayed in Dec on 9th floor, views are smoking way better. We also did that cabana you were in filming from. Worth a blowout $$$.. We went To Mauna Kea for Breakfast one morning. Checked it out as it was the 1st resort on the Big Island ever and wanted to look see. It did not have the upbeat vibe the Westin did. Of note ,I lived in Waikiki for almost a year, BEEN TO 5 ISLANDS AND STAYED ON THEM ALL 3 TO 7 NIGHTS EACH. Made CLOSE TO 40-50 TRIPS FROM THE West Coast over the years and since 2005 we only do the Big Island ,and that is 6 times. We have Not seen it all.

      Nice! I bet the view from the 9th floor was amazing. Definitely a different vibe at Mauna Kea, they are slotted for a multi million dollar renovation starting later this year I think, keep an ey out on your next trip over.

    Great camera work. In March of last year, the farthest North I stayed was the Fairmont Orchid. I took a day trip to the Mauna Kea and Westin Hapuna Beach. There is a coastal path separating the two sister resorts that is a 15 minute walk on a relatively safe rock/dirt path.
    Many guests walk between the resorts and there is a complementary evening shuttle service for guests who may wish to dine at the sister resort.
    The beaches at both resorts are beautiful, but parking may fill up pretty early at the Mauna Kea beach for non hotel visitors. Great beaches are tough to find on the Big Island and these are considered among the best beaches in all of Hawaii. They are both great resorts, but there are no other restaurants/shops within walking distance so you will need a car, or maybe you just want to relax and enjoy the beach.
    If you want to book an excursion like a circle Island tour, Mauna Kea, or Volcanoes Nat'l Park, virtually all of the major tour companies will pick you up and drop you off at either resort.
    Both resorts are pleasant without that over crowded feeling that you may get other resorts, and the price point is very competitive when compared to other resorts on the North Kohala Coast.
    I also stayed 5 nights at the Marriott Waikoloa, which is another great resort. There are many shops and restaurants within a short walking distance (King's shops and Queen's shops), and you are near the famous Lava Lava Beach Club, one of the best restaurants on the Big Island.
    I will have enough Marriott points in 2024 to stay 6-7 nights free at the Westin Hapuna, Mauna Kea or maybe the Marriott Waikoloa, cant go wrong with any of them.

      @tedcormier thanks for sharing your insight and tips! Im sure many will appreciate it. I did not walk the path but wish I did now, I bet it is beautiful. I did get a chance to shuttle over to Hapuna Beach Resort on a Golf Cart from the Mauna Kea. I loved both locations and yes, the beach here is one of the best in all of Hawaii. I do hope to visit the Fairmont Orchid and Marriott Waikoloa in 2023, I have heard many good things about both. Will definitely visit the Lava Lava Beach Club. Cheers.

      @@suitesandlobbies If you visit the Marriott Waikoloa, make sure to take the 10 minute walk to the Hilton to visit Dolphin Quest. It is around $1600/hour to swim with the Dolphins, but it is free to watch. Also, the Hilton is known for its spectacular pool complex that non guests can buy a day pass to, (around $60).
      The Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Lani are a 10 minute walk from each other on a nice coastal path, but are not related resorts. The Mauna Lani (as well as Marriott Waikoloa have ancient fish ponds where you you can see puffer fish, eels, barracuda, etc. Mauna Lani is pricey but beautiful.
      I am adventurous, and I walked all the way from the Marriott Waikoloa to the Hilton, then north on an ancient lava rock coastal path all the way to the Mauna Lani and then to the Fairmont. (I took an Uber back) . It took me about 2.5 hours with a beautiful black sand beach in the middle with washrooms/tennis courts, great snorkelling.... On one side you have spectacular views of the ocean and on the other side are $10-$15 million houses with infiniti pools and there are also golf courses that you walk past. The most photographed golf hole in the world is the 15th hole of the Mauna Lani south course....196 yard par 3 over an ocean inlet....spectacular.
      As you can tell I am very passionate about the Big Island, I wish I visited there sooner.

      Ted Cormier, your detailed review is so so helpful as we are planning our next March holidays in Hawaii. I wanted to ask you if Hapuna beach is good for swimming ( not big waves) ?

    • @suitesandlobbies
      @suitesandlobbies  Před rokem +3

      @@anitaklara7428 Hi Anita, I hope Ted chimes in on this but I will also venture to say that yes, Hapuna Beach is a great spot for swimming. One caveat, always check with the lifeguard before going into the water. Waikiki can be like a pond but I have also seen waves come crashing in, ALL beaches in Hawaii can vary quite a bit depending on weather conditions. What makes it more tricky is sometime the weather is miles off shore and not visible. The days I was there it was peaceful and calm. I hope you get to jump in and enjoy when you visit, nothing like some vitamin sea for the soul.

    I’ve been to the Big Island and Hapuna Beach many times. Always stayed at the Sheraton, now Outrigger, down in Keauhou Bay. Might have to stay there next time. That’s a beautiful property, even if it is a bit of a drive from Kona

    Great video you guys. Thanks for labeling stuff as you went along. That is a great help. Please tell me this. I have knee issues and going up and down stairs is a problem wirh me. Does this resort have facilities in place , ramps, golf carts etc) to help me get everywhere I might want to go? (ie: from room to restaurants, beach, pool etc..) Thanks so much h, Steve S.

    • @suitesandlobbies
      @suitesandlobbies  Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you! This resort is completely on a hillside so keep that in mind as I am sure you are already aware. There were elevators obviously all around and the area around the pool had smooth walk ways in addition to steps. I did not see any pathways large enough for golf carts but they may run them along the perimeter of the property, not sure on that. This would be a challenging property with knee or walking challenges.

      This is room 618, I would not recommend this room though. The furniture was scuffed and the cushions were stained on the outside furniture. Many have stayed in other rooms and report excellent conditions, I think I just got unlucky on this one. In the video description I have a link to the room review that also has pictures. Even thought this particular room was in bad condition I still recommend this resort as do many others. In fact many prefer the Hapuna over the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (my favorite in the area), everyone has their favorite. :)
